A method of identifying an egress port of a focus device, the method being implemented at a monitor computer and comprising: generating a query message to the focus device including an address identifying the device and a query key formulated based on a destination identifier, and including an instruction readable at the device to return the result message including identification of an egress port for messages addressed to the destination identified in the destination identifier; receiving a result message at the monitor computer; reading the result message, and where the result message does not identify an egress port autonomously generating a subsequent query message; including at least one of (i) a different address for a different device connected in the computer network, and (ii) a different query key, wherein sufficient query messages are generated to identify the egress port of the focus device.

1. A computer implemented method of identifying an egress port of a focus device connected in a computer network, the method being implemented at a monitor computer connected to the network and comprising: generating a query message to the focus device, the query message including a device address identifying the focus device and a first query key formulated based on a destination identifier, and including an instruction readable at the focus device to cause the focus device to return a result message identifying the egress port, if any egress port is identifiable in response to the query message, for messages addressed to a destination identified in the destination identifier when the query message is received at the focus device;receiving the result message at the monitor computer;reading the result message; andwhere the result message does not identify any egress port, autonomously generating at least one subsequent query message selected by the monitor computer, wherein the at least one subsequent query message includes the device address identifying the same focus device, a different query key, and instructions readable at the focus device to cause the focus device to return a subsequent result message identifying the egress port, if any egress port is identifiable in response to the subsequent query message, wherein the method further comprises generating multiple subsequent query messages until a subsequent result message identifies the egress port of the focus device. 2. A method according to claim 1, which is implemented by executing an egress port identification utility in the form of a computer program. 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the different query key is formulated based on the same destination identifier, for accessing a different forwarding table at the focus device. 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the different query key is formulated based a different destination identifier, for accessing the focus device. 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the focus device is a routing device, and the query message is directed to a routing table of the routing device, the result message containing an indication that the route type to the destination identifier is indirect, wherein the step of reading the result message comprises detecting the indirect type and generating a subsequent query message with the different query key formulated based on a different destination identifier. 6. A method according to claim 4, wherein the result message contains a routing address for a next hop from the focus device in the computer network, and wherein the subsequent query message is formulated based on the next hop address as the different destination identifier. 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein at least one further subsequent query message includes a different device address identifying a different device, with the first query key. 8. A method according to claim 6, wherein the subsequent query message is directed into a mapping table at the focus device identified by the device address, the mapping table mapping destination identifiers according to a routing address protocol to destination identifiers according to a switching address protocol. 9. A method according to claim 1, wherein the destination identifier in the query message is according to a routing address protocol, and wherein the different query key is formulated based on a different destination identifier which is according to a switching address protocol. 10. A method according to claim 8, further comprising: ascertaining from which interface on the focus device it derived a mapping between a routing address and a switching address for a next hop address by querying of the mapping table by the at least one subsequent query message. 11. A method according to claim 1, wherein if the result message identifies an egress port, the method seeks to identify a device connected to the egress port based on a network topology. 12. A method according to claim 11, wherein if it is determined that the egress port which has been returned in the result message does not uniquely identify a connected device, the at least one subsequent query message requests higher and/or lower port associations of the focus device. 13. A computer program product comprising a computer program stored on non-transitory computer readable storage, the computer program comprising code which when executed by a computer implements the method of claim 1. 14. A computer having a network interface for connecting the computer to a network including at least one focus device; and a processor arranged to execute a computer program to implement the method of claim 1.
