An electronic device system, comprising: a portable computing device comprising a smartphone, the portable computing device having a front face and a back face, a touch display on the front face, and a first camera on the front face, and a second camera on the back face; anda case configured to detachably physically couple to the portable computing device, the case including a back panel to substantially cover the back face of the portable computing device and a rim portion to extend along sides of the portable computing device, the case further comprising one or more light sources at the rim portion and configured to illuminate an area to be imaged by the first camera on the front face, and wherein the back panel comprises an opening aligned with the second camera. 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the one or more light sources comprise a plurality of light sources. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the plurality of light sources include two light sources on opposite sides of the touch display. 9. The system of claim 7, wherein the plurality of light sources are spaced around the touch display. 10. The system of claim 7, wherein the plurality of light sources are configured to emit light of the same color. 11. The system of claim 7, wherein the plurality of light sources are configured to emit light of different colors. 12. The system of claim 6, wherein the one or more light sources are configured to emit white light. 13. The system of claim 6, wherein the one or more light sources comprise one or more LEDs. 14. The system of claim 6, wherein the case is a single-piece case. 15. The system of claim 6, comprising a switch to control power to the one or more light sources independent of software on the portable computing device. 16. The system of claim 6, wherein the one or more light sources comprise a first plurality of light sources and a second plurality of light sources, the first and second pluralities of light sources positioned along a opposite long edges of the portable computing device. 17. The system of claim 6, wherein the case comprises a battery, and wherein the one or more light sources are configured to draw power from the battery. 18. The system of claim 17, wherein the battery is secured to the back panel of the case. 19. The system of claim 17, wherein the case is configured to electronically couple to the portable computing device. 20. The system of claim 19, wherein the case comprises a connector that mates to a power and data port of the portable computing device. 21. The system of claim 20, wherein the connector is configured such that the battery in the case provides power to the portable computing device. 22. The system of claim 20, wherein the case comprises an electronic interface for coupling the portable computing device to an external power source or communications link. 23. The system of claim 22, wherein the electronic interface is positioned on a side wall of the case. 24. The system of claim 6, wherein the case comprises a first portion that fits over a top edge of the portable computing device and a second portion that fits over a bottom edge of the portable computing device, the first portion and the second portion being separately slidably engaged to the portable computing device and mated to each other to define the case. 25. The system of claim 19, wherein the portable computing device is configured to generate a user interface on the touch display and control an intensity of light emitted by the one or more light sources in response to user input to the user interface. 26. The system of claim 19, wherein the portable computing device is configured to generate a user interface on the touch display and control a color of light emitted by the one or more light sources in response to user input to the user interface. 27. The system of claim 19, wherein the portable computing device comprises a battery to power the touch display and the camera, and wherein the one or more light sources are configured to draw power from the battery. 28. The system of claim 27, comprising one or more photovoltaic cells for providing energy to the battery. 29. An article for attachment to an electronic device, comprising: a case configured to detachably physically couple to a smartphone, the case including a back panel to substantially cover a back face of the smartphone, the case including a rim portion to extend along sides of the smartphone, the case further including one or more light sources mounted on the rim portion and configured to illuminate an area to be imaged by a camera on a front face of the smartphone, and wherein the back panel comprises an opening aligned with a second camera on the back face of the smartphone. 30. A case configured to be removably attached to a smartphone, comprising: a back panel that substantially covers a back face of the smartphone when the case is attached to the smartphone, the case defining a first opening configured and arranged so that when the case is attached to the smartphone, at least part of a display of the smartphone is visible by way of the first opening, and the case further comprising one or more light sources positioned along a side edge of the first opening, and the one or more light sources operable to illuminate part of an area to be imaged by a front-facing camera of the smartphone, and wherein the back panel comprises a second opening that is aligned with a rear-facing camera of the smartphone when the case is attached to the smartphone. 31. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein one or more of the light sources comprises a light generating device. 32. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein one or more of the light sources are light emitting diodes (LED). 33. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein one or more of the light sources is at least partly embedded in the case. 34. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the opening of the case further comprises another side edge and a top edge and a bottom edge, and the one or more light sources are arranged so that with respect to one edge of the opening, no light sources are located along that one edge of the opening. 35. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the opening of the case further comprises another side edge and a top edge and a bottom edge, and the one or more light sources are arranged so that no light sources are located along the bottom edge of the opening. 36. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the case comprises a polymeric material. 37. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the opening of the case further comprises another side edge located opposite the side edge, and the one or more light sources are evenly distributed along the side edge and along the another side edge. 38. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein a portion of the case that is configured to receive the smartphone has a single-piece construction. 39. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein a portion of the case that is configured to receive the smartphone has a multi-part construction. 40. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein one or more of the light sources is positioned in an impression in the case. 41. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein all of the one or more light sources have the same illuminance. 42. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the one or more light sources are laterally positioned between the side edge of the first opening and an outermost edge of the case. 43. The case as recited in claim 30, wherein the one or more light sources are evenly spaced along the side edge.
