A mobile station receives forward link signals and transmits reverse link signals for a communication session conducted via a wireless network. A controller maintains a reverse-active set that defines which sectors of the wireless network are used to receive the reverse link signals. When the mobile station transmits a request signal requesting the communication session, the controller may create the reverse-active set to include the sector that received the request signal with the highest signal strength. During the communication session, the signal strengths of the reverse link signals may be monitored in each of a plurality of sectors to obtain reverse-link signal strengths. The controller may maintain the reverse-active set based on the reverse-link signal strengths, adding sectors that report reverse-link signal strengths greater than an add threshold and dropping sectors that report reverse-link signal strengths less than a drop threshold.

The method of claim 1, wherein maintaining said reverse-active set further comprises: determining that a signal strength of a reverse link signal transmitted by said mobile station measured in an additional sector that is not in said reverse-active set has exceeded an add threshold; andadding said additional sector to said reverse-active set. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein adding said sector to said reverse-active set comprises: a base station controller (BSC) instructing a base transceiver station (BTS) associated with said additional sector to begin receiving reverse link signals from said mobile station. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein maintaining said reverse-active set further comprises: determining that a reverse-link signal strength measured in a particular sector in said reverse-active set has fallen below a drop threshold; anddropping said particular sector from said reverse-active set. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein dropping said sector from said reverse-active set comprises: a base station controller (BSC) instructing a base transceiver station (BTS) associated with said particular sector to stop receiving reverse link signals from said mobile station. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said forward-active set is maintained by said mobile station. 7.
