The welding system of claim 1, wherein the first threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 150 amps, and the second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 300 amps. 3. The welding system of claim 1, further comprising a first power converter coupled to at least one of the engine and the energy storage device to convert at least one of the storage device power output and the engine power output to the welding power output. 4. The welding system of claim 3, further comprising a second power converter coupled to the energy storage device to convert the storage device power output to welding power output, and wherein the first power converter is coupled to the engine to convert the engine power output to at least one of the weld power output and an auxiliary power output. 5. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to command conversion of only storage device power output to produce the welding power output when the welding system is powered on and to allow a delay period to elapse before accessing engine power output from the engine. 6. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to access engine power output from the engine when a pause in the welding process is detected. 7. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the charger is configured to charge the energy storage device when the welding power output is between a first threshold and a second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds. 8. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the engine to prevent the generation of the engine power output during non-welding periods. 9. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the engine is further configured to provide engine power output for an auxiliary power output when an auxiliary load is detected. 10. A welding system, comprising: an engine configured to drive a generator to produce engine power output, wherein the engine is rated below approximately 25 horsepower;an energy storage device configured to provide storage device power output;a charger coupled to the energy storage device and to the engine and configured to receive the engine power output from the engine and to charge the energy storage device with the received engine power output; anda controller configured to: control access to storage device power output from the energy storage device, tocontrol engine power output from the engine and production of welding power output;control auxiliary power output by conversion of the storage device output and engine power output based upon a plurality of stepwise thresholds of commanded welding powercommand welding power output and auxiliary power output to be produced from one of the storage device power output alone, or the engine power output alone in response to a first and a second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds; andcommand welding power output to be produced from both the both storage device power output and engine power output in response to a third threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds. 11. The welding system of claim 10, wherein the energy storage device is further configured to discharge to produce auxiliary power output. 12. The welding system of claim 11, wherein the first threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 150 amps, and the second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 300 amps. 13. A welding system, comprising: an engine configured to drive a generator to produce engine power output, wherein the engine is rated below approximately 25 horsepower;an energy storage device configured to provide storage device power output;a charger coupled to the energy storage device and to the engine and configured to receive the engine power output from the engine and to charge the energy storage device with the received engine power output;a controller configured to: activate and deactivate the engine to access engine power output and to charge the energy storage device;control access to storage device power output from the energy storage device and engine power output from the engine;control production of welding power output and auxiliary power output by conversion of the storage device output and engine power output based upon a plurality of stepwise thresholds of commanded welding power;command welding power output and auxiliary power output to be produced from one of the storage device power output alone, or the engine power output alone in response to a first and a second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds; andcommand welding power output to be produced from both the storage device power output and the engine power output in response to a third threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds. 14. The welding system of claim 13, wherein the first threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 150 amps, and the second threshold of the plurality of stepwise thresholds is equal to approximately 300 amps. 15. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the first threshold is greater than the second threshold. 16. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the second threshold is greater than the first threshold.
