An extraction fan has a housing mounted in a wall with an outlet duct extending through the wall to an outlet opening outside the wall. A damper flap is mounted on the fan suspended by a hinge at an upper edge so as to extend in a closed position across the opening and is movable to an open position under forward air flow from the fan, and tightly closes against a resilient deformable seal when the fan is shut off. A spring biasing cam applies inwards force to the damper flap to bias the damper flap into the closed position, and an outwards force also to bias the damper flap into the fully open position. The mounting plate includes a hood having a top wall extending over the top of the damper flap and a down-turned front flange extending parallel to the damper flap to a bottom edge.

A method for controlling air flow of a fan in a fan housing comprising; arranging the fan housing having the fan in the housing to direct air through an opening of the fan housing;mounting the housing in a location where it is exposed to exterior wind forces;providing a damper flap on the fan housing at the opening;generating a closing spring biasing force biasing the damper flap such that when the fan is not running, the closing spring biasing force causes the damper to move to a closed position to close the opening to prevent a backdraft through the housing;when the fan is running at high speed, allowing the damper flap to move from the closed position to a fully open position to allow full air flow from the fan to pass through the opening;when the fan is running at a low speed and generating low speed forward air flow;extending a member to an abutting position, the member supporting/abutting the damper flap in a partially open position;said member abutting the damper flap in said partially open position against said closing spring biasing force and against wind forces in a rearward direction opposite to the forward direction, when the wind forces overcome the low speed forward air flow from the fan operating at said low speed with a net effect biasing the damper flap to the closed position; andwhen the fan is not running, releasing the member from abutting the damper flap to allow the damper flap to move to said closed position. 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the damper flap is suspended by a hinge at an upper edge and pivotal about the upper edge. 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein there is provided a resilient deformable seal between the outer peripheral portion of the damper flap and the flange arranged to seal the damper flap to prevent reverse flow of air through the fan housing when the fan is not running. 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the member is moved from the abutting position in dependence of switching off of the fan. 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein an additional a force to the closing spring biasing force is applied at the closed position to apply an increased force greater than the closing spring biasing force on the damper flap in a direction to hold the damper flap closed at the closed position. 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the additional force is applied in dependence on switching off of the fan. 7. A method for controlling air flow of a fan in a fan housing comprising; arranging the fan in the fan housing and running the fan to direct air in a forward airflow through an opening of the fan housing;mounting the housing in a location where it is exposed to exterior wind forces;providing a damper flap on the fan housing at the opening;causing the damper flap to move to a fully closed position to close the opening to prevent a backdraft through the housing when the fan is not running;causing the damper flap to move from the fully closed position to a fully open position to allow full air flow from the fan to pass through the opening when the fan is running at high speed;the damper flap being movable from the fully closed position through an intermediate position to the fully open position; andproviding a spring biasing arrangement for applying forces to the damper flapsuch that when the damper is in between the intermediate position and the closed position, the spring biasing arrangement is arranged to act on the damper flap to provide a first biasing force to bias the damper flap from the intermediate position into the closed position;the spring biasing arrangement providing said first biasing force from the intermediate position fully into the closed position;the spring biasing arrangement providing said first biasing force in a manner which allows the damper flap to move against the first biasing force from the closed position to the intermediate position in the event that the fan is running to generate said forward airflow;such that when the damper is in between the intermediate position and the fully open position, the spring biasing arrangement is arranged to act on the damper flap to provide a second biasing force to bias the damper flap from the intermediate position into the fully open position;the spring biasing arrangement providing said second biasing force in a manner which allows the damper flap to move against the second biasing force from the fully open position to the intermediate position in the event that the fan is not running. 8. The method according to claim 7, including suspending the damper flap by a hinge at an upper edge and pivotal about the upper edge. 9. The method according to claim 7, including providing a resilient deformable seal between an outer peripheral portion of the damper flap and a flange arranged to seal the damper flap to prevent reverse flow of air through the fan housing when the fan is not running. 10. The method according to claim 7 wherein an additional force to the first spring biasing force is applied to the damper flap in the closed position to apply an increased force greater than the first biasing force on the damper flap in a direction to hold the damper flap closed at the closed position. 11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the additional force is applied in dependence on switching off of the fan. 12. A method for controlling air flow of a fan in a fan housing comprising; arranging the fan in the fan housing to direct air through an opening of the fan housing;mounting the housing in a location where it is exposed to exterior wind forces;providing a damper flap on the fan housing at the opening;causing the damper flap to move to a closed position to close the opening to prevent a backdraft through the housing when the fan is not running;causing the damper flap to move from the closed position to a fully open position to allow full air flow from the fan to pass through the opening when the fan is running at high speed;the damper flap being movable from the closed position through an intermediate position to the fully open position; andproviding a spring biasing arrangement for applying force to the damper flap;providing a first biasing force to bias the damper flap into the closed position by the spring biasing arrangement, the spring biasing arrangement including a first spring biasing component arranged to act on the damper flap when the damper is in between the intermediate position and the closed position;the first spring biasing component providing said first biasing force from the intermediate position fully into the closed position;providing a second biasing force to bias the damper flap into the fully open position by the spring biasing arrangement, the spring biasing arrangement including a second spring biasing component arranged to act on the damper flap when the damper is in between the intermediate position and the fully open position; andindependently adjusting the first and second spring biasing components for independently adjusting the first and second biasing forces. 13. The method according to claim 12, including suspending the damper flap by a hinge at an upper edge and pivotal about the upper edge. 14. The method according to claim 12, including providing a resilient deformable seal between an outer peripheral portion of the damper flap and a flange arranged to seal the damper flap to prevent reverse flow of air through the fan housing when the fan is not running. 15. The method according to claim 12 wherein an additional force to the first spring biasing force is applied to the damper flap in the closed position to apply an increased force greater than the first biasing force on the damper flap in a direction to hold the damper flap closed at the closed position. 16. The method according to claim 14 wherein the additional force is applied in dependence on switching off of the fan.
