A fuel authorization system enables data to be exchanged between vehicles and a fuel vendor, to verify that the vehicle is authorized to receive fuel. Each fuel island is equipped with a camera and a short range radio (RF) component. Participating vehicles are equipped with fuel authorization component including an IR transmitter and a RF component that can establish a data link with the fuel island's RF unit. When the camera senses a vehicle in the fuel lane, an RF query is sent to the vehicle. Participating vehicles respond with an IR transmission. An RF data link is then established between the enrolled vehicle and the fuel vendor to verify that the vehicle is authorized to receive fuel. Once the verification is complete, the fuel dispenser is enabled. In some embodiments, the IR data link is not required, as the camera can distinguish between multiple fuel lanes.

1. A method for administering a fuel authorization program for a fuel vendor operating a plurality of fueling lanes, the fuel authorization program between a vehicle equipped with a vehicle Radiofrequency (RF) transmitter, a vehicle RF receiver, a vehicle directional Infrared (IR) transmitter directed outwardly from the vehicle's windshield, and at least one or more of a vehicle microcontroller a vehicle processor executing instructions stored on a memory, or a vehicle application-specific integrated circuit logically connected to said vehicle RF transmitter, vehicle RF receiver, and vehicle directional IR transmitter; and a fuel vendor having a video camera that is mounted in front of and above the plurality of fueling lanes, a station RF transmitter, a station IR receiver located proximate to a specific fuel pump in a specific fueling lane of the plurality of fueling lanes, and a station processor connected to said video camera, station RF transmitter, and station IR receiver, the method comprising the steps of: (a) automatically capturing video imagery of the plurality of fueling lanes using the video camera and detecting, by the station processor, presence of a vehicle by processing the captured imagery;(b) in response to detecting the presence of the vehicle, automatically transmitting an RF query from the station RF transmitter to the vehicle RF receiver, thereby establishing an RF data link therebetween;(c) in response to receiving the RF query at the vehicle RF receiver, automatically sending a directional, short range IR transmission from the vehicle directional IR transmitter thereby establishing an IR data link between the vehicle directional IR transmitter and the station IR receiver, thereby unambiguously identifying the specific fueling lane in which the vehicle is present and the specific fuel pump to which the vehicle is proximate;(d) in response to receiving the RF query at the vehicle RF receiver, automatically conveying fuel authorization credentials from the vehicle to the station processor over at least one of the RF data link or IR data link to verify that the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program; and(e) in response to receiving the fuel authorization credentials automatically determining, by the station processor, if the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program and is authorized to receive fuel, and;(f) in response to determining that the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program and is authorized to receive fuel, automatically enabling, by the station processor, fuel delivery at the specific fuel pump in the specific fueling lane(g) detecting, by the station processor by processing the captured imagery, that more than a predefined amount of vehicle movement relative to the specific fuel pump has occurred(f) in response to detecting that more than a predefined amount of vehicle movement relative to the specific fuel pump has occurred, disabling fuel delivery at the specific fuel pump. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the station IR receiver located proximate to the specific fuel pump in the specific fueling lane is a video camera. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of mounting the video camera upon a pole over at least one fuel lane. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of dynamically retrieving the fuel authorization credentials from a vehicle data bus or a non-removable, non-transitory vehicle memory in response to receiving the RF query by the vehicle RF receiver. 5. A authorization system to be installed proximate to a specific fuel pump in a specific fueling lane of a fuel vendor to enable the fuel lane to participate in a fuel authorization program, wherein the authorization program is based on exchanging data between a vehicle and the fuel vendor via both infrared (IR) and radiofrequency (RF) communication, the vehicle having a vehicle RF transmitter, a vehicle RF receiver, a vehicle directional Infrared (IR) transmitter directed outwardly from the vehicle's windshield, and at least one or more of a vehicle microcontroller, a vehicle processor executing instructions stored on a memory, or a vehicle application-specific integrated circuit logically connected to said vehicle RF transmitter, vehicle RF receiver, and vehicle directional IR transmitter, the authorization system comprising: (a) a housing;(b) a video camera disposed in the housing, positioned above and in front of the fuel lane, and oriented so as to capture imagery of the front windshield of the vehicle in the specific fueling lane and proximate to the specific fuel pump;(c) a station RF transmitter for establishing an RF data link with the vehicle RF receiver disposed in the lane; and(d) a station processor, logically coupled to said video camera, said station RF transmitter and a station memory, the station memory storing instructions which, when executed by the station processor, cause the station processor to perform the following functions: (i) capture video imagery of the specific fueling lane using the video camera and detect presence of a vehicle by processing the captured imagery;(ii) in response to detecting the presence of the vehicle, automatically transmit an RF query from the station RF transmitter to the vehicle RF receiver, thereby establishing an RF data link;(iii) capture and process video imagery of a directional, short range IR transmission from the vehicle directional IR transmitter thereby establishing an IR data link, thereby unambiguously identifying the specific fueling lane in which the vehicle is present and the specific fuel pump to which the vehicle is proximate;(iv) receive fuel authorization credentials transmitted from the vehicle over at least one of the RF data link or the IR data link to verify that the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program;(v) determine that the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program and is authorized to receive fuel using the received fuel authorization credentials;(vi) in response to determining that the vehicle is enrolled in the fuel authorization program and is authorized to receive fuel, convey a request to enable fuel delivery at the specific fuel pump in the specific fueling lane;(vii) detect, by processing the captured imagery, that more than a predefined amount of vehicle movement relative to the specific fuel pump has occurred; and(viii) in response to detecting that more than a predefined amount of vehicle movement relative to the specific fuel pump has occurred, convey a request to disable fuel delivery at the specific fuel pump. 6. The authorization system of claim 5, further comprising a station IR receiver located proximate to the specific fuel pump in the specific fueling lane and configured to receive an IR transmission from the vehicle directional IR transmitterand wherein the station processor uses the IR receiver to establishing an IR data link with the vehicle directional IR transmitter, thereby unambiguously identifying the specific fueling lane in which the vehicle is present and the specific fuel pump to which the vehicle is proximate in order to determine which fuel pump to enable. 7. The authorization system of claim 6, wherein the video camera has a field of view that covers a plurality of fueling lanes, and the station processor implements the function of automatically capturing and analyzing video imagery provided by the video camera to detect the presence of vehicles in the plurality of fueling lanes.
