The drive system has a high-torque, low speed permanent magnet motor having a motor casing, a stator and a rotatable shaft, wherein the rotatable shaft is configured for connection to the fan hub. The drive system includes a variable frequency drive device to generate electrical signals that effect rotation of the rotatable shaft of the motor in order to rotate the fan.

The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 wherein the motor comprises a permanent magnet motor. 3. The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 wherein the device comprises a variable frequency drive device. 4. The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 further comprising sensors to measure heat of the stator and the bearings and output signals representing the measured heat, wherein the computer receives and processes the output signals representing the measured heat. 5. The wet cooling tower according to claim 4 further comprising an airflow sensor to measure airflow produced by rotation of the fan and output signals representing the measured airflow, wherein the computer receives and processes the output signals representing the measured airflow. 6. The wet cooling tower according to claim 5 further comprising a display device in data signal communication with the computer that enables a user or operator to visually monitor the signals outputted by the heat, vibration and airflow sensors. 7. The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 wherein the fan comprises a fan hub and the rotatable shaft of the motor is connected to the fan hub. 8. The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 wherein the motor comprises a permanent magnet motor and the rotatable shaft is oriented in a substantially vertical position. 9. The wet cooling tower according to claim 8 wherein the fan is positioned above the permanent magnet motor. 10. The wet cooling tower according to claim 1 wherein the motor comprises a permanent magnet motor that is configured to have a speed range of 0-250 RPM. 11. A wet cooling tower for cooling liquid used in a process, comprising: a cooling tower structure;a motor supported by the cooling tower structure and comprising a rotatable shaft, a stator and bearings that locate and support the rotatable shaft;a fan connected to the rotatable shaft of the motor such that rotation of the rotatable shaft causes rotation of the fan;a sensor to measure vibrations of the bearings and output signals representing the measured vibrations;a variable motor-speed control device to generate electrical signals that cause rotation of the rotatable shaft of the motor at a predetermined rotational speed in order to rotate the fan, the variable motor-speed control device having an input for receiving control signals representing the predetermined rotational speed;an airflow sensor to measure airflow produced by rotation of the fan and output signals representing the measured airflow; anda computer external to the motor for processing the signals representing the measured vibrations and airflow and in response, generating the control signals for input into the variable motor-speed control device. 12. The wet cooling tower according to claim 11 further comprising sensors to measure heat of the stator and the bearings and output signals representing the measured heat, wherein the computer receives and processes the output signals representing the measured heat. 13. A wet cooling tower for cooling water used in an industrial process, comprising: a fan deck (12);a fan cylinder (10) positioned on the fan deck (12);a fan (27) located within the fan cylinder (10) and which comprises a hub (28) and a plurality of fan blades (30) that are attached to the fan hub (28);a fan-drive system for rotating the fan (27), the fan-drive system comprising a variable speed motor (52) positioned beneath the fan hub (28) and having a rotatable shaft (56) directly coupled to the fan hub (28), a stator (94) and a plurality of sealed bearings (90, 92);a variable frequency drive device (50) to generate electrical signals that effect rotation of the rotatable shaft (56) of the variable speed motor (52) in order to rotate the fan (27), wherein the variable frequency drive device (50) is configured to control the speed, direction and torque of the variable speed motor (52) and wherein the variable frequency drive device (50) is configured to receive control signals that represent a desired motor rotational speed, and in response, generate electrical signals for input into the variable speed motor (52) to cause the variable speed motor (52) to operate at a motor rotational speed that is substantially the same as the desired motor rotational speed, wherein the variable frequency drive device (50) comprises a variable frequency controller that has an input for receiving AC power and is configured to convert the AC power into electrical signals that control the speed of the variable speed motor (52);a basin for collecting water;heat and vibration sensors (200, 202) in proximity to the bearings (90, 92) for measuring heat and vibrations of the bearings and outputting signals representing the measured heat and vibrations;a temperature sensor (204) on stator (94) for measuring heat of the stator (94) and outputting signals representing the measured heat;an airflow sensor (206) positioned downstream of the airflow of the cooling tower fan (27) to measure airflow and output signals representing the measured airflow;a temperature sensor (208) located in the basin for outputting a signal representing the temperature of the water in the basin; anda computer (300) external to the variable speed motor (52) and in electronic signal communication with the variable frequency drive device (50), wherein the computer (300) processes the signals representing (i) the measured heat of the motor stator and bearings, (ii) the measured vibrations of the motor bearings, (iii) the measured temperature of the liquid in the basin and (iv) the measured airflow and, in response, generates the control signals for input into the variable frequency drive device (50) in order to adjust the speed of the variable speed motor (52) in response to the processed signals, wherein the computer (300) further comprises a display screen device (302) that enables a user or operator to visually monitor the signals outputted by the heat, temperature, vibration and airflow sensors, and a user interface that allows a user or operator to input commands.
