An electrochemical cell, comprising: a cathode comprising an electroactive sulfur containing material;an anode comprising lithium;a separator between the anode and the cathode; anda non-aqueous electrolyte comprising about 30 wt % to about 90 wt % one or more non-aqueous solvent, a substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material in an amount of up to 1 wt %, about 0.1 wt % to about 10 wt % N—O additive, and one or more lithium salts including LiTFSI in an amount of up to 20 wt %, wherein the solubility of the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material in the electrolyte is less than 1%. 2. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the solubility of the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material in the non-aqueous electrolyte is less than 0.5 percent. 3. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the non aqueous electrolyte comprises about 50 wt % to about 85 wt % of the one or more non-aqueous solvents, about 0.5 wt % to about 7.5 wt % of the N—O additive, up to 1 wt % of the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material, and about 4 wt % to about 20 wt % of the LiTFSI. 4. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises a nitrogen group attached to a material selected from the group consisting of a cation, a monomer, an oligomer, and a polymer. 5. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises one or more monomers, oligomers and polymers selected from the group consisting of: polyethylene imine, polyphosphazene, polyvinylpyrolidone, polyacrylamide, polyaniline, polyelectrolytes, polyacrylamide, polyallylaminde, polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, polyimides, polybenzimidazole, and polyamides. 6. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises a polyelectrolyte. 7. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises a functional group selected from the group consisting of N—O and amine. 8. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises a functional group selected from the group consisting of N—O and amine, the functional group attached to a carbon chain comprising about 8 to about 25 carbon atoms. 9. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of polynitrostyrene, nitrocellulose, and octyl nitrate. 10. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the non-aqueous electrolyte further comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of a potassium salt, a magnesium salt, a calcium salt, a strontium salt, an aluminum salt, an aromatic hydrocarbon, and an ether. 11. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material initially forms part of one or more of the anode, the cathode, and the separator. 12. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode includes the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 13. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises a binder comprising the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 14. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises a polymer layer comprising the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 15. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises electroactive conductive polymer. 16. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the anode includes the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 17. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the anode comprises a multi-layered structure. 18. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the anode comprises a polymer layer comprising the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 19. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, wherein the separator includes the substantially insoluble nitrogen-containing material. 20. A battery comprising: the electrochemical cell of claim 1.
