The first jaw assembly defines slots and the second jaw assembly defines pockets. One or both of the first and second jaw assemblies define recesses. The fasteners are disposed in the slots of the first jaw assembly and are formed by the pockets of the second jaw assembly. The one or more surgical buttresses have a body that includes plugs that are integrally formed with the body for insertion into the recesses to secure the surgical buttress(es) to one or both of the first and second jaw assemblies. The body substantially overlies at least some of the slots of the first jaw assembly and/or at least some of the pockets of the second jaw assembly.

A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a housing;an end effector being secured to the housing and having first and second jaw assemblies, the first jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener retaining slots, the second jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener forming pockets, a knife channel, and an interior passage therein;a knife assembly supported by the housing and including a knife bar and a knife blade that is movable through at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies, the knife blade secured to a distal end of the knife bar, the knife bar including a top portion received within the interior passage of the second jaw assembly as the knife blade travels through the knife channel of the second jaw assembly;a plurality of recesses defined in at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies, wherein the plurality of recesses are disposed around a perimeter of at least one of the plurality of fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and the plurality of fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly;a plurality of fasteners disposed in the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and configured and dimensioned to be formed by the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andat least one surgical buttress having a body including a plurality of plugs extending therefrom, the body overlying at least one of:at least some of the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly; andat least some of the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andthe plugs of each surgical buttress being integrally formed with the body thereof and being relatively positioned on the body wherein the plugs are solely disposed within the plurality of recesses of at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies for securing the at least one surgical buttress to at least one of the first jaw assembly and the second jaw assembly, a portion of each of the plugs of the plurality of plugs extending into the interior passage of the second jaw assembly to facilitate the securement of the at least one surgical buttress to the second jaw assembly, the top portion of the knife bar mechanically disrupting the portion of each of the plugs that extends into the interior passage of the second jaw assembly to facilitate a release of the at least one surgical buttress from the second jaw assembly as the top portion of the knife bar travels through the interior passage of the second jaw assembly. 2. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one surgical buttress is formed of a non-woven material. 3. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the plurality of plugs is made from a material selected from the group comprising polyglytone 6211, glycolide, caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate, lactide and combinations thereof. 4. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the plurality of plugs are one of overmolded and deposited onto the at least one surgical buttress. 5. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first jaw assembly supports a cartridge defining the fastener retaining slots, the at least one surgical buttress being supported on a tissue contacting surface of the cartridge, the cartridge supporting at least one pusher therein, wherein each of the plurality of plugs is configured and dimensioned such that when the plurality of plugs is positioned within the plurality of recesses, displacement of the at least one pusher results in displacement of at least one of the plurality of plugs from within the at least one recess of the plurality of recesses to facilitate the release of the at least one surgical buttress from the cartridge upon a firing of the stapling apparatus. 6. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of plugs is formed of a degradable polymer capable of mechanically interlocking within at least one of the plurality of recesses when exposed to heat and pressure to secure the at least one surgical buttress to at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies. 7. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the plurality of plugs are formed of a first material and the at least one surgical buttress is formed of a second material, the first material having a melting temperature below that of the second material. 8. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 7, wherein the first material has a melting temperature of between about 120 degrees Celsius and about 150 degrees Celsius and the second material has a melting temperature of between about 180 degrees Celsius to about 225 degrees Celsius. 9. An end effector for a surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a first jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener retaining slots and a second jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener forming pockets, the second jaw assembly defining an interior passage and a knife channel that is in communication with the interior passage, the knife channel configured to receive a knife blade therethrough, the interior passage extending over the plurality of fastener forming pockets;a plurality of recesses defined in at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies, wherein the plurality of recesses are disposed around a perimeter of at least one of the plurality of fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and the plurality of fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly;a plurality of fasteners disposed in the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and configured and dimensioned to be formed by the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andat least one surgical buttress having a body including a plurality of plugs extending therefrom, the body overlying at least one of:at least some of the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly; andat least some of the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andthe plugs of each surgical buttress being integrally formed with the body thereof and being relatively positioned on the body wherein the plugs are solely disposed within the plurality of recesses of at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies for securing the at least one surgical buttress to at least one of the first jaw assembly and the second jaw assembly, wherein a portion of each of the plugs of the plurality of plugs extends through a respective one of the plurality of recesses and into the interior passage of the second jaw assembly to facilitate the securement of the at least one surgical buttress to the second jaw assembly. 10. The end effector of claim 9, wherein the plurality of plugs is made from a material selected from the group comprising polyglytone 6211, glycolide, caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate, lactide and combinations thereof. 11. The end effector of claim 9, wherein the plurality of plugs are one of overmolded and deposited onto the at least one surgical buttress. 12. The end effector of claim 9, wherein the first jaw assembly supports a cartridge defining the fastener retaining slots, the at least one surgical buttress being supported on a tissue contacting surface of the cartridge, the cartridge supporting at least one pusher therein, wherein the each of the plurality of plugs is configured and dimensioned such that when the plurality of plugs is positioned within the plurality of recesses, displacement of the at least one pusher results in displacement of at least one of the plurality of plugs from within the at least one recess of the plurality of recesses to facilitate the release of the at least one surgical buttress from the cartridge upon a firing of the stapling apparatus. 13. The end effector of claim 9, wherein at least one of the plurality of plugs is formed of a degradable polymer capable of mechanically interlocking within at least one of the plurality of recesses when exposed to heat and pressure to secure the at least one surgical buttress to at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies. 14. The end effector of claim 9, wherein the plurality of plugs are formed of a first material and the at least one surgical buttress is formed of a second material, the first material having a melting temperature below that of the second material. 15. The end effector of claim 14, wherein the first material has a melting temperature of between about 120 degrees Celsius and about 150 degrees Celsius and the second material has a melting temperature of between about 180 degrees Celsius to about 225 degrees Celsius. 16. An end effector for a surgical stapling apparatus, the end effector comprising: a first jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener retaining slots and a second jaw assembly defining a plurality of fastener forming pockets, the second jaw assembly defining an interior passage extending over the plurality of fastener forming pockets and a knife channel configured to receive a knife blade therethrough;a plurality of recesses defined in at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies separate from the knife channel, wherein the plurality of recesses are disposed around a perimeter of at least one of the plurality of fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and the plurality of fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly;a plurality of fasteners disposed in the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly and configured and dimensioned to be formed by respective ones of the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andat least one surgical buttress having a body including a plurality of plugs extending therefrom, the body overlying at least one of:at least some of the fastener retaining slots of the first jaw assembly; andat least some of the fastener forming pockets of the second jaw assembly; andthe plugs of each surgical buttress being integrally formed with the body thereof and being relatively positioned on the body wherein the plugs are solely disposed within the plurality of recesses of at least one of the first and second jaw assemblies for securing the at least one surgical buttress to at least one of the first jaw assembly and the second jaw assembly, wherein a portion of each of the plugs of the plurality of plugs extends through a respective one of the plurality of recesses and into the interior passage of the second jaw assembly.
