The present disclosure relates to shelving systems and methods that are adaptable to a number of applications, including building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (“HVAC”) systems, shelving units for holding children's games and toys, closet organizers with hangers and shelves, storage systems in a garage or workshop, storage shelves over a garage door, and as a shelving unit for audio and visual equipment. The shelving unit includes a means for attachment to an overhead member, such as a steel beam, wood rafter, wood joist, wood beam, or ceiling, a generally J or L shaped bar, the ability to raise or lower the J or L shaped bar to provide for storage at different heights, an extension member removably coupled to the J or L bar, and wherein the extension member has a length that provides for storage space of different widths. In another aspect, an inverted shelving stand is provided. In still a further aspect, a U shaped swiveling hanging unit is provided.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the overhead member is selected from the group consisting of a steel beam, wood rafter, wood joist, wood beam or ceiling. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one vertical arm comprises one or more openings for receiving bolts or screws to attach the at least one vertical arm to the overhead member. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one vertical arm has a ceiling plate with clearance openings for receiving bolts or screws to attach the at least one vertical arm to a ceiling. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bar and the at least one vertical arm are square tubes which are telescopically coupled to each other. 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bar and the at least one vertical arm are adjustable in increments of two inches. 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of the first and second telescoping members comprises a coupling hook configured to receive a selected one of said horizontally extending arm and said like horizontally extending arm on the opposing J bar. 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one vertical arm has clearance openings on all four sides to allow the at least one vertical arm to be rotated ninety degrees and removably attached to the J bar without rotating the J bar. 9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein each telescoping member is formed of metal tubing having a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape; wherein each coupling hook is welded to a respective one of the telescoping members; and wherein each coupling hook is formed of sheet metal bent to form a first wall, a second wall substantially parallel to the first wall, and a third wall extending between the first wall and the second wall, the first, second, and third walls defining a channel having an inside dimension configured to make a sliding fit with a selected one of said horizontally extending arm and said like horizontally extending arm on the opposing J bar. 10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising: a generally U-shaped hanging support member comprising a first hook configured to removably engage the horizontally extending arm on the J bar and a second hook configured to removably engage said like horizontally extending arm on the opposing J bar. 11. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising: a pan having a generally planar bottom and sidewalls upstanding therefrom for the collection of water from an HVAC unit. 12. An apparatus for hanging an HVAC unit, comprising: a first vertical arm adapted to be attached at its top end to an overhead member;a first bar adapted to be slidably coupled to the first vertical arm and having a first horizontally extending arm located at the bottom of the first bar to form a first J bar;clearance openings located in the first vertical arm and in the first J bar for receiving one or more fasteners for attaching the first vertical arm to the first J bar to raise or lower the first horizontally extending arm for supporting the HVAC unit at different heights;a second vertical arm adapted to be attached at its top end to an overhead member;a second bar adapted to be slidably coupled to the second vertical arm and having a second horizontally extending arm located at the bottom of the second bar to form a second J bar;clearance openings located in the second vertical arm and in the second J bar for receiving one or more fasteners for attaching the second vertical arm to the second J bar to raise or lower the second horizontally extending arm for supporting the HVAC unit at different heights;a first extension member removably and telescopically coupled to the first and second horizontally extending arms;a third vertical arm adapted to be attached at its top end to an overhead member;a third bar adapted to be slidably coupled to the third vertical arm and having a third horizontally extending arm located at the bottom of the third bar to form a third J bar;clearance openings located in the third vertical arm and in the third J bar for receiving one or more fasteners for attaching the third vertical arm to the third J bar to raise or lower the third horizontally extending arm for supporting the HVAC unit at different heights;a fourth vertical arm adapted to be attached at its top end to an overhead member;a fourth bar adapted to be slidably coupled to the fourth vertical arm and having a fourth horizontally extending arm located at the bottom of the fourth bar to form a fourth J bar;clearance openings located in the fourth vertical arm and in the fourth J bar for receiving one or more fasteners for attaching the fourth vertical arm to the fourth J bar to raise or lower the fourth horizontally extending arm for supporting the HVAC unit at different heights;a second extension member removably and telescopically coupled to the third and fourth horizontally extending arms, wherein each of the first and second extension members has a length that provides for adjustment of the size of the apparatus in a first horizontal direction; andone or both of a first support member extending between the first horizontally extending arm and third horizontally extending arm and a second support member extending between the second horizontally extending arm and fourth horizontally extending arm, the one or more support members:(a) being adapted to be removably attached to the first and third horizontally extending arms;(b) extending in a second horizontal direction substantially pendicular to the first horizontal direction; and(c) comprising first and second telescoping members slidably coupled so that a length of the first and second support members in the second horizontal direction is adjustable. 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein each of the first and second telescoping members comprises a coupling hook configured to receive a selected one of the first, second, third, and fourth horizontally extending arms. 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein: each telescoping member is formed of metal tubing having a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape;wherein each coupling hook is welded to a respective one of the telescoping members; andwherein each coupling hook is formed of sheet metal bent to form a first wall, a second wall substantially parallel to the first wall, and a third wall extending between the first wall and the second wall, the first, second, and third walls defining a channel having an inside dimension configured to make a sliding fit with a selected one of the first second, third, and fourth horizontally extending arms. 16. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising: a first generally U-shaped hanging support member comprising a first hook configured to removably engage the first horizontally extending arm and a second hook configured to removably engage the second horizontally extending arm; anda second generally U-shaped hanging support member comprising a third hook configured to removably engage the third horizontally extending arm and a fourth hook configured to removably engage the fourth horizontally extending arm. 17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising: a pan supported at a first end thereof by the first generally U-shaped hanging support member and at a second end thereof by the second generally U-shaped hanging support member, the pan having a generally planar bottom and sidewalls upstanding therefrom for the collection of water from an HVAC unit.
