A method comprising: providing, via a server system comprising at least one computing device, a first user interface through which users can explicitly elect to join or establish a community with at least one other user; andproviding, via the server system, a second user interface through which users can explicitly elect whether or not to expose their respective purchases to other users,wherein the server system is configured to expose purchases by at least one user that elects to have purchases exposed,wherein such exposure includes, for at least a first item purchased by the at least one user: an identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user, andan identifier associated with the at least one user that individually identifies the at least one user, wherein the exposure provides the identifier associated with the at least one user for display in association with the identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user,creating by the server system a temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members;utilizing the temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members and purchase histories of community members to generate a product-to-member mapping data structure for the community;wherein the server system is configured to use the product-to-member mapping data structure to enable one or more requested item detail pages of an electronic catalog to be dynamically customized and supplemented with purchase notification messages individually identifying one or more users that are members of a community in which a prospective purchaser is a member and that have purchased respective items corresponding to the item detail pages in accordance with user elections of the one or more users to expose their respective purchase histories to other users, and to cause the one or more customized items detail pages to be provided over a network to a prospective purchaser computing device, wherein the prospective purchaser can add an item to a shopping cart via a respective supplemented item detail page. 2. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising providing, by the server system, a first user access to purchase history information of a second user specified by the first user in accordance with a permission granted by the second user via said second user interface. 3. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: detecting, by the server system, which members of the community are currently online; andenabling a first member of the community detected to be currently online to communicate with a second member of the community detected to be online via an instant message or a private chat room. 4. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: enabling, via the server system, users in the community to submit review of items; andproviding an interface via which users in the community can access reviews provided by other members of the community. 5. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: identifying, by the server system, an implicit community of users at least partly based on a common user characteristic, wherein the common user characteristic relates to purchase history;enabling, by the server system, at least one member of the implicit community to explicitly elect, via the second user interface, to share reviews with other members of the implicit community. 6. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising providing, by the server system, to a first user that is a member of the community with a synopsis of a first item, including at least an item title, an indication as to a level of acceptance of the first item by the community, and an item detail page corresponding to the first item, at least partly in response to a transaction by a second user, wherein the second user granted permission to share transaction information of the second user via the second user interface. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the server system comprises a database of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) content, a user database, a community database, a database of product data, and specific executable code configured to cause the server system to implement the method. 8. A community interests system, comprising: a computer data repository that stores community data and purchase data, said computer data repository comprising a non-transitory storage device; anda computing system comprising one or more computing devices, said computing system programmed to: provide a first user interface through which users can explicitly elect to join or establish a community with at least one other user;provide a second user interface through which users can explicitly elect whether or not to expose their respective purchases to other users;expose purchases by at least one user that elects to have purchases exposed using purchase data from the computer data repository,wherein such exposure, for at least a first item purchased by the at least one user, includes: an identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user, andan identifier associated with the at least one user that individually identifies the at least one user, wherein the exposure provides the identifier associated with the at least one user for display in association with the identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user,create a temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members;utilize the temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members and purchase histories of community members to generate a product-to-member mapping data structure for the community;wherein the computing system is configured to use the product-to-member mapping data structure to enable one or more requested item detail pages of an electronic catalog to be dynamically customized and supplemented with purchase notification messages individually identifying one or more users that are members of a community, using data from the computer data repository, in which a prospective purchaser is a member and that have purchased respective items corresponding to the item detail pages in accordance with user elections of the one or more users to expose their respective purchase histories to other users, and to cause the one or more customized items detail pages to be provided over a network to a prospective purchaser computing device, wherein the prospective purchaser can add an item to a shopping cart via a respective supplemented item detail page. 9. The community interests system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to provide a first user access to purchase history information of a second user specified by the first user in accordance with a permission granted by the second user via said second user interface. 10. The community interests system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to enable the item detail pages to be supplemented with functionality for users to send instant messages to other users regarding specific purchases. 11. The community interests system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to enable users in the community to submit review of items and provide an interface via which users in the community can access reviews provided by other members of the community. 12. The community interests system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to: identify an implicit community of users at least partly based on a common user characteristic; andenable, via the second user interface, at least one member of the implicit community to explicitly elect to share reviews with other members of the implicit community. 13. The community interests system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to provide a first user that is a member of the community with a synopsis of a first item, including at least an item title, an indication as to a level of acceptance of the first item in the community, and an item detail page corresponding to the first item, at least partly in response to a transaction by a second user, wherein the second user granted permission to share transaction information of the second user via the second user interface. 14. A computer storage system comprising a non-transitory storage device, said computer storage system having stored thereon executable program instructions that direct a computer system to at least: provide a first user interface through which users can explicitly elect to join or establish a community with at least one other user;provide a second user interface through which users can explicitly elect whether or not to expose their respective purchases to other users;expose purchases by at least one user that elects to have purchases exposed using purchase data from a computer data repository,wherein such exposure includes, for at least a first item purchased by the at least one user: an identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user, andan identifier associated with the at least one user that individually identifies the at least one user, wherein the exposure provides the identifier associated with the at least one user for display in association with the identifier associated with the first item purchased by the at least one user;create a temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members;utilize the temporary data structure that maps a community to corresponding members and purchase histories of community members to generate a product-to-member mapping data structure for the community; anduse the product-to-member mapping data structure to enable one or more requested item detail pages of an electronic catalog to be dynamically customized and supplemented with purchase notification messages individually identifying one or more users that are members of a community in which a prospective purchaser is a member and that have purchased respective items corresponding to the item detail pages in accordance with user elections of the one or more users to expose their respective purchase histories to other users, and to cause the one or more customized items detail pages to be provided over a network to a prospective purchaser computing device, wherein the prospective purchaser can add an item to a shopping cart via a respective supplemented item detail page. 15. The computer storage system of claim 14, the executable program instructions further configured to direct the computer system to provide a first user access to purchase history information of a second user specified by the first user in accordance with a permission granted by the second user via said second user interface. 16. The computer storage system of claim 14, the executable program instructions further configured to direct the computer system to enable the item detail pages to be supplemented with functionality for users to send instant messages to other users regarding specific purchases. 17. The computer storage system of claim 14, the executable program instructions further configured to direct the computer system to enable users in the community to submit review of items and provide an interface via which users in the community can access reviews provided by other members of the community. 18. The computer storage system of claim 14, the executable program instructions further configured to direct the computer system to: identify an implicit community of users at least partly based on a common user characteristic; andenable, via the second user interface, at least one member of the implicit community at least one member to explicitly elect to share reviews with other members of the implicit community. 19. The computer storage system of claim 14, the executable program instructions further configured to direct the computer system to provide a first user that is a member of the community with a synopsis of a first item, including at least an item title, an indication as to a level of acceptance of the first item in the community, and an item detail page corresponding to the first item, at least partly in response to a transaction by a second user, wherein the second user granted permission to share transaction information of the second user via the second user interface.
