A surgical stapling apparatus includes a staple cartridge and an anvil member. The staple cartridge includes a plurality of surgical fasteners disposed in rows of retention slots. The staple cartridge may have an annular or linear configuration of retention slots. The tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge may be tapered or stepped. The anvil member has a tissue contacting surface that includes a number of pockets arranged for substantially aligning with the retention slots. In addition, the tissue contacting surface of the anvil member may complement the tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first annular array is arranged to apply an amount of pressure that has a first value and the second annular array is arranged to apply an amount of pressure that has a second value. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first and the second annular arrays are arranged to define a compression gradient such that tissue positioned near an anvil shaft of the anvil assembly is subjected to a first pressure and tissue positioned near an outer wall of the cartridge assembly is subjected to a second pressure that is different from the first pressure. 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the compression gradient has a greater pressure near the anvil shaft of the anvil assembly and a lower pressure near the outer wall of the cartridge assembly. 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first annular array is arranged with respect to the anvil surface of the anvil assembly such that a compression gradient is defined therebetween. 6. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein surgical fasteners in the first annular array have a first leg length and surgical fasteners in the second annular array have a second leg length that is different from the first leg length. 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the first leg length is less than the second leg length. 8. The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the first annular array is closer to the anvil shaft of the anvil assembly than the second annular array. 9. The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a handle assembly and a tubular body portion extending from the handle assembly, wherein the tubular body portion supports the cartridge assembly. 10. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the handle assembly includes at least one pivotable actuating handle member. 11. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the anvil assembly further includes an anvil shaft operatively coupling the anvil assembly with the handle assembly. 12. The apparatus according to claim 11, further including a reservoir of wound closure material. 13. The apparatus according to claim 12, further including a supply line fluidly coupling the reservoir with the anvil shaft. 14. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the anvil shaft defines at least one opening in fluid communication with the reservoir. 15. An apparatus for joining tubular tissue sections comprising: a cartridge assembly adapted for contacting tissue, the cartridge assembly defining a plurality of retention slots in first and second annular arrays, each retention slot configured to receive a surgical fastener therein, the cartridge assembly including a staple ejection assembly having a plurality of pushers, each pusher disposed within a respective retention slot;an anvil assembly having an anvil surface defining fastener forming recesses, the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly being relatively movable toward and away from each other, a first gap defined between the first annular array and the anvil surface, a second gap defined between the second annular array and the anvil surface, the first gap different from the second gap; anda plurality of surgical fasteners, each surgical fastener disposed in the respective retention slot, wherein at least some of the surgical fasteners have different leg lengths than other surgical fasteners. 16. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the first annular array is arranged to apply an amount of pressure that has a first value and the second annular array is arranged to apply an amount of pressure that has a second value. 17. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the first and the second annular arrays are arranged to define a compression gradient such that tissue positioned near an anvil shaft of the anvil assembly is subjected to a first pressure and tissue positioned near an outer wall of the cartridge assembly is subjected to a second pressure that is different from the first pressure. 18. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the first annular array is arranged with respect to the anvil surface of the anvil assembly such that a compression gradient is defined therebetween. 19. The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the compression gradient has a greater pressure near the anvil shaft of the anvil assembly and a lower pressure near the outer wall of the cartridge assembly. 20. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein surgical fasteners in the first annular array have a first leg length and surgical fasteners in the second annular array have a second leg length that is different from the first leg length. 21. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the first leg length is less than the second leg length. 22. The apparatus according to claim 21, wherein the first annular array is closer to the anvil shaft of the anvil assembly than the second annular array. 23. The apparatus according to claim 15, further including a handle assembly and a tubular body portion extending from the handle assembly, wherein the tubular body portion supports the cartridge assembly. 24. The apparatus according to claim 23, wherein the handle assembly includes at least one pivotable actuating handle member. 25.
