An optical element for a light based touch surface comprising a plurality of contiguous segments arranged along an edge of a touch surface, each segment comprising a series of two or more pairs of adjacent alternating facets, denoted (F1, FF1) . . . , (Fn, FFn), each facet F and FF being a reflective or a refractive lens facet, and wherein either: the first facet, F, in each pair is oriented so as to collimate light emitted from a first light emitter component, denoted C, associated with that segment and the second facet, FF, in each pair is oriented so as to collimate light emitted from a second light emitter component, denoted CC and different than emitter C, associated with that segment; orthe first facet, F, in each pair is oriented so as to direct collimated light to a first light receiver component, denoted C, associated with that segment, and the second facet, FF, in each pair is oriented so as to direct collimated light to a second light receiver component, denoted CC and different than receiver C, associated with that segment. 2. The optical element of claim 1, wherein the light components C and CC associated with each segment are light emitters, and wherein, for each of said plurality of segments, light emitted from light emitter component C associated with that segment is directed by that segment so as to generate a first local spatial light intensity distribution of collimated light across an area of the touch surface, and light emitted from light emitter component CC associated with that segment is directed by that segment to generate a second local spatial light intensity distribution of collimated light across the area of the touch surface, and wherein the first and second local spatial light intensity distributions are different distributions. 3. The optical element of claim 2 wherein, for each of said plurality of segments, the sizes of its facets F1, . . . Fm, decrease as a function of distance of the facet from light emitter component C of that segment, where m is a number greater than 1 and less than n, and the sizes of the remaining facets Fm+1, . . . Fn, increase as a function of distance of the facet from C, such that the first local spatial light intensity distribution is substantially linear as a function of spatial position. 4. A modular component for a light based touch surface assembly in accordance with claim 1, comprising: one of said plurality of segments of the optical element of claim 1 and the light component C associated therewith in a single unit; andtwo oppositely contoured outer edges, to facilitate inter-fitting the modular component with a similarly contoured neighboring modular component, by positioning one of the contoured outer edges of the modular component alongside the oppositely contoured outer edge of the neighboring modular component. 5. An optical touch detection system in accordance with claim 1, comprising: a housing in which the touch surface is mounted;a set of first optical elements, each first optical element comprising an optical element in accordance with claim 1 positioned along one edge of the touch surface;the light emitter components associated with the segments of each first optical element, mounted in said housing;a set of second optical elements, each second optical element comprising an optical element in accordance with claim 1 positioned along an edge of the touch surface opposite the one edge;the light receiver components associated with each second optical element, mounted in said housing; anda calculating unit, mounted in said housing and connected to said light receiver components, for determining a location of a pointer touching the touch surface, based on amounts of light emitted from said light emitter components that is blocked by the pointer, as determined by outputs of said light receiver components. 6. The optical touch detection system of claim 5 wherein, for each segment of each first optical element, the collimated light directed by the first facets, F, at least partially overlaps with the collimated light directed by the second facets, FF, and wherein said calculating unit determines the location of the pointer touching the touch surface based on outputs of at least three light receiver components that receive light emitted by three neighboring light emitter components. 7. The optical touch detection system of claim 5, wherein the segments of said first optical elements do not all have the same length, and the segments of said second optical elements do not all have the same length. 8. The optical touch detection system of claim 5, further comprising a set of third optical elements, each third optical element comprising an optical element in accordance with claim 1, arranged along an edge of the touch surface adjacent to the one edge, wherein a common light component is associated with one of the segments of one of said first optical elements and with one of the segments of one of said third optical elements. 9. An optical element for a light based touch surface, comprising a plurality of contiguous segments arranged along an edge of a touch surface, each segment comprising a series of two or more pairs of adjacent alternating facets, denoted (F1, FF1), . . . , (Fn, FFn), each facet F and FF being a reflective or a refractive lens facet, and wherein the first facet, F, in each pair is oriented so as to collimate light emitted from a light emitter, denoted E, associated with that segment, and the second facet, FF, in each pair is oriented so as to direct collimated light onto a light receiver, denoted R, associated with that segment. 10. The optical element of claim 9 wherein, for each of said plurality of segments, light emitted from light emitter E associated with that segment is directed by that segment to generate a local spatial light intensity distribution of collimated light beams across an area of the touch surface, wherein the sizes of its facets F1, . . . , Fm decrease as a function of distance of the facet from the light emitter E of that segment, where m is a number greater than 1 and less than n, and the sizes of the remaining facets Fm+1, . . . , Fn, increase as a function of distance of the facet from E, such that the local spatial light intensity distribution is substantially linear as a function of spatial position. 11. A modular component for a light based touch surface assembly in accordance with claim 9, comprising: one of said plurality of segments of the optical element of claim 9 and either the light emitter E or the light receiver R associated therewith in a single unit; andtwo oppositely contoured outer edges, to facilitate inter-fitting the modular component with a similarly contoured neighboring modular component, by positioning one of the contoured outer edges of the modular component alongside the oppositely contoured outer edge of the neighboring modular component. 12. An optical touch detection system, in accordance with claim 9, comprising: a housing in which the touch surface is mounted;a frame of optical elements, each comprising an optical element in accordance with claim 9, surrounding said surface;the light emitters E and light receivers R associated with the segments in each optical element of said frame, mounted in said housing; anda calculating unit mounted in said housing and connected to said light receivers to determine a location of an object on the touch surface based on amounts of light emitted from said emitters that is blocked by the object, as determined from outputs of said light receivers. 13. The optical touch detection system of claim 12, further comprising a frame of lenses inside said frame of optical elements, each lens comprising a pattern of recessed cavities formed by a repetitive pattern of three substantially planar facets, for refracting collimated light emitted by said emitters in three directions and for directing collimated beams from three directions onto said receivers. 14. The optical touch detection system of claim 13, wherein said calculating unit determines locations of at least two objects that are on the touch surface simultaneously. 15. The optical touch detection system of claim 13, wherein said calculating unit determines locations of at least three non-aligned objects that are on the touch surface simultaneously. 16. The optical touch detection system of claim 13, wherein said calculating unit determines locations of at least four non-aligned objects that are on the touch surface simultaneously. 17. The optical touch detection system of claim 13, wherein said calculating unit determines a location of a stylus on the touch surface, the stylus being held by a user, when the user's palm blocks some of the light emitted from said emitters from reaching the stylus.
