Methods and devices are provided for anchoring suture to tissue, incorporating anchoring devices constructed substantially from suture. The anchoring devices are constructed as longitudinally extended, preformed knot configurations that upon deployment are reconfigured to form anchoring knots having an increased cross-section relative to the preformed knot configuration, for secure lodging in tissue. The anchoring devices are suitable for single and multi-anchor surgical procedures in soft tissue or bone, and multiple anchors can be delivered using a single delivery device.

1. An anchoring device configured to be anchored in human tissue, the anchoring device comprising: a suture length having a first portion and a second portion; anda first preformed knot configuration disposed along the first portion of the suture length and a second preformed knot configuration disposed along the second portion of the suture length, each of the first and second preformed knot configurations defining: a respective first length substantially along a longitudinal direction;a respective first maximum transverse dimension along a first transverse direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction; anda respective second maximum transverse dimension along a second transverse direction that is perpendicular to the each of the longitudinal direction and the first transverse direction, wherein the first and second preformed knot configurations are collapsible along the longitudinal direction into respective first and second anchoring knots each having: a respective second length substantially along the longitudinal direction, wherein the respective second length is shorter than the respective first length;a respective third maximum transverse dimension along the first transverse direction, wherein the respective third maximum transverse dimension is greater than the respective first maximum transverse dimension; anda respective fourth maximum transverse dimension along the second transverse direction, wherein the respective fourth maximum transverse dimension is greater than the respective second maximum transverse dimension. 2. An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the preformed knot configurations and the suture length are formed from a single line of suture. 3. An anchoring device according to claim 2, wherein a first portion of the line of suture that forms the at least one of the preformed knot configurations has the same structure and material as a second portion of the line of suture that extends between the preformed knot configurations. 4. An anchoring device according to claim 2, wherein a first portion of the line of suture that forms the at least one of the preformed knot configurations differs in at least one of structure and material from a second portion of the line of suture that extends between the preformed knot configurations. 5. An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein each of the preformed knot configurations comprises a respective separate piece of suture that is intertwined with a portion of the suture length. 6. An anchoring device according to claim 5, further comprising a sliding knot disposed along the suture length, and wherein at least a portion of the suture length is a loop closed with the sliding knot. 7. An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the third maximum transverse dimension of the first anchoring knot is at least three times larger than the first maximum transverse dimension of the first preformed knot configuration. 8. An anchoring device according to claim 7, wherein the fourth maximum transverse dimension of the second anchoring knot is at least three times larger than the second maximum transverse dimension of the second preformed knot configuration. 9. An anchoring device of claim 1, wherein the suture length disposed between adjacent ones of the preformed knot configurations is configured to be shortened. 10. An anchoring device of claim 1, wherein each one of the preformed knot configurations includes a plurality of openings, and the suture length extends through one or more of the plurality of openings. 11. An anchoring device of claim 10, wherein the suture length extends through each one of the plurality of openings. 12. An anchoring device of claim 11, wherein at least one of the first and second preformed knot configurations is a crocheted structure. 13. An anchoring device of claim 10, wherein at least one of the preformed knot configurations is slidable along the suture length. 14. An anchoring device of claim 10, wherein at least one of the preformed knot configurations is fixed to the suture length. 15. An anchoring device of claim 10, wherein the first preformed knot configuration has a proximal end and an opposed distal end, wherein another portion of the suture length is woven through the at least one opening of the plurality of openings so as to extend from the proximal end of the first preformed knot configuration toward the second preformed knot configuration. 16. An anchoring device of claim 15, wherein at least one of the first and second preformed knot configurations is a twisted braid. 17. An anchoring device of claim 15, wherein the second preformed knot configuration has a proximal end and an opposed distal end, wherein the anchoring device further comprises a sliding knot disposed proximate the distal end of the second preformed knot configuration, the sliding knot configured to shorten the suture length between the first preformed knot configuration and the second preformed knot configuration. 18. An assembly for repairing tissue, the assembly comprising: a length of suture, a preformed knot configuration formed along a portion of the length, the preformed knot configuration having a proximal end, a distal end, a head length that extends from the proximal end to the distal end substantially along a longitudinal direction, and first and second maximum head transverse dimensions respectively along first and second directions that are perpendicular to each other and are each transverse to the longitudinal direction, the preformed knot configuration being collapsible along the longitudinal direction to an anchoring knot having 1) a knot length along the longitudinal direction that is less than the head length, and 2) first and second maximum knot transverse dimensions respectively along the first and second directions, wherein the first maximum knot transverse dimension is greater than the first maximum head transverse dimension, and the second maximum knot transverse dimension is greater than the second maximum head transverse dimension;a delivery needle having a proximal end, a distal end spaced from the proximal end of the delivery needle in a distal direction, and a cannulation that extends along the distal direction, the preformed knot configuration being slidably disposed within the cannulation; anda piston slidably disposed within the cannulation proximal of the preformed knot configuration, the piston being adapted to push the preformed knot configuration in the distal direction out of the cannulation. 19. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the first maximum knot transverse dimension is at least three times greater than the first maximum head transverse dimension.
