An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

1. A method, comprising; positioning at least a portion of a glucose sensor in vivo;maintaining the in vivo position for a predetermined time period;during the predetermined time period that the portion of the glucose sensor is positioned in vivo not calibrating the glucose sensor by a user;displaying, on a display unit, information related to signals generated by the glucose sensor after in vivo positioning of the glucose sensor, wherein the information displayed on the display unit is associated with glucose level in interstitial fluid monitored with the glucose sensor; anddisabling the display unit and entering a sleep mode when an input device operatively coupled to the display unit is not activated for a predetermined period of time. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the glucose sensor is factory calibrated. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the factory calibrated glucose sensor is coupled to an on-body sensor control unit and wherein the on-body sensor control unit is in communication with the display unit. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising generating a factory-determined calibration measurement when the glucose sensor is calibrated during manufacturing. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising storing the factory-determined calibration measurement in a calibration data storage unit in the on-body sensor control unit. 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising storing the factory-determined calibration measurement in the display unit. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein positioning the at least the portion of the glucose sensor in vivo includes configuring an introducer to position the at least the portion of the glucose sensor through a skin surface at a predetermined angle relative to the skin surface. 8. The method of claim 1, further including providing a data communication component to communicate one or more signals from the glucose sensor to the display unit. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the one or more signals are associated with the glucose level. 10. The method of claim 8, further including providing a data processor to process the one or more signals received from the glucose sensor. 11. The method of claim 10, further including wirelessly receiving data at the display unit from the data communication component. 12. The method of claim 10, wherein outputting the information includes outputting one or more indications associated with the monitored glucose level based on the signals generated by the glucose sensor. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein outputting the one or more indications includes displaying the one or more indications visually, audibly, vibratorily, or any combinations thereof. 14. The method of claim 10, further including providing a drug administration system in communication with the data processor. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the drug administration system is an internal or external infusion pump, a syringe injector, a transdermal delivery system, or an inhalation system. 16. The method of claim 1, further including receiving signals associated with the monitored glucose level from the glucose sensor during the sleep mode. 17. The method of claim 16, further including disabling output of the information associated with the monitored glucose level on the display unit.
