Apparatus and methods for creating multi-layered lightly-laminated provide films with increased or maintained strength. An increased level of strength is achieved by bonding adjacent layers of the multi-layer film together in a manner that the bond strength of the laminated layers is less than a strength of a weakest tear resistance of the individual first and second film layers. The inventors have surprisingly found that such a configuration of light bonding provides increased and unexpected strength properties to the multi-layer film as compared to a monolayer film of equal thickness or a multi-layer film in which the plurality of layers are tightly bonded together.

1. A method for forming a multi-layered lightly-laminated film, the method comprising: a) providing a first film layer of thermoplastic material,b) providing a second film layer of thermoplastic material, andc) bonding the first film layer to the second film layer, comprising: i. a plurality of discrete non-adhesive bonded regions in which the first and second film layers are cold bonded directly together; andii. a plurality of unbonded regions alternating with the plurality of bonded regions, the unbonded regions including discrete areas in which the first and second film layers are not bonded to one another;wherein a bond strength of the bonded regions is less than a weakest tear resistance of either the first or second film layers; andwherein a machine direction of the first film layer is parallel to a machine direction of the second film layer. 2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein bonding the first film layer to the second film layer comprises passing at least a section of the first and second film layers through one or more TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 3. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising passing the at least a section of the first and second film layers through a different one of TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 4. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein at least one of the first or second film layers is individually passed through one or more transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers prior to bonding the first and second film layers together. 5. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein a ratio of depth of engagement to pitch provided by the transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELFing rollers, or embossing rollers is between about 0.5:1 and about 1.2:1. 6. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising varying one or more of a pattern, size, or number of the bond regions to control the bond strength of the bond regions. 7. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising forming the multi-layered lightly-laminated film into a bag. 8. A method for forming a multi-layered lightly-laminated film, the method comprising: a) providing a first film layer of thermoplastic material,b) providing a second film layer of thermoplastic material, andc) bonding the first film layer to the second film layer, comprising: i) a plurality of discrete cold-formed non-adhesive bonds directly securing the first film layer of thermoplastic material to the second film layer of thermoplastic material;wherein the bonds provide less resistive force to an applied strain than molecular-level deformation of either the first layer or the second layer;wherein a machine direction of the first film layer of thermoplastic material is parallel to a machine direction of the second film layer of thermoplastic material. 9. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein bonding the first film layer to the second film layer comprises passing at least a section of the first and second film layers through one or more TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 10. The method as recited in claim 9, further comprising passing the at least a section of the first and second film layers through a different one of TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 11. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein at least one of the first or second film layers is individually passed through one or more transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers prior to bonding the first and second film layers together. 12. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein a ratio of depth of engagement to pitch provided by the transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELFing rollers, or embossing rollers is between about 0.5:1 and about 1.2:1. 13. The method as recited in claim 9, further comprising forming the multi-layered lightly-laminated film into a bag. 14. A method for forming a multi-layered lightly-laminated film, the method comprising: a) providing a first film layer of thermoplastic material,b) providing a second film layer of thermoplastic material, andbonding the first film layer to the second film layer, comprising: i) a plurality of discrete cold-formed non-adhesive bonds directly securing the first film layer of thermoplastic material to the second film layer of thermoplastic material;wherein the bonds have a bond strength less than a force required to fail either the first film layer or the second film layer;wherein a machine direction of the first film layer of thermoplastic material is parallel to a machine direction of the second film layer of thermoplastic material. 15. The method as recited in claim 14, wherein bonding the first film layer to the second film layer comprises passing at least a section of the first and second film layers through one or more TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 16. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising passing the at least a section of the first and second film layers through a different one of TD ring rollers, MD ring rollers, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers. 17. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein at least one of the first or second film layers is individually passed through one or more transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELF'ing rollers, or embossing rollers prior to bonding the first and second film layers together. 18. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein a ratio of depth of engagement to pitch provided by the transverse-direction ring rolls, machine-direction ring rolls, SELFing rollers, or embossing rollers is between about 0.5:1 and about 1.2:1. 19. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising forming the multi-layered lightly-laminated film into a bag.
