Devices and methods are disclosed for achieving hemostasis in traumatized patients. Such haemostatic packing devices and methods are especially useful in the emergency, trauma surgery or military setting. The patient may have received trauma to abdominal viscera, the thoracic cavity or the periphery. The devices utilize fluid impermeable outer surfaces and distributed pressure to achieve tamponade and hemostasis, primarily by exertion of pressure. The devices come in a variety of configurations including sheet, rolled sheet, folded sheet and polygonal solids including extruded shapes. The devices are capable of serving as carriers for thrombogenic or anti-pathogenic agents. The devices are flexible, bendable, and conformable in their wet or dry state so that they exert distributed pressure on the wound. The hemostatic packing devices may be placed and removed by open surgery or laparoscopic access without generating excessive re-bleeding, and may further comprise antimicrobial or thrombogenic regions.

1. A method of achieving wound hemostasis comprising: providing at least one haemostatic packing device comprising a three-dimensional conformable mass with a fluid impermeable cover on at least a part of its exterior surface;packing a wound by placing the at least one haemostatic packing device into the wound and inflating said at least one haemostatic device, wherein the haemostatic packing device further comprises a water swellable hydrogel and a fluid permeable region configured to permit liquids to migrate into the water swellable hydrogel such that the water swellable hydrogel swells from a first, smaller size to a second larger size; andremoving said at least one haemostatic packing device once hemostasis is achieved. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the placement of said at least one haemostatic packing device is accomplished with an axially elongate placement device. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the conformable mass retains sufficient hardness to exert pressure of at least systemic arterial pressure against the wound. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein deflation or inflation of said at least one haemostatic packing device is accomplished through an axially elongate hollow introduction device. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the cover of the haemostatic packing device further comprises anti-microbial or thrombogenic agents. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the haemostatic packing device is packaged within a sterile barrier and sterilized prior to use. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the haemostatic packing device further comprises a port to permit liquids to migrate into the water swellable hydrogel. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising placing the haemostatic packing device within the wound with an axially elongate placement device, wherein the axially elongate placement device remains within the wound along with the haemostatic packing device for at least a portion of a time prior to removal of the haemostatic packing device. 9. A hemostatic wound packing system for packing a wound and achieving hemostasis comprising: at least one three-dimensional pack comprising a soft, pliable substrate at least partially covered with a fluid impermeable covering;wherein the substrate of the at least one three-dimensional pack comprises at least a core layer and a surround layer, the surround layer being a softer material than the core layer; andwherein when placed in the wound, the system utilizes the fluid impermeable covering and pressure to achieve hemostasis. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the core layer comprises a higher spring force than the surround layer. 11. The system of claim 9 wherein the core layer and the surround layer comprise foam. 12. The system of claim 9 wherein the core layer or the surround layer comprise foam. 13. The system of claim 9 wherein the core layer or the surround layer comprise a bladder fillable with a fluid, gel, or particulates. 14. The system of claim 9 further comprising an axially elongate placement device. 15. The system of claim 9 wherein the substrate of the at least one three dimensional pack comprises a water swellable hydrogel and a fluid permeable region configured to permit liquids to migrate into the water swellable hydrogel such that the water swellable hydrogel swells from a first, smaller size to a second larger size. 16. The system of claim 9 wherein the substrate comprises foam. 17. The system of claim 9 wherein the at least one three-dimensional pack further comprises a plurality of indentations on the fluid impermeable covering, said indentations adapted to carry haemostatic or thrombogenic agents. 18. The system of claim 9 wherein the at least one three-dimensional pack further comprises anti-pathogenic or haemostatic agents disposed on the fluid impermeable covering. 19. The system of claim 9 wherein the at least one three-dimensional pack is packaged within a sterile barrier and sterilized prior to use. 20. The system of claim 9 wherein the substrate retains sufficient hardness to exert at least systemic arterial pressure against the wound.
