A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for use with a vehicle according to one embodiment includes a housing adapted for permanent or detachable coupling to the vehicle, control circuitry coupled to the housing, and a battery for providing power to the control circuitry. A secondary power source is also present for recharging the battery. A memory stores information relating to at least one of the vehicle and an owner of the vehicle. The capability of recharging the battery greatly extends the active (self-powered) life of the tag. Systems for tracking ownership of objects, servicing of vehicles, and other applications, as well as methods are also presented.

1. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for use with a vehicle, comprising: a housing configured for coupling to a vehicle;control circuitry coupled to the housing;a battery for providing power to the control circuitry;a secondary power source for recharging the battery;a memory for storing information relating to at least one of the vehicle and an owner of the vehicle;wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause a display device coupled thereto to display a license plate number. 2. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the secondary power source generates electricity from light. 3. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the secondary power source generates electricity from thermal energy. 4. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the secondary power source generates electricity from kinetic energy. 5. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the control circuitry draws power from the secondary power source when the secondary power source is generating electricity. 6. A tag as recited in claim 5, wherein the control circuitry remains in an active state when drawing power from the secondary power source. 7. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the memory stores information selected from a group consisting of a vehicle identification number, a license plate number associated with the vehicle, a name of the owner of the vehicle, and a government-issued registration number associated with the vehicle. 8. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the memory stores a vehicle identification number, a license plate number associated with the vehicle, a name of the owner of the vehicle, and a government-issued registration number associated with the vehicle. 9. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the memory stores information relating to an insurance policy associated with the vehicle. 10. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the memory stores information relating to a service history of the vehicle. 11. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein access to portions of the information stored in the memory is selectively allowed or denied based on information received from an inquiring entity. 12. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the memory stores information relating to a toll payment account associated with the at least one of the vehicle and the owner. 13. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the tag is permanently coupled to the vehicle via physical integration into a portion of the vehicle. 14. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the display device coupled thereto to display registration information with the license plate information. 15. A tag as recited in claim 1, further comprising the display device, wherein the control circuitry is configured to receive a status of the registration information from a reader and update the registration information. 16. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, comprising: a plurality of RFID tags as recited in claim 1; andan RFID interrogator in communication with the RFID tags. 17. A tag as recited in claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to selectively provide and deny access to the information stored in the memory based on a type of inquiring entity. 18. A tag as recited in claim 17, wherein the information includes toll payment information and registration information, wherein the controller is configured to provide access to the toll payment information to a toll interrogator, wherein the controller is configured to provide access to the registration information to law enforcement. 19. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for use with a vehicle, comprising: a housing configured for detachable coupling to a vehicle;control circuitry coupled to the housing;at least one of a capacitor and a battery for providing power to the control circuitry;a power source capable of generating power from light for charging the capacitor and/or battery; anda memory for storing information relating to at least one of the vehicle or an owner of the vehicle, wherein the controller is configured to selectively provide and deny access to the information stored in the memory based on a type of inquiring entity. 20. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, comprising: a housing;control circuitry coupled to the housing;at least one of a capacitor and a battery for providing power to the control circuitry; anda memory for storing information relating to at least one of an object to which the housing is coupled and an owner of the object, wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause a display device coupled thereto to display vehicle registration information. 21. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, comprising: a housing configured for coupling to a vehicle;control circuitry coupled to the housing;at least one of a capacitor and a battery for providing power to the control circuitry;a power source capable of generating power from kinetic energy for charging the at least one of the capacitor and battery; anda memory for storing information about the vehicle, wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause a display device coupled thereto to display a license plate number and vehicle registration status. 22. A tag as recited in claim 21, wherein the tag is configured such that the information includes user programmable information.
