A surgical instrument including a power assist device, and its method of use for deploying surgical fasteners, is disclosed. The surgical instrument may include a handle, an elongated shaft extending from the handle, and a surgical fastener deployment system including a driveshaft. The driveshaft is actuatable between at least a first proximal position and a second distal position. A striker is movable relative to the driveshaft and an impact surface is associated with the driveshaft. The impact surface is constructed and arranged to be struck by the striker member to displace the driveshaft to the second distal position and deploy the surgical fastener.

1. A method for deploying a surgical fastener, the method comprising: displacing a driveshaft of a surgical instrument from a first position towards a second position operatively associated with deploying the surgical fastener; andapplying an impulse to the driveshaft as it is displaced to accelerate movement of the driveshaft to the second position, wherein the applying step includes striking an impact surface associated with the driveshaft with a striker to apply the impulse to the driveshaft. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing energy as the driveshaft is displaced from the first position towards the second position. 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising releasing the stored energy to accelerate the striker. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising locking the striker in place as the driveshaft is displaced from the first position towards the second position. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising releasing the striker when the driveshaft is located at a preselected position between the first position and the second position. 6. The method of claim 3, further comprising releasing the stored energy when the driveshaft is located at a preselected position between the first position and the second position. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising accelerating the driveshaft from a first speed to a second speed when the impact surface is struck by the striker. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising rotating the striker relative to at least a portion of a handle of the surgical instrument. 9. A method for deploying a surgical fastener, the method comprising: striking an impact surface associated with a driveshaft of a surgical instrument with a moving mass as the driveshaft is displaced from a first proximal position towards a second distal position; andtransferring momentum from the mass to the driveshaft to deploy the surgical fastener. 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising displacing the driveshaft from the first proximal position towards the second distal position, wherein the mass strikes the impact surface when the driveshaft is located at a preselected position between the first proximal position the second distal position. 11. The method of claim 9, further comprising substantially preventing backwards acceleration of the driveshaft during acceleration of the moving mass. 12. The method of claim 9, further comprising storing energy as the driveshaft is displaced from the first proximal position towards the second distal position. 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising releasing the stored energy to accelerate the mass. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising releasing the stored energy when the driveshaft is located at a preselected position between the first proximal position and the second distal position. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the mass is initially locked in place, and further comprising releasing the mass when the driveshaft is located at the preselected position between the first proximal position and the second distal position. 16. The method of claim 9, wherein the mass is a striker. 17. The method of claim 9, further comprising accelerating the driveshaft from a first speed to a second speed when the impact surface is struck by the moving mass. 18. The method of claim 9, further comprising rotating the moving mass relative to at least a portion of a handle of the surgical instrument. 19. A method for deploying a surgical fastener, the method comprising: displacing a driveshaft of a surgical instrument from a first proximal position towards a second distal position;storing energy as the driveshaft is moved from the first proximal position toward the second distal position;releasing the stored energy to accelerate a striker. 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising striking an impact surface associated with the driveshaft with the striker to apply an impulse to the driveshaft. 21. The method of claim 19, further comprising releasing the stored energy when the driveshaft is located at a preselected position between the first proximal position and the second distal position. 22. The method of claim 21, further comprising locking the striker in place as the driveshaft is displaced from the first proximal position towards the second distal position. 23. The method of claim 22, further comprising releasing the striker at the preselected position between the first proximal position and the second distal position. 24. The method of claim 19, further comprising accelerating the driveshaft from a first speed to a second speed when an impact surface is struck by the striker. 25. The method of claim 19, further comprising rotating the striker relative to at least a portion of a handle of the surgical instrument.
