Systems, devices, and associated methods for correcting spinal column deformities that help minimize a number of attachment anchors utilized for correction, facilitate use of straight or contoured rods, and/or help promote a more natural, physiologic motion of the spinal column.
1. A method of correcting a spinal deformity, the method comprising: securing a first rod anchor to a first vertebra of a spine and a second rod anchor to a second vertebra of the spine;slidably receiving a rod through a first pivot point in the first rod anchor and receiving the rod through a secon
1. A method of correcting a spinal deformity, the method comprising: securing a first rod anchor to a first vertebra of a spine and a second rod anchor to a second vertebra of the spine;slidably receiving a rod through a first pivot point in the first rod anchor and receiving the rod through a second pivot point in the second rod anchor, such that the rod is secured against substantial lateral translation relative to the first and second rod anchors and the rod is free to slide axially relative to the first rod anchor and change in pitch and yaw about the first and second pivot points during a correction of the spinal deformity, the first rod anchor having a first housing with a ring shaped portion defining a passage therethrough, the passage including opposed convex surfaces and the ring shaped portion of the first housing having opposed openings for receiving the rod therethrough and the passage having a diameter less than a diameter of one of the opposed openings;securing an anchor arm to a portion of the spine having an abnormal curvature in need of correction;connecting a force directing member to at least a portion of the anchor arm and a coupler, the coupler connecting the force directing member to the rod; andcorrecting the abnormal curvature by adjusting a distance between the rod and the anchor arm. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising reducing the distance between the rod and anchor arm by adjusting the coupler during correction of the abnormal curvature. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the distance is reduced by rotating at least a portion of the coupler. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein the distance is reduced incrementally. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising reducing an effective length of the first force directing member by adjusting the coupler during the correction, wherein the effective length is defined by a distance between the coupler and the anchor arm. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein securing the anchor arm to the portion of the spine having an abnormal curvature in need of correction includes extending a portion of the anchor arm across one side of the spine to an opposite side of the spine. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising securing the anchor arm to the portion of the spine having an abnormal curvature by extending a pedicle screw through the portion of the anchor arm and securing the pedicle screw to the spine. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the force directing member is secured to the coupler by using a connection method including at least one of welding, threadably connecting and adhesive bonding the force directing member to the coupler. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising connecting the coupler to the rod such that the coupler is substantially fixed with respect to the rod against lateral translation. 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising connecting the coupler to the rod such that the coupler is movable with respect to the rod. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein correcting the abnormal curvature by adjusting a distance between the rod and the anchor arm includes pulling the anchor arm toward the coupler. 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising limiting at least one of pitch, yaw, and roll movement of the rod at the first rod anchor. 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising restricting relative movement of the rod with respect to the first rod anchor by an interaction of a sleeve portion and a receptacle portion of the first rod anchor. 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising limiting sliding movement of the rod at the first rod anchor. 15. The method of claim 1, further comprising limiting at least one of pitch, yaw, and roll movement of the rod at the second rod anchor. 16. A method of correcting a spinal deformity, the method comprising: securing a first rod anchor to a first vertebra of a spine and a second rod anchor to a second vertebra of the spine;slidably receiving a rod through a first pivot point in the first rod anchor and receiving the rod through a second pivot point in the second rod anchor, such that the rod is secured against substantial lateral translation relative to the first and second rod anchors and the rod is free to slide axially relative to the first rod anchor and to change in pitch and yaw about the first and the second pivot points during correction of the spinal deformity the first rod anchor having a first housing with opposed openings for slidably receiving the rod, the openings tapering towards each other and defining a minimum diameter of the first housing;securing an anchor arm to a portion of the spine having an abnormal curvature in need of correction;connecting a force directing member to at least a portion of the anchor arm and to a coupler, the coupler connecting the force directing member to the rod;correcting the abnormal curvature by decreasing a distance between the rod and the anchor arm; andlimiting at least one of pitch, yaw, and roll movement of the rod at the first pivot point. 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising limiting at least one of pitch, yaw, and roll movement of the rod at the second pivot point. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein slidably receiving the rod through the first pivot point in the first rod anchor includes the first housing having opposed convex surfaces defining the minimum diameter of the housing such that the rod is slidable through the first housing while constrained from side to side movement within the first housing. 19. The method of claim 16, wherein slidably receiving the rod through the first pivot point in the first rod anchor includes the rod having adjustable yaw, adjustable pitch, or adjustable roll with respect to the first rod anchor. 20. A method of correcting a spinal deformity, the method comprising: securing a first rod anchor to a first vertebra of a spine and a second rod anchor to a second vertebra of the spine;slidably receiving a rod through a first pivot point in the first rod anchor and receiving the rod through a second pivot point in the second rod anchor, such that the rod is secured against substantial lateral translation relative to the first rod anchor and the rod is free to slide axially relative to the first rod anchor and change in pitch and yaw about the first and the second pivot points during a correction of the spinal deformity, the first rod anchor having a first housing with opposed openings for slidably receiving the rod, the openings tapering towards each other and defining a minimum diameter of the first housing;securing an anchor arm to a portion of the spine having an abnormal curvature in need of correction, the anchor arm extending laterally across the spine; andchanging a relative alignment of the portion of the spine in need of the correction by leveraging the anchor arm while the rod is free to change in at least pitch and yaw at the first and the second pivot points during the correction.
