A method for monitoring inventory on a shelf and apparatus for accomplishing the same. The invention describes a method for determining the number of packages on a shelf or hanger. The number of packages on a shelf or hanger are determined by detecting the presence of a package on the shelf and adding all detections together to determine the number of product on a shelf. In another embodiment, the product is identified by an identifying device such as an SKU reader. Thus, the quantity and type of product located on a shelf or hanger is known. Such information allows a store to know the type and quantity of packages needed to restock a specific shelf.

An automated system of monitoring and managing inventory, the system including a warehouse and product outlets, each outlet having a detector-equipped shelf, the system comprising: automatically detecting data about packaged products on the detector-equipped shelf in a product outlet in real time, the detected data comprising a quantity of packaged products on the shelf and product identity;electronically relaying the detected data via an electronic network in real time;processing the relayed data in real time to determine product restocking needs, including identity of product and quantity of identified packaged products, to restock a detector-equipped shelf; andrestocking the automated detector-equipped shelf. 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising manufacturing the required quantity of packaged products of the identified product needed for restocking. 3. The system of claim 1, further comprising triangulating the detected data about the packaged products. 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the step of processing includes using data comprising triangulated data to determine whether to manufacture an identified product and in the quantity to manufacture. 5. The system of claim 3, further comprising using the detected data about product identity to determine a shelf age of the product. 6. The system of claim 1, further comprising tracking a location of a detector-equipped shelf within a product outlet. 7. The system of claim 6, further comprising using the detected data about product identity to determine a shelf age of the product. 8. The system of claim 6, further comprising using detected data to determine consumer preferences. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector-equipped shelf includes a single detector for both identifying product type and for detecting a quantity of packaged products of each identified product. 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector-equipped shelf uses a detector for identifying product type and another detector for detecting a quantity of packaged products of each identified product. 11. The system of claim 1, further comprising using detected data to determine an allocation of shelf space between product types. 12. The system of claim 1, wherein the product outlets comprise a retail store. 13. The system of claim 1 wherein the step of automatically detecting comprises utilizing a plurality of detectors to each detect a quantity of product packages, and summing the detected quantity of product packages from each of the detectors. 14. The system of claim 13, further comprising triangulating the detected data about the packaged products and tracking a location of a detector-equipped shelf within a product outlet. 15. The system of claim 1, wherein the product outlets comprise a manufacturing facility. 16. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector-equipped shelf comprises a self-adjusting shelf. 17. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector-equipped shelf comprises a multiplicity of different identified products on the shelf. 18. An automated system of monitoring and managing inventory, the system including a product manufacturing facility, a warehouse, and product outlets, the outlets each having a detector-equipped shelf, the system comprising: using the detector-equipped shelf at a product outlet to automatically detect data about packaged products on the shelf in real time, the data including data about quantity of packaged products on the shelf and identity of each of the products;electronically relaying the detected data about the packaged products via an electronic network in real time;processing the data about the identified packaged products in real time to continuously update a required quantity of identified packaged products needed to restock a detector-equipped shelf;using data comprising processed data to schedule manufacture of identified products and the quantity of each type of product; andrestocking the automated detector-equipped shelves. 19. The system of claim 18, further comprising triangulating the data about the packaged products. 20. The system of claim 19, wherein the step of processing data includes processing data comprising triangulated data. 21. The system of claim 18, further comprising using the detected data about product quantity and product identity to determine a shelf age of the product. 22. The system of claim 18, further comprising tracking a location of a detector-equipped shelf within a product outlet. 23. The system of claim 18, wherein the detector-equipped shelf includes a single detector for both identifying products and for detecting a quantity of each identified packaged product. 24. The system of claim 18, wherein the detector-equipped shelf uses a detector for identifying product and another detector for detecting a quantity of each identified packaged product. 25. The system of claim 18, further comprising tracking a location of a detector-equipped shelf within a product outlet; and wherein the step of processing further comprises determining a shelf-age of an identified product. 26. An automated system of monitoring and managing inventory, the system including a product manufacturing facility, a warehouse and retail product outlets, the retail outlets each having a detector-equipped shelf, the system comprising: using the detector-equipped shelf to automatically detect data about packaged products on the shelf in real time, the data including data about quantity of packaged products on the shelf, type of products and shelf-age by type of product;optionally triangulating the detected data in real time;electronically relaying the detected data about the packaged products via an electronic network in real time at least whenever a packaged product is removed from the shelf;processing relayed data about the packaged products in real time to determine a required quantity of packages of an identified product needed to restock an automated detector-equipped shelf;optionally tracking a location of a detector-equipped shelf within the retail product outlets;optionally using processed data to determine consumer preferences by product type;optionally re-allocating shelf space based on consumer preferences;optionally using processed data in scheduling manufacture of types of products and the quantity of each type of product; andrestocking the automated detector-equipped shelves.
