A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles within the carton, comprising: a conveyor moving the carton along a path of travel; andan actuating assembly positioned along the path of travel of the carton, the actuating assembly including: actuating elements movable from a first position to a second position to engage the article protection features,wherein the actuating elements engage the article protection features as the carton moves past the actuating elements, with different ones of the actuating elements engaging different ones of the article protection features at offset intervals, to cause the article protection features to be projected into the carton,wherein the actuating assembly further comprises wheels arranged at spaced intervals along the path of travel of the carton, each of the wheels having a plurality of actuating elements arranged at spaced positions around the wheels,wherein at least one wheel of the wheels comprises a rotating carrier to which its actuating elements are movably attached, and a cam assembly including a cam track, wherein the actuating elements are moved along the cam track with the rotation of the rotating carrier, causing the actuating elements to be oriented so as to be moved into engagement with corresponding article protection features of the carton. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one wheel of the wheels comprises a hub and a body portion surrounding the hub, wherein the plurality of actuating elements of the at least one wheel are fixedly mounted in groups arranged at spaced intervals about a periphery of the body portion. 3. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles within the carton, comprising: a conveyor moving the carton along a path of travel; andan actuating assembly positioned along the path of travel of the carton, the actuating assembly including: actuating elements movable from a first position to a second position to engage the article protection features,wherein the actuating elements engage the article protection features as the carton moves past the actuating elements, with different ones of the actuating elements engaging different ones of the article protection features at offset intervals, to cause the article protection features to be projected into the carton,wherein the actuating assembly further comprises wheels arranged at spaced intervals along the path of travel of the carton, each of the wheels having a plurality of actuating elements arranged at spaced positions around the wheels,wherein each of the wheels comprises a hub adapted to slidably mount on a drive shaft for locating the actuating elements of each wheel at a desired position with respect to the carton passing by the actuating assembly, and a releasable locking mechanism having a catch biased into engagement with a locking groove formed along the drive shaft. 4. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles within the carton, comprising: a conveyor moving the carton along a path of travel; andan actuating assembly positioned along the path of travel of the carton, the actuating assembly including: actuating elements movable from a first position to a second position to engage the article protection features,wherein the actuating elements engage the article protection features as the carton moves past the actuating elements, with different ones of the actuating elements engaging different ones of the article protection features at offset intervals, to cause the article protection features to be projected into the carton,wherein the actuating assembly further comprises an overload protection mechanism supporting at least a portion of the actuating elements and adapted to enable movement of the actuating elements away from the path of travel of the carton upon encountering a back pressure when engaging the article protection features. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises wheels mounted on a drive shaft and rotating in timed relation with movement of the carton along the path of travel, the wheels each including groups of the actuating elements arranged in spaced series thereabout, and wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a cylinder connected to the drive shaft of each wheel of the wheels, each cylinder biasing its wheel toward a first operative position while enabling the wheel to move to a second portion with its actuating elements out of engagement with the carton. 6. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles within the carton, comprising: a conveyor moving the carton along a path of travel; andan actuating assembly positioned along the path of travel of the carton, the actuating assembly including: actuating elements movable from a first position to a second position to engage the article protection features,wherein the actuating elements engage the article protection features as the carton moves past the actuating elements, with different ones of the actuating elements engaging different ones of the article protection features at offset intervals, to cause the article protection features to be projected into the carton,wherein the actuating assembly comprises a carrier movable along the conveyor, the carrier including an upper surface on which the carton is received and having openings through which the actuating elements are moved; and guide tracks over which the carrier is moved, wherein the guide tracks are engaged by cams linked to the actuating elements so as to cause the actuating elements to be moved through the openings of the carrier for engaging and activating the article protection features of the carton. 7. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles within the carton, comprising: a conveyor moving the carton along a path of travel; andan actuating assembly positioned along the path of travel of the carton, the actuating assembly including: actuating elements movable from a first position to a second position to engage the article protection features,wherein the actuating elements engage the article protection features as the carton moves past the actuating elements, with different ones of the actuating elements engaging different ones of the article protection features at offset intervals, to cause the article protection features to be projected into the carton,wherein the actuating assembly comprises at least one cassette mounted along the conveyor and having a drive member carrying the actuating elements along a path substantially parallel to the path of travel of the carton, and a cam track extending along the cassette and along which the actuating elements move for guiding the actuating elements into engagement with the article protection features of the carton. 8. A packaging machine for packaging articles within a carton, comprising: a loading section at which the articles are loaded into the carton; and an actuating assembly that activates article protection features in the carton; wherein the actuating assembly comprises actuating elements movable into engagement with the article protection features to move the article protection features into operative positions in engagement with two adjacent articles of the articles, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises rotating members arranged at spaced intervals along a path of travel of the carton, each of the rotating members having actuating elements arranged in spaced series,wherein at least one rotating member of the rotating members comprises a rotating carrier portion to which its actuating elements are movably attached, and a cam portion having a cam track formed thereabout, wherein the actuating elements are moved along the cam track with the rotation of the carrier portion, causing the actuating elements to be oriented and moved into engagement with corresponding article protection features of the carton; and wherein the at least one rotating member of the rotating members comprises a hub and a body portion surrounding the hub, wherein the plurality of actuating elements of the at least one rotating member are fixedly mounted in groups arranged at spaced intervals about a periphery of the body portion. 