A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern using an actuator member, a resilient outlet member, and a movable member. The actuator member has a plurality of resilient finger projections. The resilient outlet member is arranged at least partly between the finger projections.
A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern using an actuator member, a resilient outlet member, and a movable member. The actuator member has a plurality of resilient finger projections. The resilient outlet member is arranged at least partly between the finger projections. The movable member is supported on the actuator member to form a dispensing path extending from the interior of the aerosol chamber to the exterior of the aerosol chamber through a valve assembly, the actuator member, and the outlet member. The movable member acts on the outlet member to deform the plurality of finger projections towards each other to alter an effective cross-sectional area of at least a portion of a dispensing path to control fluid flow along the dispensing path and thereby cause the sprayable material to be dispensed in the desired spray pattern.

1. A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern, comprising the steps of: providing an aerosol container defining an aerosol chamber adapted to contain sprayable material, where the aerosol container defines a container axis;mounting a valve assembly on the aerosol container
1. A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern, comprising the steps of: providing an aerosol container defining an aerosol chamber adapted to contain sprayable material, where the aerosol container defines a container axis;mounting a valve assembly on the aerosol container to form an aerosol assembly, where the valve assembly is normally in a closed configuration in which the sprayable material is substantially prevented from flowing out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly, andwhen the valve assembly is arranged in an open configuration, sprayable material is allowed to flow out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly;arranging the sprayable material and propellant material within the aerosol assembly;providing an actuator member defining an actuator passageway having an upper portion;supporting the actuator member on the valve assembly such that displacement of the actuator member towards the valve assembly along the container axis displaces the valve assembly from the closed configuration to the open configuration;providing a plurality of outlet members each defining an outlet passageway and a dispensing axis;supporting a selected one of the plurality of outlet members at least partly within the upper portion of the actuator passageway such that the dispensing axis of the selected outlet member is substantially aligned with the container axis; anddisplacing the actuator member along the container axis towards the valve assembly to place the valve assembly in the open configuration to allow the propellant to force the sprayable material out of the container assembly through the dispensing passageway of the selected outlet member. 2. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of arranging the actuator member such that the desired spray pattern is formed on a downward facing surface. 3. A method as recited in claim 2, in which the downward facing surface is a ceiling surface. 4. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of holding the aerosol assembly such that the container axis and the dispensing axis of the selected outlet member are substantially vertical when the valve assembly is in the open configuration. 5. A method as recited in claim 1, in which the outlet passageway of each of the outlet members defines a cross-sectional area and the cross-sectional area of each outlet passageway is different from the cross-sectional area of any other outlet passageway, the method further comprising the steps of: identifying one of the plurality of outlet members as the selected outlet member; andsupporting the selected outlet member on the actuator member such that the desired spray pattern is at least partly determined by the cross-sectional area of outlet passageway of the selected outlet member. 6. A method as recited in claim 5, in which the step of identifying the selected outlet member comprises the step of determining which cross-sectional area of the plurality of outlet member will result in a desired spray pattern that substantially matches a pre-existing texture pattern on the surface. 7. A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern, comprising the steps of: providing an aerosol container defining an aerosol chamber adapted to contain sprayable material, where the aerosol container defines a container axis;mounting a valve assembly on the aerosol container to form an aerosol assembly, where the valve assembly is normally in a closed configuration in which the sprayable material is substantially prevented from flowing out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly, andwhen the valve assembly is arranged in an open configuration, the sprayable material is allowed to flow out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly;arranging the sprayable material and propellant material within the aerosol assembly;providing an actuator member defining an actuator passageway having an upper portion;supporting the actuator member on the valve assembly such that displacement of the actuator member towards the valve assembly along the container axis displaces the valve assembly from the closed configuration to the open configuration;providing a movable member;supporting the movable member on the actuator member;providing an outlet member defining an outlet passageway and a dispensing axis;supporting the outlet member at least partly within the upper portion of the actuator passageway such that the dispensing axis of the outlet member is substantially aligned with the container axis;arranging the movable member such that movement of the movable member relative to the actuator member deforms the outlet member to alter a cross-sectional area of the outlet passageway of the outlet member; anddisplacing the actuator member along the container axis towards the valve assembly to place the valve assembly in the open configuration to allow the propellant to force the sprayable material out of the container assembly along the dispensing axis. 8. A method as recited in claim 7, further comprising the step of arranging the actuator member such that the desired spray pattern is formed on a downward facing surface. 9. A method as recited in claim 8, in which the downward facing surface is a ceiling surface. 10. A method as recited in claim 7, further comprising the step of holding the aerosol assembly such that the container axis is substantially vertical when the valve assembly is in the open configuration. 11. A method as recited in claim 7, in which the step of moving the movable member comprises the step of determining that the cross-sectional area of the deformed outlet member will result in a desired spray pattern that substantially matches a pre-existing texture pattern on the surface. 12. A method as recited in claim 7, further comprising the steps of: forming at least one deformable finger on the actuator member, where the actuator member supports the outlet member such that the outlet member is adjacent to the at least one deformable finger;supporting the movable member on the actuator member such that movement of the movable member relative to the actuator member deforms the at least one finger such that the at least one finger deforms the outlet member to alter a cross-sectional area of the outlet passageway of the outlet member. 13. An aerosol dispensing system for dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern, comprising: an aerosol assembly comprising an aerosol container defining an aerosol chamber adapted to contain the sprayable material and a propellant material, where the aerosol container defines a container axis;a valve assembly mounted on the aerosol container, where the valve assembly is normally in a closed configuration in which the sprayable material is substantially prevented from flowing out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly, when the valve assembly is arranged in an open configuration, the sprayable material is allowed to flow out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly, andan actuator member defining an actuator passageway having an upper portion, anda plurality of outlet members each defining an outlet passageway and a dispensing axis; wherebythe actuator member is supported on the valve assembly such that displacement of the actuator member towards the valve assembly along the container axis displaces the valve assembly from the closed configuration to the open configuration;a selected one of the plurality of outlet members is supported at least partly within the upper portion of the actuator passageway such that the dispensing axis of the selected outlet member is substantially aligned with the container axis; anddisplacement of the actuator member along the container axis towards the valve assembly places the valve assembly in the open configuration to allow the propellant to force the sprayable material out of the container assembly through the dispensing passageway of the selected outlet member. 14. A system as recited in claim 13, further comprising the step of arranging the actuator member such that the desired spray pattern is formed on a downward facing surface. 15. A system as recited in claim 14, in which the downward facing surface is a ceiling surface.
