A method and system for modifying ventilator operation based on determining the orientation of a patient associated with the ventilator is disclosed. A patient orientation monitoring device, which may be attached to the patient, generates patient orientation data to facilitate in modifying the ventilator operation. Modifying the ventilator operation includes instructing the ventilator to increase the amount of fresh gas to the patient.

1. A method for modifying ventilator operation based on patient orientation, said method comprising: monitoring patient orientation of a patient, the patient orientation comprising on the patient's back, side, and stomach, using at least one of an accelerometer and an RFID adapted to be attached to said patient, wherein said patient is associated with a ventilator;identifying and electronically accessing a patient record of said patient associated with the ventilator; andmodifying operation of said ventilator based at least in part on said patient orientation and patient specific information about said identified patient record, said patient specific information comprising at least one of age, sex, height, and weight, said modifying operation of said ventilator comprising increasing an amount of gas delivered from said ventilator to said patient. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said monitoring patient orientation further comprises: capturing images of said patient using a camera. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said monitoring patient orientation further comprises: monitoring patient orientation with a plurality of accelerometers attached to said patient. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said monitoring patient orientation further comprises: monitoring patient orientation with a plurality of accelerometers attached to a facemask. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said monitoring patient orientation further comprises: periodically monitoring patient orientation. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein modifying ventilator operation further comprises: modifying a protocol of said ventilator. 7. A system for modifying ventilator operation based on patient orientation, said system comprising: a patient orientation data accessor for accessing patient orientation monitoring data of a patient associated with a ventilator, wherein said patient orientation monitoring comprises at least one of an accelerometer and an RFID adapted to be attached to said patient;a patient identification accessor for identifying and electronically accessing a patient record of said patient associated with the ventilator; anda ventilator operation modifier for modifying operation of said ventilator based at least in part on said patient orientation and patient specific information about said identified patient record, said patient specific information comprising at least one of age, sex, height, and weight, said modifying operation of said ventilator comprising increasing an amount of gas delivered to said patient. 8. The system of claim 7, further comprising: a camera for capturing images of said patient. 9. The system of claim 7, further comprising: a patient orientation monitoring device for determining said patient orientation. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein said patient orientation monitoring data comprises: a plurality of accelerometers. 11. The system of claim 9, wherein said patient orientation monitoring data comprises: a plurality of accelerometers attached to a mask. 12. The system of claim 9, wherein said patient orientation monitoring data comprises: a plurality of RFIDs coupled with an accelerometer.
