An integrated monitor and display unit, comprising: a housing;a data receiver disposed in the housing and configured to receive data relating to analyte signals generated by a transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid;a port coupled to the housing and configured to receive an in vitro analyte sensor, the in vitro analyte sensor having a conductive material on an exterior or interior surface; anda processor disposed in the housing and configured to validate the data relating to monitored analyte signals received from the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor based at least in part on one or more signals from the in vitro analyte sensor, and further, to determine a type of in vitro analyte sensor when a presence of the in vitro analyte sensor in the port is detected; wherein the port is configured to receive a first type of in vitro analyte sensor which is not associated with one or more predetermined calibration parameters, and a second type of in vitro analyte sensor which is associated with the one or more predetermined calibration parameters; andwherein the processor is configured to generate a request to provide a calibration parameter associated with the in vitro analyte sensor when the determined type of the in vitro analyte sensor is of the first type, or to retrieve, from a storage unit operatively coupled to the processor, the one or more predetermined calibration parameters associated with the in vitro analyte sensor when the determined type of the in vitro analyte sensor is of the second type. 2. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to transition from an inactive mode to an active mode upon detection of the in vitro analyte sensor in the port. 3. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to turn on the integrated monitor and display unit by transitioning from the inactive mode to the active mode. 4. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 2, wherein the active mode comprises a fluid sample analysis mode. 5. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 4, wherein the fluid sample analysis mode includes the processor executing one or more routines to determine an analyte level from a fluid sample received from the in vitro analyte sensor. 6. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 2, wherein the port comprises at least a structure positioned to interact with the in vitro analyte sensor and transition the integrated monitor and display unit from the inactive mode to the active mode. 7. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 6, wherein the structure positioned to interact with the in vitro analyte sensor provides an electrical signal to transition the integrated monitor and display unit from the inactive mode to the active mode. 8. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to validate the data relating to the analyte signals generated by the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor by determining whether the analyte signals are within a predetermined range. 9. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to validate the data relating to the analyte signals generated by the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor by determining whether a rate of change of the analyte signals is within a predetermined range. 10. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to validate the data relating to the analyte signals generated by the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor prior to recommending and/or executing a therapy action based on the data relating to the analyte signals. 11. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the data receiver receives data from sensor electronics operatively coupled to the analyte sensor. 12. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the conductive material of the in vitro analyte sensor is a conductive strip extending at least partially across the exterior or interior surface of the in vitro analyte sensor. 13. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the conductive material of the in vitro analyte sensor includes at least two electrical contacts connected by a conductive ink. 14. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the conductive material on the exterior or interior surface of the in vitro analyte sensor is used to close an electrical circuit. 15. The integrated monitor and display unit of claim 1, wherein the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein the working electrode comprises an analyte-responsive enzyme and a mediator, wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer. 16. A method implemented using one or more processors, comprising: determining a type of in vitro analyte sensor when a presence of the in vitro analyte sensor is detected in a port, wherein the port is configured to receive a first type of in vitro analyte sensor which is not associated with stored one or more predetermined calibration parameters and a second type of in vitro analyte sensor which is associated with the stored one or more predetermined calibration parameters;executing one or more routines associated with processing one or more signals generated by the in vitro analyte sensor based on a fluid sample; andreceiving time spaced signals from sensor electronics, each of the received time spaced signal corresponding to a monitored analyte level from a transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid and operatively coupled to the sensor electronics; wherein executing the one or more routines further includes one or more of determining an analyte level from the fluid sample of the in vitro analyte sensor, calibrating the received time spaced signals, or displaying the calibrated time spaced signals; andwherein executing the one or more routines further includes generating a request to provide a calibration parameter associated with the in vitro analyte sensor when the determined type of the in vitro analyte sensor is of the first type, or retrieving from a storage unit the one or more predetermined calibration parameters associated with the in vitro analyte sensor when the determined type of the in vitro analyte sensor is of the second type. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein executing the one or more routines includes transitioning from an inactive operating mode to an active operating mode upon detection of the in vitro analyte sensor in the port. 18. The method of claim 16, further including determining a corresponding analyte level based on the one or more signals generated by the in vitro analyte sensor of the first type when the requested calibration parameter is received, and further, determining a corresponding analyte level based on the one or more signals generated by the in vitro analyte sensor of the second type based on the retrieved one or more calibration parameters. 19. The method of claim 16, further including calibrating the received time spaced signals based on the determined analyte level from the fluid sample. 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein the working electrode comprises an analyte-responsive enzyme and a mediator, wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.
