A surgical device including a first jaw and a second jaw is presented. The surgical device also includes a biasing element that biases the distal end of the first jaw towards the distal end of the second jaw. The device also includes a first driver disposed in the second jaw and coupled to the first jaw. The first driver is configured to cause separation of the first jaw and the second jaw. The device further includes at least one of a cutting element and a stapling element disposed within the second jaw, preferably a blade rotatably mounted on a wedge. A second driver is configured to move the cutting element and/or the stapling element proximally from a distal end toward the proximal end of the second jaw to at least one of cut and staple a section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws.

1. A method for operating a surgical device, the surgical device including a first jaw having a distal end and a second jaw having a distal end, wherein the second jaw is disposed in opposed correspondence with the first jaw, and wherein the first jaw is pivotably coupled to the second jaw, the method comprising: opening the first jaw and the second jaw by a first driver disposed in the second jaw;positioning a section of tissue between the first jaw and the second jaw;biasing the distal end of the first jaw towards the distal end of the second jaw, via a biasing element;closing the first jaw and the second jaw so as to clamp the section of tissue between the first jaw and the second jaw;rotating a clamp shaft assembly via the first driver, wherein a first portion of the clamp shaft assembly extends into a gearbox and a second portion of the clamp shaft assembly defines a drive socket having a slot for receiving a drive clip engaging a first rotatable drive shaft; andlimiting a distance that a proximal end of the first jaw is separated from a proximal end of the second jaw via a stopping element, wherein, when the first and second jaws are closed, the first jaw is initially pivoted about the stopping element, subsequently the first jaw is pivoted about a point at which the distal end of the first jaw contacts the distal end of the second jaw, such that thereafter the distal end of the first jaw is biased apart from the distal end of the second jaw, via the biasing element. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the biasing element is a spring. 3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising separating the first jaw and the second jaw, via the first driver, and wherein closing the first jaw and the second jaw includes actuating the first driver in reverse so as to cause the first jaw and the second jaw to close. 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein, when the first driver is actuated for closing the jaws, the biasing element causes the distal end of the first jaw to contact the distal end of the second jaw prior to the first driver completing the closing of the jaws. 5. The method according to claim 3, wherein the opening and closing of the first and second jaws includes: providing an electro-mechanical driver having a motor arrangement;coupling the first rotatable drive shaft to the motor arrangement;coupling the first rotatable drive shaft to the first driver; anddriving the first driver. 6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising pivoting the first jaw relative to the second jaw around the stopping element. 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein pivoting the first jaw relative to the second jaw around a point other than the stopping element includes pivoting the first jaw relative to the second jaw around a section of tissue disposed between the first jaw and the second jaw. 8. The method according to claim 1, further comprising: providing a cutting element within the second jaw; andmoving the cutting element proximally from a distal end toward a proximal end of the second jaw to cut the section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws. 9. The method according to claim 1, further comprising: providing a stapling element disposed within the second jaw; andmoving the stapling element proximally from a distal end toward a proximal end of the second jaw to staple the section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws. 10. The method according to claim 1, further comprising: providing a cutting and stapling element disposed within the second jaw; andmoving the cutting and stapling element proximally from a distal end toward a proximal end of the second jaw to cut and staple the section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws. 11. The method according to claim 10, further comprising moving a blade of the cutting and stapling element from a first position to a second position when the cutting element moves proximally. 12. The method according to claim 10, further comprising rotating a blade of the cutting and stapling element from a first position, wherein a cutting edge of the blade is not exposed, to a second position, wherein the cutting edge of the blade is exposed, when the cutting and stapling element moves proximally. 13. The method according to claim 10, wherein the cutting and stapling of tissue includes: providing an electro-mechanical driver having a motor arrangement;coupling a second rotatable drive shaft to the motor arrangement;coupling the second rotatable drive shaft to the first driver; anddriving a second driver.
