A system for treating a tissue site of a patient includes a dressing filler adapted to be positioned at the tissue site. The dressing filler is comprised of a porous substrate having at least one compressed region and at least one expanded region. The compressed region of the porous substrate is held in a compressed state by a first coating capable of dissolving in the presence of a fluid, and the expanded region of the porous substrate is held in an expanded state by, a second coating.

1. A system for treating a tissue site, the system comprising: a dressing filler adapted to be positioned at the tissue site, the dressing filler being comprised of a porous substrate having at least one compressed region and at least one expanded region;a first coating adapted to hold the at least one compressed region away from a relaxed state and in a compressed state; anda second coating adapted to hold the at least one expanded region away from a relaxed state and in an expanded state, the first coating and the second coating adapted to dissolve when exposed to a fluid. 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a cover adapted to be positioned adjacent the dressing filler to create a sealed space beneath the cover. 3. The system of claim 2, further comprising a reduced pressure source adapted to be in fluid communication with the sealed space. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one compressed region expands upon dissolution of the first coating. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one expanded region is configured to contract upon dissolution of the second coating. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one compressed region is adapted to expand upon dissolution of the first coating and the at least one expanded region is adapted to contract upon dissolution of the second coating, and wherein the porous substrate has a volume that remains substantially constant upon dissolution of the first coating and the second coating. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the porous substrate is an open-cell, reticulated foam. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the porous substrate is a polyurethane foam. 9. The system of claim 1, the porous substrate comprising an equal number of the at least one compressed regions and the at least one expanded regions. 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the fluid is exudate from the tissue site. 11. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first coating and the second coating is a starch. 12. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first coating and the second coating is polyvinyl alcohol. 13. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first coating and the second coating is a polymer. 14. The system of claim 1, wherein the first coating is a same coating as the second coating. 15. The system of claim 1, wherein: the at least one compressed region and the at least one expanded region each comprise a plurality of pores, the pores of the at least one compressed region being smaller than the pores of the at least one expanded region. 16. The system of claim 1, wherein: the at least one compressed region is arranged as a first vertical layer extending from a wound-facing side of the porous substrate to an opposing side of the porous substrate; andthe at least one expanded region is arranged as a second vertical layer extending from the wound-facing side of the porous substrate to the opposing side of the porous substrate. 17. The system of claim 1, wherein: the at least one compressed region is arranged as a first horizontal layer and is positioned on a wound-facing side of the porous substrate; andthe at least one expanded region is arranged as a second horizontal layer and is separated from the wound-facing side of the porous substrate. 18. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the at least one compressed regions is positioned adjacent one of the at least one expanded regions, the at least one compressed region and the at least one expanded region positioned on a wound-facing surface of the porous substrate. 19. The system of claim 1, wherein the porous substrate comprises a plurality of the compressed regions and a plurality of the expanded regions, one of the compressed regions being positioned between a pair of the expanded regions and one of the expanded regions being positioned between a pair of the compressed regions, each of the compressed regions and each of the expanded regions positioned on a wound-facing surface of the porous substrate. 20. The system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of nodes positioned on a wound-facing surface of the porous substrate, the nodes adapted to be positioned adjacent the tissue site. 21. The system of claim 1, the porous substrate having a wound-facing surface, the wound-facing surface comprising: a first protrusion, the at least one expanded region positioned substantially in vertical alignment relative to the first protrusion;a first indentation, the at least one compressed region positioned substantially in vertical alignment relative to the first indentation;wherein the first protrusion is transformable to a second indentation upon dissolution of the first coating; andwherein the first indentation is transformable to a second protrusion upon dissolution of the second coating. 22. The system of claim 1, wherein the porous substrate is configured to maintain a constant volume when the expanded region moves from the expanded state to the relaxed state and when the compressed region moves from the compressed state to the relaxed state. 23. A dressing filler, comprising: a porous substrate having at least one compressed region and at least one expanded region, the compressed region held in a compressed state and away from a relaxed state by a first coating adapted to dissolve when exposed to exudate from a tissue site, the expanded region held in an expanded state and away from a relaxed state by a second coating adapted to dissolve when exposed to the exudate. 24. The dressing filler of claim 23, wherein the compressed region is adapted to expand upon dissolution of the first coating. 25. The dressing filler of claim 23, wherein the expanded region is adapted to contract upon dissolution of the second coating.
