Techniques are described for incorporating distribution network analysis in the demand response scheduling process. In one example, a method includes receiving demand response (DR) request from a DR initiator, transmitting the DR request to an aggregator, for each customer, receiving customer location information and a customer DR value from the aggregator, aggregating DR at a distribution transformer in a distribution system, determining if there are any violations in the distribution system, determining an aggregated DR value for each electric node affected by the DR request, and transmitting each determined DR value to the DR initiator.

1. A method comprising: receiving a demand response (DR) request from a DR initiator, initiating the planning of a DR event, in an electric distribution grid having a plurality of electric nodes and a plurality of customers;transmitting the DR request to an aggregation service provider;for each customer, receiving customer location information and a customer DR value from the aggregation service provider;aggregating DR at a distribution transformer in a distribution system by determining topologically where each customer is located;determining if there are any violations in the distribution system;determining an aggregated DR value for each electric node affected by the DR request; andtransmitting each aggregated DR value to the DR initiator. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one electric node is a sub station. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the electric node is a feeder. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising: aggregating by mapping customer meters/service points with a model of the grid topology. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein determining a topological model of the distribution system comprises: receiving topological input data on the distribution system;verifying the input data; anddetermining a plurality of nodes on the distribution system and a plurality of branches on the distribution system, and determining connections between the plurality of nodes and the plurality of branches. 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising: determining a status of at least one switch on the distribution system. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising: determining at least one violation on the distribution system based on the aggregated DR value associated with a respective electric node affected by the DR request. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the at least one violation is related to cold load pickup. 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the at least one violation is related to asymmetric DR balancing between phases. 10. A system having a computer, including a memory containing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: receive a demand response (DR) request from a DR initiator, initiating the planning of a DR event, in an electric distribution grid having a plurality of electric nodes and a plurality of customers;transmit the DR request to an aggregation service provider;for each customer, receive customer location information and a customer DR value from the aggregation service provider;aggregate DR at a distribution transformer in a distribution system by determining topologically where each customer is located;determine if there are any violations in the distribution system;determine an aggregated DR value for each electric node affected by the DR request; andtransmit each aggregated DR value to the DR initiator. 11. The system of claim 10, wherein at least one electric node is a sub station. 12. The system of claim 10, wherein at least one electric node is a feeder. 13. The system of claim 10, further comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: aggregate by mapping customer meters/service points with a model of the grid topology. 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to determine a topological model of the distribution system further comprise instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: receive topological input data on the distribution system;verify the input data; anddetermine a plurality of nodes on the distribution system and a plurality of branches on the distribution system, and determining connections between the plurality of nodes and the plurality of branches. 15. The system of claim 10, further comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: determine a status of at least one switch on the distribution system. 16. The system of claim 10, further comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: determine at least one violation on the distribution system based on the aggregated DR value associated with a respective electric node affected by the DR request. 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one violation is related to cold load pickup. 18. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one violation is related to asymmetric DR balancing between phases. 19. A system comprising: means for receiving a demand response (DR) request from a DR initiator, initiating the planning of a DR event, in an electric distribution grid having a plurality of electric nodes and a plurality of customers;means for transmitting the DR request to an aggregation service provider;for each customer, means for receiving customer location information and a customer DR value from the aggregation service provider;means for aggregating DR at a distribution transformer in a distribution system by determining topologically where each customer is located;means for determining if there are any violations in the distribution system;means for determining an aggregated DR value for each electric node affected by the DR request; andmeans for transmitting each aggregated DR value to the DR initiator.
