An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a patient's body is disclosed. The insertion tool unifies needle insertion, guidewire advancement, and catheter insertion in a single device. In one embodiment, the insertion tool comprises a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed, a hollow needle distally extending from the housing with at least a portion of the catheter pre-disposed over the needle, and a guidewire pre-disposed within the needle. A guidewire advancement assembly is also included for selectively advancing the guidewire distally past a distal end of the needle in preparation for distal advancement of the catheter. In one embodiment a catheter advancement assembly is also included for selectively advancing the catheter into the patient. Each advancement assembly can include a slide or other actuator that enables a user to selectively advance the desired component. Guidewire and catheter advancement assemblies are also disclosed.
1. An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a body of a patient, comprising: a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed;an at least partially hollow needle distally extending from the housing, at least a portion of the catheter pre-disposed over the needle;a g
1. An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a body of a patient, comprising: a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed;an at least partially hollow needle distally extending from the housing, at least a portion of the catheter pre-disposed over the needle;a guidewire including a proximal end secured to a portion of the insertion tool, a distal end pre-disposed within the needle, and an intermediate portion substantially defining a U-shaped bend; andan advancement assembly designed to selectively advance the distal end of the guidewire out a distal opening of the needle without moving the secured proximal end of the guidewire in preparation for distal advancement of the catheter. 2. The insertion tool as defined in claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the guidewire is attached to an interior portion of the housing. 3. The insertion tool as defined in claim 1, wherein the guidewire is at least initially received within at least one track defined in the housing for constraining a position of the guidewire. 4. The insertion tool as defined in claim 1, wherein the advancement assembly includes a slidable guidewire lever that includes at least one guide surface for distally advancing the guidewire. 5. The insertion tool as defined in claim 4, wherein the at least one guide surface of the guidewire lever guides the U-shaped bend of the guidewire during distal advancement of the guidewire. 6. The insertion tool as defined in claim 4, wherein the guidewire lever is selectively movable by a slide slidably attached to the housing. 7. The insertion tool as defined in claim 6, wherein movement of the guidewire lever a first distance results in distal advancement of the guidewire a second distance, the second distance being greater relative the first distance. 8. The insertion tool as defined in claim 7, wherein the second distance is about twice the first distance. 9. The insertion tool as defined in claim 1, wherein the advancement assembly also selectively distally advances the catheter via user input. 10. The insertion tool as defined in claim 9, wherein distal movement of the advancement assembly causes distal advancement of the guidewire followed by distal advancement of the catheter. 11. The insertion tool as defined in claim 10, wherein the advancement assembly includes a guidewire lever for distally advancing the guidewire, the guidewire lever further including a tab that engages a safety housing included with the catheter so as to distally advance the catheter. 12. The insertion tool as defined in claim 1, wherein the needle is echogenic. 13. An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a body of a patient, comprising: a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed;an at least partially hollow needle distally extending from the housing, at least a portion of the catheter pre-disposed over the needle;a guidewire including a proximal end secured to a portion of the insertion tool, a distal end of the guidewire pre-disposed within the needle, and an intermediate portion substantially defining a U-shaped bend;an advancement assembly designed to selectively advance the distal end of the guidewire out a distal opening of the needle without moving the secured proximal end of the guidewire; anda needle safety component for shielding the distal end of the needle. 14. The insertion tool as defined in claim 13, wherein the needle safety component includes at least one binding element and at least one friction element that causes the at least one binding element to engage a portion of the needle and prevent relative movement therewith. 15. The insertion tool as defined in claim 14, wherein the at least one binding element is initially slidable along the needle and wherein the at least one friction element causes the at least one binding element to cant when the needle safety component is slid proximate the distal end of the needle. 16. The insertion tool as defined in claim 14, wherein the at least one binding element further includes a needle pass-through element through which the needle initially passes, and wherein the at least one binding element is allowed to cant once the needle no longer passes through the needle pass-through element. 17. The insertion tool as defined in claim 14, wherein the at least one friction element includes an elastomeric element that is disposed about a portion of both the needle and the at least one binding element. 18. The insertion tool as defined in claim 17, wherein the at least one friction element includes an O-ring. 19. The insertion tool as defined in claim 18, wherein the at least one binding element includes a front plate and a back plate, the O-ring wrapping about the back plate. 20. The insertion tool as defined in claim 13, wherein the needle safety component is disposed within a carriage, the carriage in turn disposed within a safety housing, the safety housing removably included with the catheter. 21. An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a body of a patient, comprising: a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed;an at least partially hollow needle distally extending from the housing, at least a portion of the catheter pre-disposed over the needle;a guidewire including a proximal end secured to a portion of the insertion tool and a distal end;an advancement assembly for selectively advancing the distal end of the guidewire out from the housing; anda needle safety component for shielding a distal end of the needle, the needle safety component including at least one binding element and at least one friction element that causes the at least one binding element to engage a portion of the needle and prevent relative movement therewith, the at least one friction element including an elastomeric element that is wrapped about at least a portion of the needle and the at least one binding element. 22. The insertion tool as defined in claim 21, wherein the elastomeric element includes an O-ring. 23. The insertion tool as defined in claim 22, wherein the at least one friction element includes a single O-ring. 24. The insertion tool as defined in claim 21, wherein the guidewire further includes an intermediate portion that substantially and initially defines a U-shape within the housing of the insertion tool. 25. The insertion tool as defined in claim 21, wherein the advancement assembly includes a slidable handle for selective advancement of the guidewire and wherein the advancement assembly advances the guidewire distally from the housing at a rate greater than a rate of sliding movement of the handle. 26.
