A patient transfer sled having a support structure including at least one air cushion partially disposed within at least one pocket, and a fluid passageway extending through the support structure into the air cushion. Systems for patient transfer that may include a support surface, such as a table, a patient transfer sled having at least one air cushion, and a source of pressurized air. Methods for moving a patient relative to a support surface include positioning a patient on a patient transfer sled having at least one air cushion, and inflating the air cushion with air to form a sheet of flowing air between the patient transfer sled and the support surface. The methods may be used, for example, to move a patient on an air film over a surface within a system.

1. A patient transport system comprising: a table having an at least substantially planar upper surface;a bridge attached to the table, the bridge comprising an at least substantially planar surface that may be oriented laterally adjacent to and at least substantially coplanar with the at least substantially planar upper surface of the table;a patient transfer sled supported on the at least substantially planar upper surface of the table, the patient transfer sled comprising: a generally planar support structure having a first major surface for supporting a patient thereon, an opposing second major surface, and at least one additional surface defining at least one pocket extending into the generally planar support structure; andat least one air cushion at least partially disposed in the at least one pocket, the at least one air cushion comprising a flexible material, wherein a surface of the flexible material is disposed adjacent the at least one additional surface of the generally planar support structure, and wherein a portion of the flexible material has a plurality of holes extending therethrough; anda source of pressurized air coupled to the patient transfer sled and configured to supply air to the at least one air cushion. 2. The patient transport system of claim 1, further comprising at least one leg support affixed to the support structure at a base end of the support structure. 3. The patient transport system of claim 1, further comprising at least one guide connected to at least one side surface of the generally planar support structure, the at least one guide being movable between a first position and a second position, the at least one guide projecting beyond the second major surface of the support structure in the first position, the at least one guide being disposed above the second major surface of the support structure in the second position. 4. The patient transport system of claim 3, further comprising at least one handle extending from the at least one guide. 5. The patient transport system of claim 4, further comprising means for locking the at least one guide in at least one of the first position and the second position. 6. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the support structure comprises a material selected from the group consisting of carbon fiber, polyvinylchloride, an aromatic polyamide, polycarbonate, and polytetrafluoroethylene. 7. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the at least one pocket is located near a base end of the support structure. 8. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the at least one additional surface comprises two or more additional surfaces, at least one surface of the two or more additional surfaces defining at least one additional pocket extending into the generally planar support structure. 9. The patient transport system of claim 8, wherein at least one pocket of the two or more pockets has a surface area different from a surface area of another pocket of the two or more pockets. 10. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the flexible material of the at least one air cushion comprises a vinyl fabric. 11. The patient transfer system of claim 1, wherein the source of pressurized air comprises an air blower in communication with a variable speed control. 12. The patient transport system of claim 1, further comprising a pressure valve for regulating a pressure of air within the at least one air cushion. 13. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the table further comprises a stabilization mechanism. 14. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the bridge is attached to the table by a hinge and wherein the bridge is movable between a first position in which the at least substantially planar surface of the bridge is oriented vertically and a second position in which the at least substantially planar surface of the bridge is oriented horizontally. 15. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the at least one air cushion is configured to form an air bearing between the patient transfer sled and the at least substantially planar upper surface of the table. 16. The patient transport system of claim 1, wherein the patient transfer sled further comprises at least one air passageway extending through the support structure from an air portal to the at least one pocket and into the at least one air cushion, and wherein the source of pressurized air is configured to supply the air to the at least one air cushion through the at least one air passageway. 17. A patient transfer sled, comprising: a generally planar support structure having a first major surface for supporting a patient thereon, an opposing second major surface, and at least one additional surface defining at least one pocket extending into the generally planar support structure; andat least one air cushion at least partially disposed in the at least one pocket, the at least one air cushion comprising a flexible material, wherein a surface of the flexible material is disposed adjacent the at least one additional surface of the generally planar support structure, and wherein a portion of the flexible material has a plurality of holes extending therethrough. 18. The patient transfer sled of claim 17, further comprising at least one air passageway extending through the support structure from an air portal to the at least one pocket and into the at least one air cushion. 19. The patient transfer sled of claim 17, wherein the at least one air cushion comprises a distinct member from the generally planar support structure. 20. The patient transfer sled of claim 17, wherein the surface of the flexible material is in contact with the at least one additional surface of the generally planar support structure.
