A biopsy apparatus, comprising: a housing;a cannula coupled to the housing and having a lumen, a proximal portion, a closed distal end, and an orifice located on a circumferential surface of the cannula, the orifice being configured to receive a tissue sample into the lumen of the cannula;a cutting sheath coaxially disposed with the cannula, the cutting sheath being configured to be movable relative to the cannula to selectively cover the orifice;a pressure generating device positioned in the housing and coupled to the proximal portion of the cannula, the pressure generating device defining a pressure chamber, the pressure generating device configured to selectively generate each of a positive pressure and a negative pressure;a bifurcated valve assembly interposed between the cannula and the pressure generating device, the bifurcated valve assembly including a first valve configured to release pressure into the lumen of the cannula and having a second valve coupled between the first valve and the pressure chamber, the second valve configured to facilitate an inflow of air into the pressure chamber of the pressure generating device, a first actuator configured to operate the first valve, a second actuator configured to operate the second valve, and an electronic system controller coupled to the first actuator and the second actuator configured to selectively control the first valve and the second valve. 6. The biopsy apparatus of claim 5, wherein: the first actuator is configured to control an opening and a closing of the first valve;the second actuator is configured to control an opening and a closing of the second valve; andthe electronic system controller is configured to control each of the first actuator and the second actuator to selectively control the opening and the closing of each of the first valve and the second valve. 7. The biopsy apparatus of claim 5, wherein the second valve is further configured to release pressure from the biopsy apparatus. 8. A biopsy apparatus, comprising: a cannula having a lumen, a proximal portion, a closed distal end, and an orifice located on a circumferential surface of the cannula, the orifice being configured to receive a tissue sample into the lumen of the cannula;a cutting sheath coaxially disposed with the cannula, the cutting sheath being configured to be movable relative to the cannula to selectively cover the orifice;a pressure generating device having a cylinder and a piston movable within the cylinder, and configured to selectively generate each of a positive pressure and a negative pressure, the pressure generating device coupled to the proximal portion of the cannula; anda bifurcated valve assembly interposed between the cannula and the pressure generating device, the bifurcated valve assembly having a first valve configured to release one of the positive pressure and the negative pressure into the lumen of the cannula, and having a second valve coupled between the first valve and the pressure generating device, the second valve configured to facilitate an inflow of air into the pressure generating device. 9. The biopsy apparatus of claim 8, further comprising: a first actuator configured to operate the first valve;a second actuator configured to operate the second valve; andan electronic system controller coupled to the first actuator and the second actuator configured to selectively control the first valve and the second valve. 10. The biopsy apparatus of claim 8, further comprising: a first actuator configured to control an opening and a closing of the first valve;a second actuator configured to control an opening and a closing of the second valve; andan electronic system controller coupled to the first actuator and the second actuator, and configured to selectively control the opening and the closing of each of the first valve and the second valve. 11. The biopsy apparatus of claim 8, wherein the second valve is further configured to release pressure from the biopsy apparatus.
