The retraction device may include a deployable, adjustable frame that supports the sheath and that, together with the sheath, retracts the incision. The retraction device may include an outer ring and an inner ring coupled to opposing ends of the sheath and further include means to place the sheath in tension between the inner and outer rings, thereby retracting the incision.

The retraction device of claim 1, the maintaining means including a ratchet mechanism positioned proximate at least one of the first and second hinges. 5. The retraction device of claim 4, the ratchet mechanism being positioned proximate each of the first and second hinges. 6. The retraction device of claim 1, the maintaining means including a valve structure mounted onto the retraction device external the body wall. 7. The retraction device of claim 1, the sheath being formed from an elastomeric material. 8. The retraction device of claim 1, the sheath being formed from a non-distensible material.
