Provided is an image transfer material, comprising a support, optionally at least one barrier layer, a melt transfer layer, and an image receiving layer. Also provided is a process for preparing the image transfer material. Further provided is a heat transfer process using the disclosed material. In the heat transfer process, after imaging, the image receiving layer and melt transfer layer are peeled away from the optionally barrier-coated support material and placed, preferably image side up, on top of a receptor element. A non-stick sheet is then optionally placed over the imaged peeled material and heat is applied to the top of the optional non stick sheet. The melt transfer layer then melts and adheres the image to the receptor element. A composition comprising: at least one self-crosslinking polymer, and at least one dye retention aid.

1. A method of transferring an image transfer article to a receptor element, the method comprising: providing or receiving an image transfer article configured to receive an image independently of a support layer that doesn't transfer to the receptor element, the image transfer article having (i) an image receiving layer including an image receiving surface configured to receive an image, (ii) a melt transfer layer having a top surface and a bottom surface, and (iii) at least one opaque layer positioned between the image receiving layer and the top surface of the melt transfer layer;positioning the image transfer article so that the bottom surface of the melt transfer layer is in direct contact with a first surface of a receptor element, wherein the at least one opaque layer is configured to provide an opaque background for at least a portion of the image; andapplying heat up to about 220° C. to the image transfer article such that the image receiving layer, the at least one opaque layer, and the melt transfer layer concurrently transfer in their entirety and adhere to the receptor element. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising, after positioning the image transfer article, placing at least a portion of a non-stick sheet over the image transfer article before applying heat. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising imaging or imprinting the image on the image receiving surface before positioning the image transfer article. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the step of imaging or imprinting the image comprises imaging or imprinting the image on the image receiving surface without inversion or reversal of the image. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising imaging or imprinting a second image on the image receiving surface after applying heat. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the receptor element comprises a second surface, opposite the first surface, and the step of applying heat comprises applying heat to the second surface of the receptor element. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one opaque layer has a thickness between about 0.5 mils and about 2.5 mils. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one opaque layer comprises a first and a second opaque layer. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the first opaque layer has a composition that is different from a composition of the second opaque layer. 10. A method of imaging an image on an image transfer article, the method comprising: providing or receiving an image transfer article comprising (i) an image transfer member including a receiving layer having an image receiving surface configured to receive an image, a melt transfer layer, and at least one opaque layer positioned between the image receiving layer and the melt transfer layer; andimaging or imprinting an image on the image receiving surface of the image transfer member;wherein the at least one opaque layer is configured to provide a rigid or stiff quality to the image transfer article such that the melt transfer layer, the image receiving layer, and the one or more opaque layers can function independently of a support layer during imaging or imprinting. 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising: positioning the image transfer member on a receptor element so that a surface of the melt transfer layer is in direct contact with the receptor element; andapplying heat up to about 220° C. to the image receiving surface such that the image receiving layer, the opaque layer, and the melt transfer layer concurrently transfer in their entirety and adhere to the receptor element. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising, after positioning the image transfer article, placing at least a portion of a non-stick sheet over the image transfer member before applying heat. 13. The method of claim 11, further comprising imaging or imprinting a second image on the image receiving surface after applying heat. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of imaging or imprinting an image on the image receiving surface comprises imaging or imprinting the image without inversion or reversal of the image. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one opaque layer has a thickness between about 0.5 mils and about 2.5 mils. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one opaque layer comprises a first and a second opaque layer. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first opaque layer has a composition that is different from a composition of the second opaque layer.
