A cartridge for forming a beverage includes a container defining an interior space, a filter, a beverage medium contained in the interior space, and a filter guard. The filter may be arranged so that liquid that interacts with the beverage medium flows through the filter to exit the interior space. The container may include a surface arranged to be pierced by a piercing member to permit beverage to exit the container. The filter guard may be arranged to contact the piercing member to resist damage to the filter when the container surface is pierced. In one embodiment, the filter guard and filter may be in contact with the container surface that is pierced, yet damage to the filter that might be caused by the piercing element may be avoided.

1. A method of making a beverage, comprising: providing a beverage machine comprising a receptacle arranged to receive a cartridge, a fluid inlet arranged to introduce liquid into an opening at a top of the cartridge, and a fluid outlet including a piercing element arranged to pierce a bottom surface of the cartridge at a location away from a center of the bottom surface of the cartridge:providing a cartridge in the receptacle of the beverage machine, the cartridge including an interior space comprising a beverage medium, a filter and a filter guard below the filter;piercing the bottom surface of the cartridge at a location away from the center of the bottom surface by moving the piercing element through the bottom surface at the location away from the center of the bottom surface and into the interior space so the piercing element itself forms an opening in the bottom surface offset from the center of the bottom surface to permit a beverage to exit the cartridge via the opening in the bottom surface, and wherein the piercing element does not penetrate through the center of the bottom surface of the cartridge;contacting the filter guard with the piercing element as the piercing element moves into the interior space so as to cause the filter guard to tilt relative to the bottom surface of the cartridge to displace the filter in the interior space and to resist damage to the filter by the piercing element;introducing a liquid into a first portion of the interior space by way of the fluid inlet;flowing the liquid from the first portion through the filter and into a second portion of the interior space; andpermitting a beverage to exit the cartridge from the second portion through the opening in the bottom surface formed by the piercing element, wherein the first portion is located above the second portion. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the contacting of the filter guard comprises deforming at least a portion of the filter. 3. The method of dam 4, wherein the step of piercing the bottom surface comprises piercing the bottom surface of the cartridge at an annular area positioned around the center of the bottom surface such that the opening in the bottom surface is away from the center of the bottom surface of the cartridge. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the filter is arranged so that the liquid that interacts with the beverage medium in the first portion of the interior space flows through the filter toward the second portion of the interior space. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the opening at the top of the cartridge is dosed by a lid, the method further comprising piercing the lid with the fluid inlet. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the filter guard has a disc shape. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the filter guard comprises a body with at least one channel arranged to permit liquid to flow past the body. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the filter guard is attached to the filter. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the cartridge has a frustoconical shape with a sidewall and a bottom, the filter has a cup shape, and the filter guard includes a disc shaped body at the bottom surface of the cartridge. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the cartridge includes a container that defines the bottom surface and the step of contacting the filter guard includes providing a flow channel at a periphery of the filter guard between the filter guard and the container to allow the beverage that flows through the filter to flow past the filter guard toward the bottom surface of the cartridge via the flow channel. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the filter guard includes a plurality of extension portions, and the step of contacting the filter guard to tilt the filter guard includes contacting an extension portion to move the extension portion and cause the extension portion to displace a portion of the filter. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the cartridge includes a container that defines the bottom surface and each extension portion has a petal shape with a portion that is fixed to the container and a movable portion arranged to move relative to the fixed portion with contact of the piercing element. 13. A method of making a beverage, comprising: providing a cartridge container defining an interior space and having a sidewall and a bottom, the cartridge container including in the interior space a beverage medium, a filter having a cup shape and a filter guard below the filter, the filter guard including a plurality of extension portions that each have a fixed portion that is fixed to the cartridge container and a movable portion arranged for movement relative to the fixed portion with contact by a piercing element:piercing the bottom of the cartridge at a location away from a center of the bottom by moving the piercing element through the bottom at a location away from the center and into the interior space so the piercing element itself forms an opening in the bottom offset from the center of the bottom to permit a beverage to exit the cartridge container via the opening in the bottom, and wherein the piercing element does not penetrate through the center of the bottom surface of the cartridge; andfurther inserting the piercing element through the opening in the bottom and into the interior space of the cartridge container to contact and move the movable portion of one of the plurality of extension portions of the filter guard in the interior space of the cartridge container, movable portions of other ones of the extension portions remaining stationary relative to the cartridge container, and movement of the movable portion of the one of the plurality of extension portions by the piercing element causing the filter in the interior space of the cartridge container to be displaced and deforming the cup shape of the filter, wherein the contacting step avoids damage to the filter by the piercing element;introducing a liquid into the interior space of the cartridge container; andpermitting a beverage to exit the cartridge container through the opening in the bottom formed by the piercing element. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising: providing a beverage machine comprising a receptacle arranged to receive the cartridge container, a fluid net arranged to introduce liquid into the cartridge container, and a fluid outlet including the piercing element arranged to pierce the bottom of the cartridge container; andplacing the cartridge container into the receptacle of the beverage machine. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising: introducing a liquid into the interior space of the cartridge container by way of the fluid inlet. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of piercing the bottom comprises piercing a portion of the bottom of the cartridge container at an annular area positioned around the center of the bottom such that the opening in the bottom is away from the center of the bottom of the cartridge container. 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the filter is arranged so that liquid that interacts with the beverage medium in a first portion of the interior space flows through the filter toward a second portion of the interior space. 18. The method of claim 13, wherein the extension portions of the filter guard each have a flower petal-like shape. 19. The method of claim 13, wherein the cartridge container has a frustoconical shape. 20. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of inserting the piercing element includes causing the movable portion of the one of the extension portions of the filter guard to tilt relative to the bottom of the cartridge container.
