A surgical instrument for treating tissue, the instrument including a housing and a shaft with an articulating portion and an end effector. The surgical instrument including a first casing connected to and rotatable with the proximal end of said shaft with an internal frame housed within the first casing and a plurality of posts supported by the internal frame and connected on their distal ends to at least one drive wire, and connected on their proximal ends to a threaded shaft; and a second casing connected to the first casing and rotatable therewith, said second casing housing the threaded shafts. The surgical instrument includes a first electric motor driving a first gear interfacing with the threaded shafts such that a first pair of the plurality of threaded shafts rotate in the same direction and cause the articulating portion to articulate in a first plane.

An endoscopic surgical instrument for treating tissue, comprising: a housing having a shaft extending therefrom, the shaft including at least an articulating portion and an end effector;a first casing connected to and rotatable with a proximal end of the shaft;an internal frame housed within the first casing;a plurality of posts supported by the internal frame and connected on their distal ends to at least one drive wire;a second casing connected to the first casing and rotatable therewith;a first pair of threaded shafts housed within the second casing, each threaded shaft of the first pair of threaded shafts being connected to a respective proximal end of a post of the plurality of posts;a first electric motor driving a first gear, the first gear interfacing with the first pair of threaded shafts such that the first pair of threaded shafts rotate in the same direction as one another;a second electric motor driving a second gear, the second gear configured to cause the shaft of the housing and the first and second casings to rotate about a common axis;wherein driving the first gear in a first direction causes the articulating portion of the shaft to articulate in a first plane. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1, further comprising; a third gear;a third electric motor configured to drive the third gear; anda second pair of threaded shafts housed within the second casing, each threaded shaft of the second pair of threaded shafts being connected to a respective proximal end of a post of the plurality of posts, the third gear being configured to drive at least the second pair of threaded shafts in the same direction as one another, wherein driving the third gear in a first direction causes the articulation portion of the shaft to articulate in a second plane. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein the first and second pairs of threaded shafts each include one left-hand threaded shaft and one right-hand threaded shaft. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein the first and third gears interface with planetary gears to drive their respective first and second pairs of threaded shafts. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 4, wherein each threaded shaft of the first and second pairs of threaded shafts includes a spur gear driven by internal gear teeth of the planetary gears. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 2, further comprising a control system. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 6, wherein the control system includes at least one processor and one memory for storing a control algorithm. 8. The surgical instrument of claim 7, wherein the first, second, and third electric motors include an encoder configured to provide feedback to the control system of a mechanical motion of each respective electric motor. 9. The surgical instrument of claim 8, further comprising a user input configured to provide desired end effector movement data to the control system, wherein the control system is configured to interpret the end effector movement data and signal one or more of the first, second, or third electric motors in accordance with the end effector movement data. 10. The surgical instrument of claim 9, wherein the control algorithm stored on the memory is configured for controlling movement of the end effector in response to the end effector movement data. 11. The surgical instrument of claim 10, wherein the control algorithm and the control system synchronize movements of the first, second, and third electric motors and enable movement of the end effector and the articulating portion of the shaft in multiple planes simultaneously. 12. The surgical instrument of claim 9, wherein the user input is selected from the group consisting of a button, a toggle, a joystick, a pressure sensor, a switch, a trackball, a dial, an optical sensor, and any combination thereof. 13. The surgical instrument of claim 2, further comprising an electrosurgical energy source configured to provide electrosurgical energy to one or more seal plates operably connected to the end effector. 14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 wherein the end effector is movable from an open position to a closed position upon actuation of a movable handle, and application of the electrosurgical energy is prevented until the end effector has been moved to the closed position. 15. The surgical instrument of claim 13, wherein the end effector includes a knife for severing tissue following formation of a seal in the tissue by application of the electrosurgical energy.
