A ventilator with a safe standby mode is provided. The safe standby mode allows a user to disconnect a patient from the ventilator, without the ventilator generating alarms and while maintaining previously entered ventilation parameters. In addition, while in the safe standby mode, a patient connection status is monitored, and a ventilation mode is entered automatically if the ventilator determines that a patient is connected to the ventilator while the ventilator is in the safe standby mode.

1. A method for ventilating a patient with a ventilator, the method comprising: receiving a standby mode selection;receiving a standby mode confirmation;detecting, by the ventilator, that a patient is disconnected from the ventilator; andbased on the receipt of the standby mode selection, the receipt of the standby mode confirmation, and the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator, entering a standby mode of operation, wherein entering the standby mode of operation includes: disabling at least one patient disconnect alarm;discontinuing normal ventilation of the patient; andcontinuously monitoring for reconnection of the patient to the ventilator. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: supplying a gas at a rate less than a rate for normal ventilation. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising: in response to receiving the standby mode selection, providing, by the ventilator, a prompt to input the standby mode confirmation. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein after entering the standby mode of operation, the method further comprises: detecting, by the ventilator, that the patient has been reconnected to the ventilator; andbased on the detection that the patient has been reconnected to the ventilator, automatically resuming normal ventilation. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising: storing ventilator settings used for normal ventilation; andautomatically resuming normal ventilation based on the stored ventilator settings. 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising: starting a timer, wherein the timer counts down for a period of time after receipt of the standby mode confirmation until one of: the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and an expiration of the timer. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein entering the standby mode of operation further comprises: determining that the receipt of the standby mode confirmation and the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator occur prior to the expiration of the timer. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising: when the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and the receipt of the confirmation of the standby mode selection did not occur within the predetermined time period, continuing normal ventilation. 9. A method for ventilating a patient with a ventilator, the method comprising: detecting, by the ventilator, that a patient is disconnected from the ventilator;entering a disconnect mode;receiving a selection to enter a standby mode; andentering the standby mode, wherein entering the standby mode includes: disabling at least one patient disconnect alarm;discontinuing normal ventilation of the patient; andcontinuously monitoring for reconnection of the patient to the ventilator. 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising: supplying a gas at a rate less than a rate for normal ventilation. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein after entering the standby mode, the method further comprises: detecting, by the ventilator, that the patient has been reconnected to the ventilator; andbased on the detection that the patient has been reconnected to the ventilator, automatically resuming normal ventilation. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising: storing ventilator settings used for normal ventilation; andautomatically resuming normal ventilation based on the stored ventilator settings. 13. The method of claim 9, further comprising: when the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and the receipt of the confirmation of the standby mode selection did not occur within the predetermined time period, continuing normal ventilation. 14. A ventilation system, comprising: a user interface interconnected to a controller, the user interface adapted to receive: a selection of a standby mode, anda confirmation of the standby mode selection;a breathing gas supply interconnected to and operated in response to instructions from the controller; andthe controller interconnected to the user interface and the breathing gas supply, the controller adapted to: determine whether the selection of the standby mode and the confirmation of the standby mode selection were received by the user interface;detect that a patient is disconnected from the ventilator;when the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and the receipt of the confirmation of the standby mode selection occurred within a predetermined time period, enter a standby mode;in response to entering the standby mode, the controller adapted to: disable at least one patient disconnect alarm;discontinue normal ventilation of the patient; andcontinuously monitor for reconnection of the patient to the ventilator. 15. The ventilation system of claim 14, wherein the controller is further adapted to: when the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and the receipt of the confirmation of the standby mode selection did not occur within the predetermined time period, continue normal ventilation. 16. The ventilation system of claim 14, wherein the controller is further adapted to: determine, while in the standby mode, that the patient is connected to the ventilator; andbased on the determination, automatically resume normal ventilation. 17. The ventilation system of claim 16, wherein the controller is further adapted to: store ventilation settings used for normal ventilation; andautomatically resume ventilation based on the stored ventilation settings. 18. The ventilation system of claim 14, wherein the controller is further adapted to: determine that the selection of the standby mode has not been received by the user interface; andbased on the detection that the patient is disconnected from the ventilator and the determination that the selection of the standby mode has not been received, entering a disconnect mode.
