A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant an orthopaedic hip prosthesis, comprising: a version-replicating instrument comprising an elongated shaft having (i) an alignment key formed in a distal end thereof, the alignment key having a longitudinal axis, and (ii) an alignment slot formed in an opposite, proximal end thereof, the alignment slot having a longitudinal axis that lies on the same imaginary line as the longitudinal axis of the alignment key, anda proximal trial instrument including: a first component having an alignment key formed in an outer surface thereof, the first component having a longitudinal axis, anda second component pivotally coupled to the first component to permit the second component to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the first component, the second component including a neck configured to receive a femoral head trial,wherein (i) a hole is defined in the proximal end of the elongated shaft that extends in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axes of the alignment slot and the alignment key, and (ii) the alignment slot extends inwardly through an outer surface of the elongated shaft and opens into the hole, andwherein when the proximal trial instrument is secured to the version-replicating instrument, the alignment key of the proximal trial instrument is positioned in the alignment slot of the version-replicating instrument to align the proximal trial instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the version-replicating instrument. 2. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the alignment key comprises an elongated rib extending outwardly from the distal end of the elongated shaft. 3. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the alignment key has a lobe-shaped cross sectional shape. 4. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the hole comprises a blind hole formed in the proximal end of the elongated shaft. 5. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the alignment key of the version-replicating instrument is configured to mate with a keyway formed in a superior surface of a distal stem component so as to align the version-replicating instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the distal stem component when the version-replicating instrument is secured to the distal stem component. 6. A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant an orthopaedic hip prosthesis, the surgical instrument assembly comprising: a version-replicating instrument comprising an elongated shaft having (i) an alignment key formed in a distal end thereof, the alignment key having a longitudinal axis, and (ii) an alignment slot formed in an opposite, proximal end thereof, the alignment slot having a longitudinal axis that lies on the same imaginary line as the longitudinal axis of the alignment key, anda proximal trial instrument including: a first component having an alignment key formed in an outer surface thereof, the first component having a longitudinal axis, anda second component pivotally coupled to the first component to permit the second component to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the first component, the second component including a neck configured to receive a femoral head trial,wherein when the proximal trial instrument is secured to the version-replicating instrument, the alignment key of the proximal trial instrument is positioned in the alignment slot of the version-replicating instrument to align the proximal trial instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the version-replicating instrument. 7. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 6, wherein the alignment key of the version-replicating instrument comprises an elongated rib extending outwardly from the distal end of the elongated shaft. 8. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 6, wherein the alignment key of the version-replicating instrument has a lobe-shaped cross sectional shape. 9. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 6, wherein: the proximal end of the elongated shaft has a hole formed therein,the hole extends in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongated shaft, andthe alignment slot opens into the hole. 10. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 9, wherein the hole comprises a blind hole formed in the proximal end of the elongated shaft. 11. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 6, wherein the alignment key of the version-replicating instrument is configured to mate with a keyway formed in a superior surface of a distal stem component so as to align the version-replicating instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the distal stem component when the version-replicating instrument is secured to the distal stem component. 12. A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant an orthopaedic hip prosthesis, the surgical instrument assembly comprising: a version-replicating instrument comprising an elongated shaft having (i) an alignment key formed in a distal end thereof, the alignment key having a longitudinal axis, (ii) an alignment slot formed in an opposite, proximal end thereof, the alignment slot having a longitudinal axis that lies on a common imaginary line with the longitudinal axis of the alignment key, and (iii) a plurality of grooves formed in an outer surface of the elongated shaft and positioned between the alignment key and the alignment slot, anda proximal trial instrument including: a first component having an alignment key formed in an outer surface thereof, the first component having a longitudinal axis, anda second component pivotally coupled to the first component to permit the second component to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the first component, the second component including a neck configured to receive a femoral head trial,wherein when the proximal trial instrument is secured to the version-replicating instrument, the alignment key of the proximal trial instrument is positioned in the alignment slot of the version-replicating instrument to align the proximal trial instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the version-replicating instrument. 13. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12, wherein (i) the proximal end of the elongated shaft has a hole formed therein, (ii) the hole extends in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongated shaft, and (iii) the alignment slot extends through the outer surface of the elongated shaft in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft to open into the hole. 14. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12, wherein the alignment key comprises an elongated rib extending outwardly from the distal end of the elongated shaft. 15. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12, wherein the alignment key has a lobe-shaped cross sectional shape. 16. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12, wherein: the proximal end of the elongated shaft has a hole formed therein,the hole extends in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongated shaft, andthe alignment slot opens into the hole. 17. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 16, wherein the hole comprises a blind hole formed in the proximal end of the elongated shaft. 18. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12, wherein the alignment key of the version-replicating instrument is configured to mate with a keyway formed in a superior surface of a distal stem component so as to align the version-replicating instrument in a predetermined orientation relative to the distal stem component when the version-replicating instrument is secured to the distal stem component.
