1. A method for separating an ethanol target molecule from a viscous hydrocarbon-containing material, the method comprising the steps of: (a) providing a source material comprising the viscous hydrocarbon-containing material and moving the source material into a liquification vessel for processing the source material to provide a liquid medium comprising reduced viscosity hydrocarbon-containing material and sugar-type molecule;(b) providing at least four cross-flow filtration cassettes comprising: an array of sheet members of generally rectangular and generally planar shape with main top and bottom surfaces, wherein the sheet members include in sequence in said array a first retentate sheet, a first filter sheet, a permeate sheet, a second filter sheet, and a second retentate sheet, wherein the liquid medium to be filtered flows across the filter sheets, solids or high-molecular-weight species of diameter larger than the filter sheet's pore size, are retained in the retentate flow, and at least a portion of the liquid medium with any permeate species diffuse through the filter sheets and enter the permeate sheet and permeate flow; wherein each of the sheet members in said array has at least one inlet basin opening at one end thereof, and at least one outlet basin opening at an opposite end thereof, with permeate passage openings at longitudinal side margin portions of the sheet members, wherein each of the first and second retentate sheets having a multiplicity of retentate channel openings therein extending longitudinally between the inlet and outlet basin openings of the sheets in the array, and being bonded to an adjacent filter sheet about peripheral end and side portions thereof, with their basin openings and permeate passage openings in register with one another and the permeate passage openings of each of the retentate sheets being circumscribingly bonded to the adjacent filter sheet, and with a central portion of each of the retentate sheets and adjacent filter sheets being unbonded to permit permeate contacting the retentate sheet to flow through the filter sheet to the permeate sheet and wherein the retentate channels openings have a sufficient height to allow unrestricted passage of any larger material and depending on the viscosity of the material in the retentate stream;(c) moving the liquid medium comprising the reduced viscosity hydrocarbon-containing material and sugar-type molecules from the liquification vessel through a first of the cross-flow filtration cassette to form a permeate stream and a retentate stream, wherein the permeate stream comprises sugar-type molecules for subsequent conversion to the ethanol target molecule and the retentate steam comprises other molecules that did not pass through the filter sheets of the first cross-flow cassette;(d) moving the permeate stream into a fermentation vessel comprising fermenting medium and fermentation microorganisms or enzymes for converting the permeate stream comprising sugar-type molecules to the ethanol target molecule and forming a fermentation stream;(e) moving the fermentation stream into a second cross-flow filtration cassette, wherein the ethanol target molecule is contained in the permeate stream and the retentate comprising solids and fermentation microorganisms or enzymes;(f) moving the permeate stream into a distillation column for subsequent capture of ethanol and moving the retentate stream into a third cross-flow filtration cassette for separation of the fermentation microorganisms or enzymes for recapture and further use; and(g) drawing the ethanol off in the distillation column and removing the bottom solution from the distillation column and introducing into a fourth cross-flow filtration cassette for providing a setback permeate stream for introduction into the fermentation vessel and reuse of the liquid therein and a retentate stream containing solids for reuse or sale as a viable product. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the viscous hydrocarbon-containing material is selected from the group consisting of corn grain, corn cobs, corn husks, corn stover, grasses, wheat, wheat grain, wheat straw, barley, barley straw, hay, rice straw, switchgrass, waste paper, sugar cane bagasse, sorghum, roots, leaves, wood chips, sawdust, shrubs, bushes, vegetables, fruits, flowers, animal manure and municipal waste. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the viscous hydrocarbon-containing material is a cellulosic based biomass and wherein the cellulosic material is converted into a sugar-type molecule in the liquification vessel. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the cellulosic based biomass is corn grain and wherein corn germ is removed before the cellulosic material is converted to sugar. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the viscous hydrocarbon-containing material has a viscosity from about 100 cP to about 100,000 cP. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the fermentation microorganisms are selected from the group consisting of fungi, yeast, bacteria, microalgae and macroalgae. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the retentate channel height is between 0.4 to 1.0 mm.
