A unitary sheet-like merchandise labeling article that has a labeling tag flatly conjoined along a unifying flat bond zone with a flexible elastic layer that extends away from the tag and includes an elastic fastening loop. The loop sides that define the loop are wider than the thickness of the elastic layer. Further, the flexible elastic layer that extends away from the tag has a thickness greater than the thickness of the tag and has a dispersion zone adjacent the unifying flat bond zone. The dispersion zone allows dissipation of elastic loop in-line stretching forces sufficiently to reduce transmission of such forces into the bond zone.

1. A labeling article, comprising: an opening circumscribed by an elastic sheet;a tag in the form of a sheet, wherein the tag is bonded to the elastic sheet;wherein the elastic sheet is configured to form a loop around the opening; andwherein the tag is spaced from the opening by a section of the elastic sheet and is bonded to the elastic sheet only in the area of a bond zone, wherein a size of the bond zone is defined by an overlap of the tag on the elastic sheet. 2. The article of claim 1 having an end of the bond zone and a depth of the bond zone; wherein the end of the bond zone is defined by an end of the elastic sheet, andwherein the depth of the bond zone is defined by an overlap of the tag on the elastic sheet, and extends from the end of the sheet onto the sheet for a distance of about ¼ inch to about ½ inch. 3. The article of claim 1 wherein a circumference of the opening defines an inner circumference of the loop; and wherein, when the loop is in a maximally stretched condition, the inner circumference is at least three times greater than when the loop is in an unstretched condition. 4. The article of claim 1 wherein a circumference of the opening defines an inner circumference of the loop, wherein the loop is movable between an original state and a stretched state upon application of at least one force directed outwardly from the opening in the plane of the loop,wherein the inner circumference of the loop in the stretched state is at least three times greater than the inner circumference of the loop in the original state,wherein the loop is movable between the stretched state and a relaxed state upon removal of the at least one force after no more than three seconds of continuous application,wherein a movement from the stretched state to the relaxed state takes no more than three seconds, andwherein the inner circumference of the loop in the relaxed state is no more than 5% greater than the inner circumference of the loop in the original state. 5. The article of claim 1 wherein a size of the bond zone is defined by an overlap of the tag on the elastic sheet; and wherein the section comprises a dispersion zone sufficiently large to reduce the transmission of stretching forces into the bond zone. 6. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag is bonded to the elastic sheet by fusion bonding. 7. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag is bonded to the elastic sheet by interposition of an intermediate bonding material between the tag and the sheet. 8. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag is bonded to the elastic sheet by a bond, wherein the bond is formed to withstand at least a pulling force of at least two pounds for a duration of at least 10 seconds. 9. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag comprises at least one thermoplastic material. 10. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag comprises high-impact polystyrene (HIPS). 11. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag comprises polystyrene and a styrene-butadiene-styrene modifier of up to about 40 percent of the weight of the polystyrene. 12. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag has a corona-treated surface. 13. The article of claim 1 wherein the tag carries water-resistant printing. 14. A labeling article comprising: an opening circumscribed by and elastic sheet;a tag in the form of a sheet, wherein the tag is bonded to the elastic sheet;wherein the elastic sheet is configured to form a loop around the opening;wherein the tag is spaced from the opening by a section of the elastic sheet and is bonded to the elastic sheet only in the area of a bond zone;wherein the section and the bond zone are formed of at least a first elastomer and the loop is formed of at least a second elastomer; andwherein the first elastomer and the second elastomer are configured to blend into a reliable unity at an interface.
