A manifold gasket includes a carrier frame with a plurality of media-conveying openings corresponding to openings communicating between two parts to be clamped, such as an intake manifold and a cylinder head. Elastomeric sealing material is molded to the carrier frame about the openings to seal the openings when clamped. A compression limiting device is disposed on the carrier frame and is isolated from direct contact with the carrier frame by intervening elastomeric bonding material to limit compression of said elastomeric sealing material when the gasket is clamped between the head and block. The elastomeric bonding material renders the compression limiting device free-floating relative to the carrier frame.

A gasket assembly for an internal combustion engine comprising: a carrier frame having a plurality of intake openings, said carrier frame being generally planar with an upper generally planar surface and a lower generally planar surface;elastomeric sealing material bonded on said carrier frame in surrounding relation to each of said openings, said elastomeric sealing material positioned on both of said upper and lower generally planar surfaces and having portions thereof projecting outwardly transverse to said upper and lower generally planar surfaces;said elastomeric sealing material being elastically deformable when the gasket assembly is compressed to provide seals about said openings; anda compression limiting device having opposed compression limiting surfaces and being embedded in said elastomeric sealing material adjacent to one of said openings;said compression limiting device being a solid metal block-like structure and having an upper surface, a lower surface, and side surfaces;said elastomeric material embedding said compression limiting device at least on all of said side surfaces;said gasket assembly having a first thickness at said outwardly projecting portions of said sealing material, a second thickness at said generally planar carrier frame, and a third thickness between opposing surfaces of said compression limiting device;said third thickness being greater than said second thickness, and said first thickness being greater than both said second and third thicknesses;wherein over-compression of said elastomeric sealing material is precluded. 2. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said opening in which said compression limiting device is adjacent to has a polygonal shape with a plurality of edges, each with a defined length, and wherein said compression limiting device extends in length less than the length of said edge in which it is adjacent to. 3. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said compression limiting device is made of a metal material. 4. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said compression limiting device is made of a solid metal material. 5. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said compression limiting device is connected to said carrier frame only by said elastomeric sealing material. 6. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said carrier frame is made of a metal material. 7. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said carrier frame is made of a plastic material. 8. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elastomeric sealing material comprises rubber. 9. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said compression limiting device is free floating relative to said carrier frame as permitted by said elastomeric sealing material in which it is embedded. 10. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elastomeric sealing material comprises sealing beads. 11. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elastomeric sealing material also projects radially into said openings. 12. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said compression limiting device is circumferentially discontinuous relative to said opening where it is positioned adjacent thereto. 13. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein there are three intake openings in said carrier frame and elastomer sealing material is bonded circumferentially around each of said intake openings. 14. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 13 wherein said three openings are substantially in line and said compression limiting device is embedded in elastomeric sealing material adjacent a middle opening of said three intake openings. 15. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a pin member positioned on said compression limiting device. 16. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 15 wherein said pin member projects outwardly transverse to one of said opposed compression limiting surfaces on said compression limiting device. 17. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 further comprising an opening in said compression limiting device. 18. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said compression limiting device further comprises a solid polygonal volume with substantially straight side surfaces. 19. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the compression limiting device has a length which is less than a segment of the opening. 20. A gasket assembly for an internal combustion engine comprising: a carrier frame having a plurality of intake openings, said carrier frame being generally planar with an upper generally planar surface and a lower generally planar surface;elastomeric sealing material bonded on said carrier frame in surrounding relation to each of said openings, said elastomeric sealing material positioned on both of said upper and lower generally planar surfaces and having portions thereof projecting outwardly transverse to said upper and lower generally planar surfaces;said elastomeric sealing material being elastically deformable when the gasket assembly is compressed to provide seals about said openings; anda compression limiting device having opposed compression limiting surfaces and being embedded in said elastomeric sealing material adjacent to one of said openings;said compression limiting device being a solid metal block-like structure and having an upper surface, a lower surface, and side surfaces;said elastomeric material embedding said compression limiting device at least on all of said side surfaces;said compression limiting device is connected to said carrier frame only by said elastomeric sealing material;said gasket assembly having a first thickness at said outwardly projecting portions of said sealing material, a second thickness at said generally planar carrier frame, and a third thickness between opposing surfaces of said compression limiting device;said third thickness being greater than said second thickness, and said first thickness being greater than both said second and third thicknesses; andwherein over-compression of said elastomeric sealing material is precluded. 21. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said compression limiting device is made of a metal material. 22. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said compression limiting device is made of a solid metal material. 23. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said carrier frame is made of a metal material. 24. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said carrier frame is made of a plastic material. 25. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said elastomeric sealing material comprises rubber. 26. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said elastomeric sealing material comprises sealing beads. 27. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein there are three intake openings in said carrier frame and elastomer sealing material is bonded circumferentially around each of said intake openings. 28. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said three openings are substantially in line and said compression limiting device is embedded in elastomeric sealing material adjacent a middle opening of said three intake openings. 29. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 further comprising a pin member positioned on said compression limiting device. 30. The gasket assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said pin member projects outwardly transverse to one of said opposed compression limiting surfaces on said compression limiting device.
