The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the stepping surface has an upward slope from horizontal in the retracted position. 3. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the retractable vehicle step is self-energizing in at least one of the retracted position and the extended position. 4. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the at least two of the plurality of support linkages have different dimensions. 5. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, further comprising a motor configured to move the stepping platform between the retracted position and the extended position. 6. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the stepping platform extends downwards and outboard in the extended position. 7. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein a first line drawn between the first axis and the third axis and a second line drawn between the second axis and the fourth axis intersects downwards of the plurality of support linkages in the extended position. 8. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of mounting brackets and at least two sets of the plurality of support linkages. 9. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the third axis and fourth axis are located above the stepping surface when the stepping platform is in the extended position. 10. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, further comprising a shaft which extends through the first end of the first arm and into each of the pair of spaced apart flanges of the stepping platform linkage. 11. A vehicle comprising: a retractable vehicle step comprising: a stepping platform defining a stepping surface;a mounting bracket attached to a lower portion of the vehicle;a plurality of support linkages, the plurality of support linkages pivotable with respect to the mounting bracket and configured to pivotably move the stepping platform between a retracted position and an extended position, wherein at least two of the plurality of support linkages are non-parallel;a stepping platform linkage connected to the stepping platform and the at least two of the plurality of support linkages, the stepping platform linkage having a straddling segment located on a first end opposite the stepping platform, wherein a portion of the straddling segment forms a first surface and a second surface defining an opening having a width greater than a width of each of the at least two of the plurality of support linkages, the portion of the straddling segment forming the first surface and the second surface comprising a unitary member;wherein the stepping platform has a width greater than the width of any of the plurality of support linkages and the stepping platform linkage;wherein the retractable vehicle step has at least 4 axes of rotation, a first axis and a second axis of which are located on the mounting bracket and a third axis and a fourth axis of which are located on the stepping platform linkage within the straddling segment;the at least two of the plurality of support linkages comprising a first arm and a second arm, the first arm defining an inboard face and an outboard face, a maximum distance between the inboard face and the outboard face defining a first thickness, the first arm defining a first side and a second side, a maximum distance between the first side and the second side defining a first width, the first width being substantially greater than the first thickness, the first arm extending substantially from the first surface to the second surface, the portion of the straddling segment forming the first surface and the second surface supporting the first arm;wherein the stepping platform is configured to move downwards and outboard when moving from the retracted position to the extended position; andthe retractable vehicle step further comprising a motor operably connected to at least one of the plurality of support linkages to move the stepping platform from the retracted position to the extended position and wherein the second arm is supported by and pivotable with respect to the mounting bracket and extends downward and forward from the mounting bracket when the stepping platform is in the extended position and wherein further placement of a load upon the stepping surface when the stepping platform is in the extended position urges the stepping platform away from the retracted position. 12.
