The method of claim 1, where increasing the actual total number of active cylinders in response to output of the engine vibration sensor is based on output of the engine vibration sensor during an engine crankshaft interval outside of an engine knock window. 3. The method of claim 2, where increasing the actual total number of active cylinders in response to output of the engine vibration sensor includes opening an intake valve of a cylinder that has been held closed over an engine cycle. 4. The method of claim 3, where increasing the actual total number of active cylinders in response to output of the engine vibration sensor includes continuing to open and close an exhaust valve of the cylinder that had opened and closed during the engine cycle. 5. The method of claim 1, where air flow through an engine cylinder ceases during operating the engine including the actual total number of active cylinders based on the plurality of engine fuel consumption values. 6. The method of claim 1, where air flow through a deactivated cylinder continues during operating the engine including the actual total number of active cylinders based on the plurality of engine fuel consumption values. 7. The method of claim 1, where operating the engine including the actual total number of active cylinders based on the plurality of engine fuel consumption values includes mechanically deactivating a valve operator. 8. The method of claim 7, where the plurality of engine fuel consumption values includes a minimum engine fuel consumption value, and where operating the engine including the actual total number of active cylinders based on the plurality of engine fuel consumption values provides the minimum engine fuel consumption value.
