A brake activation system and method are described. In one example, a bottom surface is configured to engage a floor pan of a towed vehicle near a brake pedal. An actuation arm extends away from the bottom surface and is configured to connect to the brake pedal to actuate a brake of the towed vehicle through the brake pedal, the actuation arm extends in a direction partially normal to the bottom surface. An arm drive system applies pressure to the actuation arm to drive the brake pedal to actuate the brake, the arm drive system being connected to the bottom surface to drive the actuation arm against the bottom surface in a direction partially normal to the bottom surface.

The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the brake controller is configured to rest between a driver's seat of the towed vehicle and the brake pedal. 3. The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the brake controller has a hack surface opposite the direction of extension of the actuation arm and wherein the back surface is configured to rest against an edge of the floor pan of the towed vehicle. 4. The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the bottom surface has a surface to grip a surface of the floor pan of the towed vehicle. 5. The brake controller of claim 4, wherein the bottom surface has a textured elastomeric cover for contact with the floor pan of the towed vehicle. 6. The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the arm drive system drives the actuation arm against the bottom surface in a direction partially parallel to the bottom surface. 7. The brake controller of claim 6, wherein the arm drive system drives the actuation arm against the bottom surface in a direction between 20 and 40 degrees from the plane of the bottom surface. 8. The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the actuation arm is configured to connect to the brake pedal through a brake pedal connector, the brake pedal connector having: a base having a guide;a movable grip attached to the base, the grip having a closed storage position proximate the base and an open position to connect to the brake pedal;a pin attached to the movable grip to engage and slide with respect to the guide such that in the dosed position the pin extends from the base opposite the movable grip to engage a retainer in the brake controller. 9. The brake controller of claim 8, wherein the movable grip is a clevis. 10. The brake controller of claim 8, wherein the movable grip is spring mounted to grip the brake pedal against the base and to drive the pin to extend through the guide of the base. 11. The brake controller of claim 8, wherein the retainer is a vertical cylindrical hole into which the pin extends to hold the connector. 12. The brake controller of claim 11, wherein the guide is a cylindrical hole. 13. The brake controller of claim 1, wherein the actuation arm has a movable connection point to the brake controller, the movable connection point being coupled to the bottom surface wherein the arm drive system is further to drive the actuation arm toward the brake pedal, moving the connection to the brake controller toward the brake pedal. 14. A method comprising: applying pressure to an actuation arm of a brake controller to actuate a brake of a towed vehicle through the brake pedal, the actuation arm being connected to and extending in a direction partially normal to and away from a bottom surface of the brake controller, the bottom surface configured to engage a floor pan of the towed vehicle near the brake pedal using an arm drive system, the pressure being applied against the bottom surface in a direction between 20 and 40 degrees from the plane of the bottom surface. 15. The method of claim 14, comprising repeating applying pressure until a back surface of the brake controller rests against an edge of the floor pan of the towed vehicle. 16. The method of claim 14, wherein the bottom surface has a textured elastomeric surface to grip a surface of the floor pan of the towed vehicle. 17. The method of claim 14, further comprising attaching the actuation arm to the brake pedal by attaching a spring-loaded clevis at one end of the actuation arm to the brake pedal. 18. An apparatus comprising: means for engaging a floor pan of a towed vehicle near a brake pedal;means extending away from the means for engaging for connecting to the brake pedal and for actuating a brake of the towed vehicle through the brake pedal, the means for connecting extending in a direction partially normal to the means for engaging; andmeans for driving the means for connecting to apply pressure to the means for connecting to drive the brake pedal to actuate the brake, the means for driving being connected to the means for engaging to drive the means for connecting against the means for engaging in a direction partially normal to the floor pan. 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the means for engaging comprises a gripping surface applied to the floor pan of the towed vehicle.
