The present invention relates to a method of altering the refractive properties of the eye, the method including applying a substance to a cornea of an eye, the substance configured to facilitate cross linking of the cornea, irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross linkers in the cornea, and altering the cornea so as to change the refractive properties of the eye.

1. A method of altering the refractive properties of the eye, said method comprising: forming a pocket in a cornea of an eye of a patient so as to gain access to tissue bounding the pocket, wherein the forming of the pocket in the cornea of the eye severs some corneal nerves supplying a front surfac
1. A method of altering the refractive properties of the eye, said method comprising: forming a pocket in a cornea of an eye of a patient so as to gain access to tissue bounding the pocket, wherein the forming of the pocket in the cornea of the eye severs some corneal nerves supplying a front surface of the cornea so as to reduce the postoperative pain sensation that is felt by the patient, but does not sever all of the corneal nerves supplying the front surface of the cornea so as to prevent a formation of dry eye in the patient;after the pocket in the cornea has been formed, applying a photosensitizer inside the pocket so that the photosensitizer permeates at least a portion of the tissue bounding the pocket, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue bounding the pocket;after the photosensitizer has been applied inside the pocket, irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the pocket and thereby stiffen the cornea;after the cornea has been stiffened by the activation of the cross-linkers, inserting a lens implant into the pocket so as to change the refractive properties of the eye; andafter the lens implant has been inserted into the pocket, ablating the front surface of the cornea so as to further alter the refractive properties of the eye and to eliminate any residual refractive error remaining after initial refractive error correction by the lens implant. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the photosensitizer comprises riboflavin. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the interior tissue of the cornea comprises irradiating the cornea with at least one of ultraviolet light and microwaves. 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the pocket comprises irradiating the cornea such that only a predetermined anterior stromal portion of the cornea to which the photosensitizer was applied is cross-linked, thereby leaving an anterior portion of the cornea and a posterior stromal portion of the cornea uncross-linked. 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the front surface of the cornea is ablated using an excimer laser in order to change the refractive properties of the eye. 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of ablating a front surface of the cornea so as to change the refractive properties of the eye comprises performing a photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) procedure on the front surface of the cornea. 7. A method of altering the refractive properties of the eye, said method comprising: forming an intrastromal pocket in a cornea of an eye of a patient so as to gain access to tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket, wherein the forming of the intrastromal pocket in the cornea of the eye severs some corneal nerves supplying a front surface of the cornea so as to reduce the postoperative pain sensation that is felt by the patient, but does not sever all of the corneal nerves supplying the front surface of the cornea so as to prevent a formation of dry eye in the patient;after the intrastromal pocket in the cornea has been formed, applying a photosensitizer inside the intrastromal pocket so that the photosensitizer permeates at least a portion of the tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket;after the photosensitizer has been applied inside the intrastromal pocket, irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket and thereby stiffen the cornea;after the cornea has been stiffened by the activation of the cross-linkers, inserting a lens implant into the intrastromal pocket so as to change the refractive properties of the eye; andafter the lens implant has been inserted into the intrastromal pocket, ablating the front surface of the cornea so as to further alter the refractive properties of the eye and to eliminate any residual refractive error remaining after initial refractive error correction by the lens implant. 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the photosensitizer comprises riboflavin. 9. The method according to claim 7, wherein the step of irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket comprises irradiating the cornea with at least one of ultraviolet light and microwaves. 10. The method according to claim 7, wherein the step of irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the intrastromal pocket comprises irradiating the cornea such that only a predetermined anterior stromal portion of the cornea to which the photosensitizer was applied is cross-linked, thereby leaving an anterior portion of the cornea and a posterior stromal portion of the cornea uncross-linked. 11. The method according to claim 7, wherein the front surface of the cornea is ablated using an excimer laser in order to change the refractive properties of the eye. 12. The method according to claim 7, wherein the step of ablating a front surface of the cornea so as to change the refractive properties of the eye comprises performing a photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) procedure on the front surface of the cornea. 13. The method according to claim 7, further comprising the steps of: forming an additional pocket in the cornea of the eye of the patient so as to gain access to tissue bounding the additional pocket, wherein the forming of the additional pocket in the cornea of the eye severs some corneal nerves supplying the front surface of the cornea so as to reduce the postoperative pain sensation that is felt by the patient, but does not sever all of the corneal nerves supplying the front surface of the cornea so as to prevent a formation of dry eye in the patient;after the additional pocket in the cornea has been formed, applying the photosensitizer inside the additional pocket so that the photosensitizer permeates at least a portion of the tissue bounding the additional pocket, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue bounding the additional pocket; andfurther irradiating the cornea so as to activate cross-linkers in the portion of the tissue bounding the additional pocket and thereby stiffen the cornea.
