In various embodiments, a surgical stapler is disclosed. The stapler comprises a handle, a shaft, and a surgical end effector extending from the shaft. The stapler further comprises a firing member configured to move through a plurality of positions during a firing stroke, an electric motor configured to drive the firing member during the firing stroke, and a control system for controlling the electric motor. The control system comprises a battery and a pulse frequency modulation circuit configured to control the frequency of pulses supplied from the battery to the electric motor, wherein the pulse frequency modulation circuit is configured to optimize the speed applied to the firing member.

A surgical instrument for cutting and stapling tissue, wherein the surgical instrument comprises: a handle comprising: an electric motor; anda control system for controlling said electric motor, said control system comprising: a battery operably coupleable to said electric motor, said battery configured to supply pulses to said electric motor; anda pulse width modulation circuit operably coupleable to said battery, said pulse width modulation circuit configured to control the duration of pulses supplied from said battery to said electric motor;a shaft extending from said handle; andan end effector extending from said shaft, said end effector comprising: a replaceable staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples for stapling tissue;a cutting element for cutting tissue, wherein said cutting element is configured to move at least partially through said end effector during a firing stroke to deploy said staples, wherein said electric motor is configured to drive said cutting element with an applied power during the firing stroke at a firing speed, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to reduce the speed of said cutting element to below the firing speed at various times during the firing stroke, and wherein the applied power applied to said cutting element is optimized by said pulse width modulation circuit;a proximal end;a cartridge lockout mechanism positioned in a lockout region of said end effector, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to modulate the speed of said cutting element below the firing speed as said cutting element travels within said lockout region; anda distal end, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to modulate the speed of said cutting element below the firing speed as said cutting element approaches said distal end. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said cutting element is configured to move between a plurality of positions during the firing stroke, the plurality of positions comprising: an initial range of positions;a pre-reversing range of positions; anda pre-stopping range of positions;wherein said pulse width modulation circuit reduces the duration of pulses during at least one of the initial range of positions, pre-reversing range of positions, or pre-stopping range of positions. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit reduces the applied power applied to said cutting element during at least one of the initial range of positions, pre-reversing range of positions, or pre-stopping range of positions. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the duration of pulses varies during the firing stroke. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the applied power applied to said cutting element varies during the firing stroke. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said end effector further comprises a cutting element position sensor configured to detect a plurality of positions of said cutting element, said pulse width modulation circuit of said control system configured to control said electric motor based on the detected positions of said cutting element. 7. A surgical stapler, comprising: a handle;a shaft extending from said handle;a surgical end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said surgical end effector comprises a replaceable staple cartridge;a firing member configured to move through a plurality of positions during a firing stroke;an electric motor configured to drive said firing member with a speed during the firing stroke;a control system for controlling said electric motor, said control system comprising: a battery operably engageable with said electric motor, said battery configured to supply pulses to said electric motor; anda pulse width modulation circuit operably engageable with said battery, said pulse width modulation circuit configured to control the duration of pulses supplied from said battery to said electric motor, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to optimize the speed applied to said firing member from said electric motor;wherein said firing member is configured to move at least partially through said surgical end effector during the firing stroke at a firing speed, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to reduce the speed of said firing member to below the firing speed at various times during the firing stroke, and wherein said surgical end effector further comprises: a proximal end;a cartridge lockout mechanism positioned in a lockout region, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to modulate the speed of said firing member below the firing speed as said firing member travels within said lockout region; anda distal end, wherein said pulse width modulation circuit is configured to modulate the speed of said firing member below the firing speed as said firing member approaches said distal end. 8. The surgical stapler of claim 7, wherein the plurality of positions comprises: an initial range of positions;a pre-reversing range of positions; anda pre-stopping range of positions;wherein said pulse width modulation circuit reduces the duration of pulses during at least one of the initial range of positions, pre-reversing range of positions, or pre-stopping range of positions. 9. The surgical stapler of claim 8, wherein the said pulse width modulation circuit reduces the speed applied to said firing member during at least one of the initial range of positions, pre-reversing range of positions, or pre-stopping range of positions. 10. The surgical stapler of claim 7, wherein the duration of pulses varies during the firing stroke. 11. The surgical stapler of claim 7, wherein the speed applied to said firing member varies during the firing stroke. 12. The surgical stapler of claim 7, further comprising a firing member position sensor configured to detect a plurality of positions of said firing member, said pulse width modulation circuit of said control system configured to control said electric motor based on the detected positions of said firing member. 13. The surgical stapler of claim 7, wherein said firing member further comprises a cutting element configured to translate in said surgical end effector. 14. A surgical stapler, comprising: a handle;a shaft extending from said handle;a surgical end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said surgical end effector comprises a replaceable staple cartridge;a firing member configured to move through a plurality of positions during a firing stroke;an electric motor configured to drive said firing member during the firing stroke;a control system for controlling said electric motor, said control system comprising: a battery operably engageable with said electric motor, said battery configured to supply pulses to said electric motor;a pulse frequency modulation circuit operably engageable with said battery, said pulse frequency modulation circuit configured to control the frequency of pulses supplied from said battery to said electric motor, wherein said pulse frequency modulation circuit is configured to optimize the speed applied to said firing member from said electric motor;wherein said firing member is configured to move at least partially through said surgical end effector during the firing stroke at a firing speed, wherein said pulse frequency modulation circuit is configured to reduce the speed of said firing member to below the firing speed at various times during the firing stroke, and wherein said surgical end effector further comprises: a proximal end; anda distal end, wherein said pulse frequency modulation circuit is configured to modulate the speed of said firing member below the firing speed as said firing member approaches said distal end. 15. The surgical stapler of claim 14, further comprising a firing member position sensor configured to detect a plurality of positions of said firing member, said pulse frequency modulation circuit of said control system configured to control said electric motor based on the detected positions of said firing member. 17. The surgical stapler of claim 14, wherein said firing member further comprises a cutting element configured to translate in said surgical end effector.
