A surgical stapling apparatus. Various embodiments include a handle assembly that has a movable handle that is movable through actuation strokes relative to a stationary handle housing. An actuation is shaft supported at least in part within the stationary handle housing and is movable in response to manipulation of the movable handle. Various embodiments further include a firing lock out assembly that is configured to selectively prevent longitudinal movement of the actuation shaft in a distal direction. A firing release trigger is supported on the movable handle for travel therewith and is configured to interface with the firing lockout assembly to selectively release the firing lockout assembly to permit the actuation shaft to move longitudinally in the distal direction upon manipulation of the movable handle.
1. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a handle housing;a movable handle portion operably coupled to said handle housing;an elongated shaft assembly protruding from said handle housing and having a distal end configured to be removably coupled to a disposable loading unit;an actuation shaft i
1. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a handle housing;a movable handle portion operably coupled to said handle housing;an elongated shaft assembly protruding from said handle housing and having a distal end configured to be removably coupled to a disposable loading unit;an actuation shaft interfacing with said movable handle portion such that actuation of said movable handle portion causes said actuation shaft to apply actuation motions to the disposable loading unit coupled to the distal end of the elongated shaft assembly; anda firing release trigger supported on said movable handle portion for travel therewith and interfacing with said actuation shaft such that said actuation shaft is longitudinally movable a first predetermined distance in a distal direction to apply a first one of said actuation motions to the disposable loading unit and prevented from further distal travel until said firing release trigger is activated. 2. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said movable handle portion and said firing release trigger can be simultaneously actuated by a single hand. 3. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 further comprising lock out means interfacing with said actuation shaft for preventing any longitudinal movement of said actuation shaft in the distal direction unless the disposable loading unit has been coupled to said distal end of said elongated shaft assembly. 4. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 further comprising retraction means interfacing with said actuation shaft for applying retraction motions thereto to cause said actuation shaft to move in a proximal direction. 5. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said elongated shaft assembly is rotatably supported relative to the handle housing such that said elongated shaft assembly may be rotated relative thereto about a longitudinal axis. 6. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said movable handle portion is configured to drivingly engage said actuation shaft as said movable handle portion is moved in a first motion relative to said handle housing. 7. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said movable handle portion interfaces with a movable locking gate configured to move between a first position wherein said locking gate retainingly engages said actuation shaft and a second position wherein said locking gate does not retainingly engage said actuation shaft. 8. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said movable handle portion comprises a grippable trigger. 9. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 8 wherein said firing release trigger comprises a depressible trigger movably mounted to said grippable trigger. 10. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein said elongated shaft assembly is configured to enable the disposable loading unit to be selectively articulated relative thereto. 11. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 wherein the disposable loading unit comprises: a tool assembly removably coupleable to said elongated shaft assembly;an anvil movably supported on said tool assembly and configured to receive some of said actuation motions from said actuation shaft; anda knife blade movably supported in said tool assembly and configured to receive some other of said actuation motions from said actuation shaft. 12. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 11 further comprising an articulation joint operably coupled to said tool assembly and said elongated shaft assembly to facilitate articulation of said disposable loading unit relative to said elongated shaft assembly. 13. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 12 wherein said articulation joint is configured to facilitate articulation of said disposable loading unit relative to said elongated shaft assembly upon application of an articulation motion to said disposable loading unit. 14. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 12 further comprising articulation means supported within said elongated shaft assembly for selectively applying articulation motions to said articulation joint. 15. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 12 wherein said articulation joint is configured to facilitate articulation of said disposable loading unit relative to a portion of said elongated shaft assembly about a single articulation axis. 16. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 12 wherein said articulation joint is configured to facilitate articulation of said disposable loading unit relative to said elongated shaft assembly in a plurality of different directions.