9. A packaging machine for packaging articles within a carton, comprising: a loading section at which the articles are loaded into the carton; and an actuating assembly that activates article protection features in the carton; wherein the actuating assembly comprises actuating elements movable into engagement with the article protection features to move the article protection features into operative positions in engagement with two adjacent articles of the articles, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises rotating members arranged at spaced intervals along a path of travel of the carton, each of the rotating members having actuating elements arranged in spaced series,wherein the actuating assembly further comprises an overload protection mechanism supporting at least a portion of the actuating elements and adapted to enable movement of the actuating elements away from the path of travel of the carton upon encountering a back pressure when engaging the article protection features. 10. A packaging machine for packaging articles within a carton, comprising: a loading section at which the articles are loaded into the carton; and an actuating assembly that activates article protection features in the carton; wherein the actuating assembly comprises actuating elements movable into engagement with the article protection features to move the article protection features into operative positions in engagement with two adjacent articles of the articles, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises rotating members arranged at spaced intervals along a path of travel of the carton, each of the rotating members having actuating elements arranged in spaced series,wherein the actuating assembly comprises a carrier movable along a conveyor, the carrier including an upper surface on which the carton is received and having openings through which the actuating elements are moved; and guide tracks over which the carrier is moved, wherein the guide tracks are engaged by cams linked to the actuating elements so as to cause the actuating elements to be moved through the openings of the carrier for engaging and activating the article protection features. 11. A packaging machine for packaging articles within a carton, comprising: a loading section at which the articles are loaded into the carton; and an actuating assembly that activates article protection features in the carton; wherein the actuating assembly comprises actuating elements movable into engagement with the article protection features to move the article protection features into operative positions in engagement with two adjacent articles of the articles, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises wheels having a plurality of actuating elements arranged at spaced positions around the wheels, and wherein each of the wheels comprises a hub adapted to slidably mount on a drive shaft for locating the actuating elements of each wheel at a desired position with respect to the carton passing by the actuating assembly, and a releasable locking mechanism having a catch biased into engagement with a locking groove formed along the drive shaft. 12. A system for moving article protection features into engagement with articles in an interior of a carton, the articles including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the article protection features including at least a first article protection feature and a second article protection feature, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating member and a second actuating member; the first actuating member moves the first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton; the second actuating member moves the second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton;wherein the second article protection feature moves into the interior of the carton at a different interval from the first article protection feature;wherein the articles are breakable, the system further comprising:an overload protection mechanism that disengages the first actuating member from engagement with the carton upon encountering a back pressure from moving the first article protection feature into the engaged position in the interior of the carton. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a cylinder biasing the first actuating member toward a first operative position while enabling the first actuating member to move to a second position with the first actuating member out of engagement with the carton. 14. The system of claim 12, wherein the second article protection feature is moved by the second actuating element after the first article protection feature is moved by the first actuating element. 15. A system for moving article protection features into engagement with articles in an interior of a carton, the articles including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the article protection features including at least a first article protection feature and a second article protection feature, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating member and a second actuating member; the first actuating member moves the first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton; the second actuating member moves the second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton;wherein the second article protection feature moves into the interior of the carton at a different interval from the first article protection feature;wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are engaged at spaced intervals to enable the articles in the carton to move as the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved into the interior of the carton;wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved simultaneously. 16. A system for moving article protection features into engagement with articles in an interior of a carton, the articles including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the article protection features including at least a first article protection feature and a second article protection feature, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating member and a second actuating member; the first actuating member moves the first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton; the second actuating member moves the second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton;wherein the second article protection feature moves into the interior of the carton at a different interval from the first article protection feature;wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved simultaneously. 17. A system for moving article protection features into engagement with articles in an interior of a carton, the articles including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the article protection features including at least a first article protection feature and a second article protection feature, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating member and a second actuating member; the first actuating member moves the first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton; the second actuating member moves the second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton;wherein the second article protection feature moves into the interior of the carton at a different interval from the first article protection feature;wherein the carton is moved on a carrier along a path of travel; the system including at least one cam track; and wherein the cam track causes the first actuating member and the second actuating member to move into engagement with the carton. 18. A system for moving article protection features into engagement with articles in an interior of a carton, the articles including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the article protection features including at least a first article protection feature and a second article protection feature, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating member and a second actuating member; the first actuating member moves the first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton; the second actuating member moves the second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton;wherein the second article protection feature moves into the interior of the carton at a different interval from the first article protection feature;wherein the first actuating member is mounted on a wheel, and wherein the first actuating member is moved about a cam track to orient the first actuating member toward engagement with the first article protection feature. 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the second article protection feature is moved by the second actuating element after the first article protection feature is moved by the first actuating element. 20. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including at least a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including at least a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element moves a first article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moves a second article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article,wherein the articles are breakable, the system further comprising:an overload protection mechanism that disengages the first actuating element from engagement with the carton upon encountering a back pressure from moving the first article protection feature into the extended position in the interior of the carton. 21. The system of claim 20, wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a cylinder biasing the first actuating element toward a first operative position while enabling the first actuating element to move to a second position with the first actuating element out of engagement with the carton. 22. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including at least a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including at least a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element moves a first article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moves a second article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article,wherein the first article protection feature is moved into the interior of the carton in a first direction and wherein the second article protection feature is moved into the interior of the carton in a second direction, and wherein the first direction is opposite the second direction. 23. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including at least a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including at least a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element moves a first article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moves a second article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article,wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are engaged at spaced intervals to enable the articles in the carton to move as the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved into the interior of the carton. 24. The system of claim 23, wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved simultaneously. 25. The system of claim 23, wherein the second article protection feature is moved by the second actuating element after the first article protection feature is moved by the first actuating element. 26. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including at least a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including at least a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element moves a first article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moves a second article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article,wherein the carton is moved on a carrier along a path of travel; the system including at least one cam track; and wherein the cam track causes the first actuating element and the second actuating element into engagement with the carton. 27. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including at least a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including at least a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element moves a first article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moves a second article protection feature into an extended position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article,wherein the first actuating element is mounted on a wheel, and wherein the first actuating element is moved about a cam track to orient the first actuating element toward engagement with the first article protection feature. 28. The system of claim 27, wherein the second article protection feature is moved by the second actuating element after the first article protection feature is moved by the first actuating element. 29. A system for engaging article protection features of a carton to stabilize articles in an interior of the carton, the articles being disposed in at least a first row and a second row, the articles in the first row including a first article and a second article adjacent the first article, the articles in the second row including a third article and a fourth article adjacent the third article, the system comprising: an actuating assembly including at least a first actuating element and a second actuating element; the first actuating element engages and moves a first article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton to engage the first article and the second article, and to move at least the second article; the second actuating element moving a second article protection feature into an engaged position in the interior of the carton to engage the third article and the fourth article, and to move at least the fourth article;wherein the actuating assembly further comprises an overload protection mechanism that disengages the first actuating element from engagement with the carton upon encountering a back pressure from moving the first article protection feature into the engaged position in the interior of the carton. 30. The system of claim 29, wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a cylinder biasing the first actuating element toward a first operative position while enabling the first actuating element to move to a second position with the first actuating element out of engagement with the first article protection feature. 31. The system of claim 29, wherein the first article protection feature is moved into the interior of the carton in a first direction and wherein the second article protection feature is moved into the interior of the carton in a second direction, and wherein the first direction is opposite the second direction. 32. The system of claim 29, wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are engaged at spaced intervals to enable the articles in the carton to move as the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved into the interior of the carton. 33. The system of claim 32, wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved simultaneously. 34. The system of claim 29, wherein the first article protection feature and the second article protection feature are moved simultaneously. 35. The system of claim 29, wherein the carton is moved on a carrier along a path of travel; the system including at least one cam track; and wherein the cam track causes the first actuating element and the second actuating element to move into engagement with the carton. 36. The system of claim 29, wherein the first actuating element is mounted on a wheel, and wherein the first actuating element is moved about a cam track to orient the first actuating element toward engagement with the first article protection feature. 37. The system of claim 29, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises at least a first wheel and a second wheel, the first actuating element being disposed on the first wheel and the second actuating element being disposed on the second wheel, wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a first cylinder biasing the first wheel toward an first operative position with the first actuating element in engagement with the carton while enabling the first wheel to move out of engagement with the carton to a first nonoperative position, andwherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a second cylinder biasing the second actuating element toward a second operative position with the second actuating element in engagement with the carton while enabling the second wheel to move out of engagement with the carton to a second nonoperative position. 38. The system of claim 29, wherein the actuating assembly further comprises: at least a first wheel, the first actuating element and the second actuating element being disposed on the first wheel,wherein the overload protection mechanism comprises a first cylinder biasing the first wheel toward a first operative position with the first actuating element in engagement with the carton while enabling the first wheel to move out of engagement with the carton to a first nonoperative position. 39. The system of claim 29, wherein the second article protection feature is moved by the second actuating element after the first article protection feature is moved by the first actuating element.
