An electronic registration system facilitates authorized product returns. A retailer sales associate is prompted to enter individual product identification information such as an individual serial number. This individual product identification information is stored in a database, along with the date on which the product was sold and an appropriate UPC code, SKU number, or manufacturer code. A check digit algorithm may be used to verify the serial number prior to storage. A sales receipt may be imprinted with at least the date of the transaction and the serial number. When a product is returned, the retailer may cross-reference the serial number on the product with that on the receipt to verify the sales receipt. Otherwise, the database may be searched for sales information. A customer may also access a return authorization engine via the Internet to obtain return approval, an authorization number, return instructions, etc.

1. An electronic registration (ER) system comprising a processing system including at least one processor, the processing system being configured to: receive a unique product identifier for a product previously purchased from an e-tailer presented for possible return;access a product return database
1. An electronic registration (ER) system comprising a processing system including at least one processor, the processing system being configured to: receive a unique product identifier for a product previously purchased from an e-tailer presented for possible return;access a product return database storing product return information for a plurality of previously purchased products to determine, in connection with the unique product identifier, whether the product presented for possible return qualifies for return; andgenerate and transmit a return authorization number and return instructions if the product being returned qualifies for return to enable the product presented for return to be returned directly to a manufacturer thereof. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing system is further configured to provide general product information if the product does not qualify for return, and wherein the general product information comprises at least one of return policies, set-up information, repair information, warranty information, and service locations. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the e-tailer and manufacturer are separate entities. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the return instructions comprise at least one of return shipping instructions, how and from where to expect a refund, how and from where to expect an exchange, and an estimated processing time. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the product identifier is a product serial number. 6. The system of claim 1, further comprising an interface accessible by a return center, the interface being configured to receive messages from the return center when returned products are received by the return center from purchasers who have returned those products. 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the interface is configured to receive the messages from the return center and, in response to a received message from the return center, to generate a confirmation message for, and send the confirmation to, a party responsible for providing a refund or exchange to the respective purchaser. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the party is the e-tailer associated with the original purchase. 9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a tracking subsystem configured for access by purchasers in order to lookup status information concerning a return operation, the status information indicating whether: a return authorization (RA) number has been generated, a returned product has been received by the product's manufacturer, a request for refund is being processed, and a refund has been made. 10. A method of operating an electronic registration (ER) system comprising a processing system including at least one processor, the method comprising: receiving, over a network connection, a unique product identifier for a product previously purchased from an e-tailer by a consumer and presented for possible return;accessing a product return database storing product return information for a plurality of previously purchased products to determine, in connection with the unique product identifier, whether the product presented for possible return qualifies for return;generating a return authorization number and return instructions if the product being returned qualifies for return to enable the product presented for return to be returned directly to a manufacturer thereof; andtransmitting the return authorization number and return instructions to the consumer if the product being returned qualifies for return. 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising providing general product information to the consumer if the product does not qualify for return. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the general product information comprises at least one of return policies, set-up information, repair information, warranty information, and service locations. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the return instructions comprise at least one of return shipping instructions, how and from where to expect a refund, how and from where to expect an exchange, and an estimated processing time. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the product identifier is a product serial number. 15. The method of claim 10, further comprising receiving, via an interface accessible by a return center, a message from the return center that a returned product has been received. 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising: generating a confirmation message when the message is received; andsending the confirmation message to a party responsible for providing a refund or exchange to the consumer who purchased the product. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the party is the e-tailer associated with the product's original purchase. 18. The method of claim 10, further comprising providing status information concerning a return operation, in connection with a tracking subsystem, the status information indicating whether: a return authorization (RA) number has been generated, a returned product has been received by the product's manufacturer, a request for refund is being processed, and a refund has been made. 19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium tangibly storing a program comprising instructions that, when run, manage an electronic registration (ER) system by at least: receiving, over a network connection, a unique product identifier for a product previously purchased from an e-tailer by a consumer and presented for possible return;accessing a product return database storing product return information for a plurality of previously purchased products to determine, in connection with the unique product identifier, whether the product presented for possible return qualifies for return;generating a return authorization number and return instructions if the product being returned qualifies for return to enable the product presented for return to be returned directly to a manufacturer thereof; andtransmitting the return authorization number and return instructions to the consumer if the product being returned qualifies for return. 20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the program comprises further instructions for at least: receiving, via an interface accessible by a return center, a message from the return center that a returned product has been received;generating a confirmation message when the message is received; andsending the confirmation message to a party responsible for providing a refund or exchange to the consumer who purchased the product.
