A magnetic disk burnishing machine, comprising: a spindle operable to rotate a magnetic disk including at least one roller;a contact assembly including a contact pad and a pad backing material; anda length of a removal material positioned between the magnetic disk and the contact assembly, the removal material being operable to remove a first material from a magnetic disk surface, wherein the first material is located on an edge of the magnetic disk, wherein, in a first mode of operation, the contact assembly in contact with a cylinder piston which provides force, configured to forcibly apply the removal material against the edge of the magnetic disk, while the magnetic disk is rotating, to remove at least most of the first material from the edge and wherein, in a second mode of operation, the contact assembly is retracted relative to the edge of the magnetic disk and wherein the first material is on a read/write surface of the magnetic disk and wherein the at least one roller is configured to contact the removal material with the read/write surface of the magnetic disk to remove a portion of the first material in the first mode of operation. 2. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein the first material is a lubricant and wherein, before the first mode of operation, a thickness of the layer on the edge is at least about 25 Angstroms greater than a thickness of the layer on the at least one of an upper and lower surface and wherein, after the first mode of operation, the edge thickness of the layer varies no more than about 10 Angstroms. 3. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein, in the first mode of operation, at least most of the first material is removed from the edge of the magnetic disk. 4. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein, in the first operational mode, the removal material is moved in a direction substantially orthogonal to a read/write surface of the magnetic disk. 5. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein the contact assembly comprises a contact pad having a hardness of from about 20 to about 50 durometer. 6. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein the force exerted on the magnetic disk edge provides a pressure ranging from about 5 to about 100 psi. 7. The magnetic disk burnishing machine of claim 1, wherein the magnetic disk is rotating in the first operational mode at a rate of from about 500 to about 5,000 rpm. 8. A disk burnishing device, comprising: means for rotating a disk configured to include at least one rolling;means for contacting configured to include a contact assembly further comprising a contact pad and a pad backing material; andmeans for removing positioned between the disk and the means for contacting, the means for removing being operable to remove a first material on a read/write surface of the disk, from a disk surface, wherein the first material is located on an edge of the disk, wherein, in a first mode of operation, the means of contacting configured to include a cylinder piston configured to provide force, and forcibly applies the means for removing against the edge of the disk, while the disk is rotating, to remove at least most of the first material from the edge and wherein, in a second mode of operation, the means for contacting is retracted relative to the edge of the disk and wherein the first material is on a read/write surface of the disk and wherein the at least one means for rolling is configured, in the first mode of operation, to contact the means for removing with the read/write surface of the disk to remove a portion of the first material. 9. The disk burnishing device of claim 8, wherein, in the first mode of operation, at least most of the first material is removed from the edge of the disk. 10. The disk burnishing device of claim 8, wherein, in the first operational mode, the means for removing is moved in a direction substantially orthogonal to a read/write surface of the disk.
