An apparatus for handling cards has a dispensing end. The dispensing end has a base plate for supporting cards being manually removed. An upper plate with a U-shaped opening is spaced above the base plate and defines a slot for cards to pass. First and second spaced apart card guides define side edges of the slot. The first card guide is shorter than the second card guide, creating an offset in a first direction of travel of cards being removed. A method of removing cards is also disclosed, enabling movement of cards in at least two directions due to the presence of a card guide offset.

1. A method of delivering a playing card from a playing card-handling device, the method comprising: moving a playing card from an interior of the playing card-handling device to a playing card delivery area of the playing card-handling device, the playing card delivery area defined by an upper plate with a U-shaped opening, a base plate, a first card guide, and a second card guide spaced apart from the first card guide, the first card guide and the second card guide defining an output slot through which playing cards can be slidably removed, the first card guide including a curved inner edge at a terminal end of the first card guide, the second card guide extending further in a direction of travel of cards than the first card guide;moving a leading edge of the playing card within the output slot in the direction of travel until a trailing edge of the playing card clears the terminal end of the first card guide; androtating the playing card about an axis normal to a face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area while a portion of the playing card remains in the playing card delivery area. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the axis by between about five degrees (5°) and about forty degrees (40°). 3. The method of claim 2, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the axis by between about five degrees (5°) and about forty degrees (40°) when at least 20% of the playing card is retained in the output slot. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the axis by between about fifteen degrees (15°) and about thirty-five degrees (35°). 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising preventing more than one card at a time from passing through the playing card delivery area with a card limiter plate. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein moving the playing card from the interior of the playing card-handling device to the playing card delivery area of the playing card-handling device further comprises monitoring delivery of the playing card. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein monitoring delivery of the playing card comprises reading at least one of card rank or card suit of the playing card with at least one sensor located within the base plate of the playing card delivery area of the playing card-handling device. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein reading the at least one of card rank or card suit of the playing card with the at least one sensor comprises reading the playing card with a contact image sensor located proximate the second card guide prior to rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein reading the playing card with the contact image sensor further comprises pressing the playing card toward the contact image sensor with a card limiter plate positioned over the base plate. 10. The method of claim 6, wherein monitoring delivery of the playing card comprises displaying information on a display of a control panel located on the playing card-handling device. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein displaying the information on the display of the control panel comprises displaying information pertaining to at least one of hand composition, game outcome, jam detection, cut card presence, or presence of an unauthorized card. 12. A method of delivering a playing card from a playing card-dealing shoe, the method comprising: moving a playing card from an interior of the playing card-dealing shoe to a playing card delivery area of the playing card-dealing shoe, the playing card delivery area defined by an upper plate, a base plate, a first card guide, and a second card guide, the first card guide and the second card guide defining an output slot through which playing cards can be slidably removed, the first card guide including a curved inner edge at a terminal end of the first card guide, the second card guide extending further in a direction of travel of cards than the first card guide;moving a leading edge of the playing card within the output slot in the direction of travel until a trailing edge of the playing card clears the terminal end of the first card guide; androtating the playing card about an axis normal to a face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area while a portion of the playing card remains in the playing card delivery area. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about a geometric center of the playing card by an angle measured from an axis along the direction of travel. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the geometric center of the playing card by an angle of between about five degrees (5°) and about forty degrees (40°). 15. The method of claim 13, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the geometric center of the playing card by an angle of between about five degrees (5°) and about forty degrees (40°) when at least 20% of the playing card is retained in the output slot. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein rotating the playing card about the axis normal to the face of the playing card to remove the playing card from the playing card delivery area comprises rotating the playing card about the geometric center of the playing card by an angle of between about fifteen degrees (15°) and about thirty-five degrees (35°). 17. The method of claim 12, further comprising preventing more than one playing card at a time from passing between the first card guide and the second card guide using a card feed limiter having a U-shaped opening. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein preventing more than one playing card at a time from passing between the first card guide and the second card guide using the card feed limiter having the U-shaped opening comprises protecting the card feed limiter with the upper plate being configured as a protective cover positioned vertically over the card feed limiter, the protective cover having a corresponding U-shaped opening. 19. The method of claim 18, wherein protecting the card feed limiter with the protective cover comprises each of the card feed limiter and the protective cover including an elongated side proximate the second card guide, the elongated side of each of the card feed limiter and the protective cover extending further in the direction of travel of cards than another side of each of the card feed limiter and the protective cover proximate the first card guide. 20. The method of claim 18, wherein protecting the card feed limiter with the protective cover comprises concealing at least a portion of the playing card prior to moving the playing card from the interior of the playing card-dealing shoe to the playing card delivery area of the playing card-dealing shoe with a shielding device located within the U-shaped opening of the card feed limiter or the protective cover.
