The airfoil-shaped device of claim 9, further including a second portion arranged along an edge of the first portion distal from the surface of the device. 11. The airfoil-shaped device of claim 10, wherein the second portion extends outward from the first portion in a direction substantially perpendicular to the planar surface of the first portion. 12. The airfoil-shaped device of claim 9, wherein the deployable air deflector is configured to be positioned at various positions between the first position within the device and the second position, the second position being a fully deployed position of the air deflector. 13. The airfoil-shaped device of claim 9, wherein the apertures include apertures having at least two different shapes. 14. The airfoil-shaped device of claim 9, wherein the apertures include apertures having a uniform shape. 15. A wind turbine, comprising: a rotor having an airfoil-shaped blade, the airfoil-shaped blade including an air deflector, the air deflector being movable between a first position in which the air deflector is recessed within the airfoil-shaped blade to a second position in which the air deflector extends outwardly from an exterior surface of the airfoil-shaped blade, the air deflector further including a plurality of apertures extending entirely through the air deflector; anda load compensating device configured to extend the air deflector from the first position to the second position. 17. The wind turbine of claim 16, wherein the plurality of apertures include apertures of different sizes. 18.
